'Crickets Sing...' was actually #15 in June 2004 but good shout! Loved Emma's 'Free Me' album, foresaw the whole 60's revival that came about in 2007/8 and yet did it on half the budget! Truly great pop album, I loved 'I'll Be There' from that album as well which I suppose also qualifies for this very thread (#7 in January 2004):

I loved the Westlife and Shontelle songs posted above. The latter was apparently going to be Cher Lloyd's first single had she won 'The X Factor'?

Glad she didn't win X-Factor...thing is how long does it take to write an original song?

It was supposed to be her winner's single?

They all had different covers for their winner's single, Matt's was obviously When We Collide/Many Of Horror, Rebecca's was Distant Dreamer by Duffy as we saw her perform, Mary's was Unrbeakable by Westlife (), One Direction's was Forever Young by Alphaville and Cher's was Impossible by Shontelle.

I'm sure her first single after the winner's single would've still been an original song....

Surely this is a contender for the most forgotten top ten hit of all time?

#5 in 1998.

Has anyone even heard this before? :P

I remember that TOTP performance vividly.

Having seen the retro playlist in the Radio 1 Playlist thread, I think this one deserves to be added (assuming it hasn't already been mentioned):

#7 in 2002.

Shockingly I've never actually heard "It's Goin' Down" before... it doesn't particularly surprise me that it went top 10, LP were a massive deal at that point with "In The End" going top 10 a few months earlier and the remix of "Points of Authority" soon to follow it. Weird that it was Mike Shinoda's highest peaker until "What I've Done", it does sound like a Linkin Park parody.

#7 in 1998, the singer performed on TOTP with a straitjacket.

Jason Donovan - "Hang On To Your Love" top 10 in 1990:

The second most famous mime act after Milli Vanilli...Black Box with "Fantasy" in the same year....made #6

When you think of Whigfield....you think "Saturday Night" and a one hit wonder.....she had other singles....this beauty made #7 in 1995 "Think of you" - the lyric was being changed from "need you inside me" to "beside me" - don't know why......I only found out this in 2006! Easily her best track imo

Follow-up to "Saturday Night"...."Another Day" but think "Saturday Night" with different lyrics and a change of tempo.....good but "Think of You" was better. Lost in the Christmas chart run-in....but made top 10:

Even Madge is no stranger to this......"You'll See" from late 1995. This song is sooooooooo gorgeous and emotional. I love the lyrics to this song. It wasn't even included on her Celebration Best of! :(

I know this is cheating a bit...."Take a Bow" was her first single to miss the top 10 in the UK yet one of her best selling in the US! Like "You'll See" - underrated, emotional and gorgeous. She looks stunning in this video:

I thought You'll See was quite remembered! I often hear it as a soundbed on various things. Take A Bow was used in a famous scene in Friends too and is more remembered than a lot of her top ten hits I'd say.

Good call with the Whigfield songs though, Think Of You is great  By the same token, Gina G managed two further top ten hits that weren't Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit!

Yep, remember it well. I was slightly terrified of the song for ages exactly because of THAT performance. Watching her thrashing on stage in that straight-jacket like she was possessed was just a bit o_O for me at the time (although that was the point I guess!)

Here's the TOTP performance. Doesn't look so scary all these years later though. :D

AMAZING song, by the way. One of my favourite dance tunes of the 90s, easily.

Cheating a bit with this too since it reached #11, but deserves a mention

This song was great  Great video too

And, lest we forget, this remains the closest Natalia Kills has got to having a top 10 hit (#11 in 2005)

#5 in 1996, one of the finest among the 90's r&b balladry IMO but it's hardly remembered nowadays.

Can't believe I've never heard of this song until today. A comedy rap-metal version of the Three Little Pigs nursery rhyme by Green Jelly, which somehow reached #5 in the UK charts in 1993 (around the same time that Suede's "Animal Nitrate" was in the charts).

You'll See did so much better in Europe than Take a Bow which was a super smash in the US. Weird times but I guess it was because TAB was the last single from Bedtime Stories and YS promoted the STR collection.

Actually, Take A Bow was the 2nd single from Bedtime Story, with Bedtime Story and Human Nature following up.

And the woman singing lead in that performance is Rebecca Wheatley, who I already mentioned in this thread with her #10 solo hit, Stay With Me Baby, from 2000! Not bad going for a mere television actress though.

I have this on a compilation too - it's the very last track on New Hits 98.
