This song is anything but unmemorable. Maybe people just forget it reached number one because it was so different?

A song truly ahead of its time.

Couldn't agree more! 'Black Coffee' was by far and above one of my singles of 2000.

My personal non-number 1's would probably include the following:

911 - A Little Bit More (#1 in January 1999 - I think they were a bit of a non-event by this point. Certainly put next to 'Bodyshakin' anyway)

BLACK LEGEND - You See The Trouble With Me (#1 in June 2000 - Barry White tribute act set to faceless dance beat)

HEAR'SAY - The Way To Your Love (#1 in June 2001 - basically the biggest rip off of S Club 7's Natural meets Celine Dion's That's The Way It Is. Noel and Kym were massively shrieky on this as well)

DARIUS - Colourblind (#1 in August 2002 - not forgotten for me personally because I liked Darius and I always thought he had some pretty good songs, but for many now he probably is forgotten...)

DAVID SNEDDON - Stop Living The Lie (#1 in January 2003 - bad sixth form poetry set to MOR, victory lap backing track. Eww)

BRIAN MCFADDEN - Real To Me (#1 in September 2004 - yes Brian. We know you were so hard done by. We know you think that whole boyband marlarkey was fake/controlling etc etc. Change the scratched record you whinging idiot)

MCFLY - basically every #1 they had after 'All About You'. Shame because with the exception of 'Please Please' (which has not dated well at all) I thought 'I'll Be OK', 'Star Girl' and 'Transylvania/Baby's Coming Back' were all very deserving and are among some of their best singles for me. But of course it was cool to hate them and cuss them down by this point so none of what I say is gonna be relevant...but who knows. Maybe with Harry being on Strictly last year they could have an Alesha Dixon style career renaissance?

ORSON - No Tomorrow (#1, February 2006 - terrible band, even more terrible overplayed song. End of.)

SANDI THOM - I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (#1, June 2006 - see thoughts on David Sneddon)

RAZORLIGHT - America (#1, October 2006 - of all the Razorlight songs to do it it was this one and not say, 'Golden Touch'. Massive snoozefest)

Sandi Thom was one that came to mind....I am sure it's memorable with some people, but I doubt the general public know it. She still sings but with VERY limited success. I prefered "What If I'm Right".

David Sneddon.....again I doubt anyone remembers that, unless you're a Reality TV fanatic. Black Legend....insulting that was #1 yet "I Turn To You" by Christina Aguilera was #19....injustice.

Sandi Thom is very much remembered, Orson less so but I'm still pretty sure people will easily recognise it were it to be played somewhere. Likewise "America", although had "Somewhere Else" got to the top (or even "In The Morning") that would have been quite an unmemorable no.1.
Star Girl is still played every Friday on the Chris Moyles show :D at least I used to hear it then, I don't have to get up that early any more :(
Sandi herself may be forgotten but most people would know exactly what you're talking about if you said, 'Do you remember I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair'?'
The Sonique song was absolutely huge at that time - it being 3 weeks at the top back them was quite an achiemevent and it also was a big hit all over Europe and the US. Doubt anyone who was into charts in the early 00s is unabble to remember it

Even though i am not from the UK i remember loads of the songs named - think it depens on how interested you are in music and charts

Those were just bad suggestions from 2000. It Feels So Good, Dont Call Me Baby and Born To Make You Happy were huge all over Europe that year. "Masses Against The Clashes", "Stomp", "Day And Night", "You See The Trouble With Me", "Go Let It Out", "Bound 4 Da Reload", "Fool Again", "Bag It Up" are a lot more forgotten imo.

No way is 'Don't Call Me Baby' by Madison Avenue "forgotton". Maybe to the regular music listener but anyone who goes to nightclubs are bound to hear these #1 hits from 2000 and think "I remember this, love it..." or something along those lines.

Forgotton no. 1 singles are usually the fanbase chart toppers that only appeal directly to the fans for a short amount of time. So as already mentioned McFly 'Please Please' isn't exactly a song I can remember how it goes off the top of my head. I remember the song being no. 1 (chart nerd :D ) but would need to go on YouTube to help me remember how the song goes. Same with Westlife 'Unbreakable'. 'Mandy' was ghastly but even I can just about remember how that song goes (sadly :( ).

I only know it from Family Guy.

Exactly. Most number ones are never played on radio today, either because they never play old music, they're dated, etc. Which is understandable. However whenever they do get played, whether on the radio, the club, on tv, and people think "oh yes I remember this", those are memorable number ones, even if they're never played regularly anymore. However the ones that get played and you think "I dont remember how this goes", then yes, I'd say its pretty unmemorable.

Yes, McFly's Star Girl is still very well known to the public as Chris Moyles has made it so!

"America" has memories of my holiday to Benidorm back in October.....I heard it on the radio @ 3am whilst in my cab to Birmingham Airport. That is played quite often on my local radio station.

I agree about the majority of the 2000 #1s.....I don't even remember "Masses Against The Classes", though I can see this being used as campaign for some reason with the Jubilee.

America and Oopsy Daisy were pretty big hits to be honest. I'm surprised people don't remember them.

Some other suggestions aswell. Like Toy Soldiers, Welcome to the Black Parade, Goodies?!? SERIOUSLY? If we were asked to list classic #1s from the past few years I'd probably have mentioned those.

The fact that you of all people (no offence intended) are extolling the virtues of "Welcome to the Black Parade" just goes to show how daft the suggestion that it wasn't remembered was.

These are the number ones from 2000 that I can't hum (any part of the song - as there are some songs that I can only hum the chorus to)

2000 Westlife 'I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun' (have never heard this, I think I've heard the original of SITS on radio 2 once but not this version thankfully)

2000 Gabrielle 'Rise'

2000 Oasis 'Go Let It Out'

2000 All Saints 'Pure Shores' (I've youtubed it a few times but it's so forgettable)

2000 Steps 'Stomp'

2000 Spice Girls 'Holler/Let Love Lead The Way'

2007 Leon Jackson 'When You Believe' (the least memorable X Factor winner)

2009 Jenkins/West/Jones/Gibb 'Islands In The Stream' (I remember it was terrible and not funny, but again, it's a cheap cover that I've forgotten)

I think we've summed it to a tee with that list.

I know this is recent, but I think people have forgot the annual X factor charity scam cover with "Wishing On A Star".
