I was eating dinner when the top 4 went on, so I'll comment on it now. My mum owns all 4 top albums.

Oasis are a great band in general but this era is the best, I have heard most tracks from this album thanks to my mum loving it.

I didn't recognize the ABBA song that radio 2 were playing but I do love a lot of their songs.

Haven't heard that Beatles album but I probably know some songs from it. Cba to look up the tracklisting at the moment.

And of course the number one album was FULLY DESERVED  Queen's discography of hits is amazing, I can't name a bad song from them at the moment. A real shame they didn't play Bohemian Rhapsody, however I do love Crazy Little Thing Called Love too.

Chart over. Thermometer out. :D

Eh. Not a fan of The Corrs. I'd imagine Shoat is raving to this somewhere right now though.

THAT I AM. A truly outstanding album, and by far the best and shiniest example of Shoat-type MOR in recorded history.

did the publish anymore?

Being in the west end will surely help keep these albums selling in their thousands (referring to abba and queen)

With Those figures, From this text,

From soft rock to Noughties pop, a look back at the biggest albums of the past 50 years reveals that the tastes of the British public are nothing if not eclectic. Glam rock stalwarts Queen have topped a list of the best-selling albums in British history, fending off stiff competition from Abba and The Beatles.

Queen's 1981 Greatest Hits collection has sold 5.8 million copies since its release and will be revealed as the chart-topper in a Radio 2 special presented today by Tony Blackburn. The group sealed their domination of the chart with another entry in the Top 10 – a second hits compilation that came out 10 years later and which has sold 3.8 million.

Queen's nearest rival was The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which has sold 5 million. That came just ahead of Gold, Abba's greatest hits album, which has sold 4.9 million, according to figures from the Official Charts Company.

Queen's lasting appeal has been measured in numerous polls and charts over the years. Their six-minute epic "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the third-highest-selling single in UK history. The band is also unrivalled in its number of tribute outfits.

"They have got a such a wide range of music. If you look through the catalogue, there are about 140 to 150 songs, and it ranges from hard rock to dance, funk and almost classical," said Kevin Goodwin, the bass player in a Queen tribute band, The Bohemians.

Conspicuously absent from the Top 40 are the Rolling Stones, but a host of more recent acts have stormed their way on to the list. Adele's 2011 debut 21 stands at No 6, and Leona Lewis's 2007 hit Spirit comes in at No 20.

I Have the June 2009 figures That I calculated with those new ones.

3- GOLD- GREATEST HITS- Abba

5- THRILLER- Michael Jackson

15- COME ON OVER- Shania Twain

29- LIFE FOR RENT- Dido

33- HOPES AND FEARS- Keane

36- SCISSOR SISTERS- Scissor Sisters

I think I might consider listening to or buying these albums :D

I have tweaked a couple of figures.

So Queen selling around 50k a year? Should pass 6 million by 2014 then??

And with Abba selling around 80k year they should overtake Queen by 2035!

Unless they release Mamma Mia 2 in the near future.....

No punk or hard rock/metal in the top 40? Unless you count Queens early hard rock career and a couple of songs off Pepper.

Punk was never a massive album seller in its heyday, I'd imagine "Never Mind the Bollocks" has passed the million mark by now. "American Idiot" has crossed two million though so it won't have been far off the top 40.

As for metal, Metallica's Black Album was never quite as massive here as it was in the States - same with "Appetite for Destruction" and I think Iron Maiden have had too many albums for one to really go stratospheric. I would have expected a Greatest Hits by them to have sold close to a million by now though but none have got anywhere near.
