Battlefield by Jordin Sparks was pretty unlucky, it was #11 for 3 weeks iirc and hung around just outside the top 10 for a good few weeks more, and that song really deserved top 10 imo

This!! Battlefield is one of my favourite songs ever

A perfect example of an unlucky song would be Adele's Set Fire To The Rain.

It went to #11 but would have got higher up the chart if the video was released in time as the extra promotion would have made it climb up the chart.

My definition of an unlucky song would be similar to Dandy*'s example except the artist and the record company would be able to capitalize on the song's chart position and promotion but would not use the opportunity to expand the chart position and the promotion. :D

In terms of challenging for number one - 'Moves Like Jagger' and 'Foundations'. The former definitely wins first place!

In terms of challenging for top 10 - 'Battlefield' is the only one I can recall.

In terms of top 40 - 'Bad Girls'?

Oh Foundations is a good one, wasn't it like 16 copies off number 1 one week and something like 132 the other, that was very unlucky!
The Saturdays. There, I've said it! (Sorry girls, I love you really...)

If anything, they are the luckiest. Somehow being able to flog shit repeatedly to the masses. :o

What do you think is the most unlucky song in UK chart history?

Define 'unlucky' in this context, please.

Yeah, I think one of the close weeks was against Rihanna, and the other Timabaland/Keri Hilson ()?

Lose Your Breath was #2 behind 4 different #1s, all of which it outsold, so that song was a bit "unlucky" (but not really, since it was a massive hit).

Foundations  Gosh, I adored that song when it was out! Still love Kate Nash now. Gutted Foundations couldn't get #1. :(

Unlucky in terms of chart positions and how many missed opportunities a song has had of becoming number 1.

'Set fire to the rain' when it comes to top 10. It seemed to be lingering around 10 forever, and had Amy not died she would have peaked at 10.
Demi Lovato's Skyscraper should have been a massive hit. But it was held back for no reason in the UK, there was no promotion and no radio support.
I always consider Alicia Keys as pretty unlucky. She had a massive debut single which missed by a couple of places, and then two versions of the same song, one missed out by one place and the other missed by three. And Doesn't Mean Anything and ESOM(PT.II) were both #2 on iTunes for a bit. I really want her to get a #1 at somepoint but I don't think it's going to happen. :(

That sounds like a post Kobbar would make  especially the part in bold. Where is he these days?

Ken Barrie's Postman Pat had three separate chart runs, never making the top 40 in any of them - #44 in 1982, #54 in 1983 and #59 in 1984.

'Forever' by Drake feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem spent 10 straight weeks in the top 60 but never made the top 40 (peaked at 42 for two weeks).

Drake has a bit of a habit of long chart runs without making the top 40 - 'Headlines' was top 100 for 10 weeks going no higher than #57 and today 'The Motto' (feat. Lil Wayne) has spent an eighth week in the top 100 going no higher than #80, exactly matching what The Black Keys' Lonely Boy has done.

JME's 96 F**kries was pushed out of the top 40 at the last second by Etta James' death - another Kobbar-esque post I know but that is pretty unfortunate. 'Hold On' by Lazee feat. Neverstore was also pushed out of the top 40 at the last second by Michael Jackson's death. I loved that song :(

Forever is always in the top 1000 whenever I check aswell, even though it's 2012. And there's all those top 5 hits from last year which have completely dropped out the top 1000...

And JME is literally the worst artist that could happen to. It's so unfair.

Britney's -I Wanna Go- was so unlucky to chart in top 100. It was 9 weeks between #101-#200  Itunes peak was around #80, but that was not enough for top 100 and in that week when she reached top 80 on iTunes she peaked @ #111 on official chart, better #111 than #101
As an artist: SASH!

So many number 2 hits without reaching the top :(
