Posted April 27, 201213 yr http://www.latestnewsexplorer.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Carly-Rae-Jepsen-Call-Me-Maybe.jpg It would have fit in perfectly in 1997-1999, and could have sold just as well back then as it does now! How long until "CMM" becomes a million seller? By August or September?
April 27, 201213 yr Yes, I think it's bound to sell a million now. Probably before the end of the year. I'm not sure if it's going to sell 100,000 again this week. Although I keep getting surprised at how much it sells every week, so who knows? I think Call Me Maybe and Moves Like Jagger both have quite a "disco" sound to them. Perhaps the public really like that at the moment. Edited April 27, 201213 yr by Eric_Blob
April 27, 201213 yr I'm really starting to get worried that this is the year when I start to lose interest in the charts and instead become one of those annoying people who complains that music isn't as good as it was in 'the old days', aka whenever they were the right age for it. At only 23 as well. To me, this and Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know', while mildly pleasant, I have no idea how they're going to be both million-sellers. Ok, yeah, number 1 for a week at a push, but a million?! That puts it up there with Bohemian Rhapsody, Come On Eileen, Wannabe, I Gotta Feeling...all songs I can understand their success, but these?! Meanwhile Fun's 'We Are Young', which I absolutely adore, hovers around the top 3 selling 100k or so. That's a song I could happily see selling a million...Carly and Gotye just really confuse me.
April 27, 201213 yr I'm fairly certain 'We Are Young' will sell close to if not over a million in the long run.

It's just because sales are so high at the moment though, that songs can so 'easily' sell a million now.
April 27, 201213 yr Yeah most people from 2007 probably think Umbrella is a million seller when its only sold half that....2012 is good because the charts ar finally moving away from electro pop music a bit more!
April 27, 201213 yr ^ Yeah. And I find it so werid that complete non-entities of songs like Yeah 3x, Sweat, etc. are selling similar amounts to really iconic and massive songs from when I was younger like Ignition, In Da Club, Crazy in Love, etc. It's just STRANGE to me. I guess it's a similar case with million-sellers now, having songs like Call Me Maybe listed with all those legendary songs.
April 27, 201213 yr I'm fairly certain 'We Are Young' will sell close to if not over a million in the long run. Sadly I agree too. :( I can see it climbing to #1 actually.

Truely popular songs will continue to sell and eventually reach milestone targets like aerosmith this week there whereas sweat etc will sell next to nothing as time passes!
April 27, 201213 yr I also wonder if Titanium could also get there eventually? It is bound to continue selling throughout the year and will likely be used in The Voice, X factor etc at some point as well. It may not do it this year but then it only needs to sell another 10k each week until the end of the year (a tall order but it'll likely sell more than that for the next few months). I always find it a shame that songs from the mid noughties will never have their true potential ever known (if thats the right saying). Songs like Hips Don't Lie, Umbrella, Chasing Cars etc would have all likely sold a million by now had they released in todays climate. I guess it is something we will never know though. Oh and Carly is pretty certain to reach the million mark at some point I'd imagine (as long as it doesnt drop off too quick). Quite a few of my mates HATE that sort of music yet like CMM which surprised me earlier today.
April 28, 201213 yr I was saying that a lot last year, and I'm only 19!! But I think 2012 is actually such an improvement so far (musically). It's just because sales are so high at the moment though, that songs can so 'easily' sell a million now. That and because back then digital downloading wasn't even a factor. Now songs can be bought from £0.59-0.99 and that equals 1 sale whereas back then the physical singles were £3-5 each (I think anyways) and that equals 1 copy back then. Plus nowadays if the song is on a single or an EP and that is selling well, it gets added on as well.
April 28, 201213 yr i think gotye will be a classic for sure! In 20 years' time when the classic tracks of the 2010s are being determined then I'm sure STIUTK will be amoung them. But Call me Maybe? I don't think so. Sure, it's a decent enough song, but that's about it. I fail to see what is persuading 100k+ people to download this every week. Or perhaps it's just one of those track that few people really love, but an awful lot of people like it enough to buy it. Conversely perhaps relatively few people really hate it. Gotye on the other hand is so different, so distinctive that even though I love it, I can well imagine a lot of people loathe it.
April 28, 201213 yr Yes, I think it's bound to sell a million now. Probably before the end of the year. I'm not sure if it's going to sell 100,000 again this week. The way it's going, 1m certainly isn't out of the question, though I think she may just fall just short of 100k this week. I'm really starting to get worried that this is the year when I start to lose interest in the charts and instead become one of those annoying people who complains that music isn't as good as it was in 'the old days', aka whenever they were the right age for it. At only 23 as well. Don't worry, I was just 20 when that first happened to me - but you can recover. I'm fairly certain 'We Are Young' will sell close to if not over a million in the long run. I doubt it - despite its fans here, it is gving little indication it has that sort of potential overall sales. Yeah most people from 2007 probably think Umbrella is a million seller when its only sold half that.... More like 3/4's now...
April 28, 201213 yr The way it's going, 1m certainly isn't out of the question, though I think she may just fall just short of 100k this week. I think it's pretty inevitable that it will get there. Sales just aren't going to suddenly plummet. It will be above 50k for many weeks to come and obviously accumulating many more sales as it moves slowly down the chart. Don't worry, I was just 20 when that first happened to me - but you can recover. Haha, I at least made it to my early 30s before that happened!
April 28, 201213 yr If 'Call Me Maybe' sells another 90-100k this week, it will have sold 400k already in just 4 weeks on the chart which is really impressive. If its sales can stay above 50k for another 2 months (which is possible) then Carly is well on her way to a million. 'Somebody That I Used To Know' only needs another 130k or so to hit the million sales mark, and I'm sure this will be achieved within the next 2/3 months. I think both tracks are worthy of million sales status. For me, both don't instantly seem like classic tracks in the making. I've found these two tracks have been incredible growers - they've grown in popularity over time, and this shows in the fact both tracks have enjoyed week-on-week sales increases. When a song managed to hit no. 1 and increase its sales whilst at no. 1, you know there is a genuinely popular song at the top of the charts. Gotye and Carly Rae Jepsen have done exactly that.
April 28, 201213 yr If 'Call Me Maybe' sells another 90-100k this week, it will have sold 400k already in just 4 weeks on the chart which is really impressive. It already *has* passed 400k - see the narrative for the Friday mids...
April 28, 201213 yr To remind people: reaching or not reaching a million in sales doesn't make a song any more or less a hit. Michael Jackson has only one million seller and it's Earth Song, not any of his huge classics. Madonna has none.
