May 1, 201213 yr Don't The Script write and produce their own material? And play instruments? Don't see the Westlife comparison at all. I like 'Call Me Maybe' but baffled at how well it's doing. It's so basic. If Miley Cyrus couldn't break the top ten with See You Again, The Climb or Party In The USA (which were all much better pop songs) then I don't see why this should sell a MILLION copies. Hype + popularity = chart success, hence westlifes 14 number 1s!
May 1, 201213 yr Well across this forum (personal charts, Buzzjack Song Contest etc.) there are, and pretty much all my friends love it. Although you're right, I'm kind of just making generalisations based on a small sample of the population around me, I can't defiinitively say lots of people love it tbh. OH GOD YES. Second only to Olly Murs for me in my list of hawt men :kink: (off topic but I have to be a whore whenever hotness of someone hot is mentioned). Completely understandable, i've seen he has that affect on loads of boys and girls B-) And in relation to the actual topic ( ) Call me maybe will most definitely be a million seller, the interesting thing is if it'll overtake Gotye in the year-end chart or not.
May 2, 201213 yr CMM is no worse than Wannabe or Hit Me Baby One More Time and I'd be happy for it to sell a million. Well actually it is worse in my opinion. At least Wannabe or BOMT had something, CMM is nothing special. The production needs something extra. When I was listening to the song, I was waiting for it to go somewhere, but it didn't, it doesn't really progress anywhere. I'm very surprised that it got to #1. Another example of how people over here will buy any old rubbish.

The other two have cultural presence which came with being part of a pop phenomenom - Carly could remain a one-hit wonder which would negate the impact of "Call Me Maybe" somewhat.

I actually prefer "Call Me Maybe" to either though :P "...Baby One More Time" is better written but (as I've said before) Britney's vocal tone drives me up the wall.

And maybe the fact that almost everyone on this forum loves 'Call Me Maybe' is an indication that it's far from 'any old rubbish'. Edited May 2, 201213 yr by B.r.É
May 2, 201213 yr And maybe the fact that almost everyone on this forum loves 'Call Me Maybe' is an indication that it's far from 'any old rubbish'. Really? I though it was about a 50/50 like/dislike around here. Technically it is average, but it does have a certain Rebecca Black-like charm
May 2, 201213 yr I agree that it doesn't really "go anywhere". There's no real build up to the last chorus and when it plays, it just sounds the exact same as the other two choruses. There's no ad-libs or big notes or anything, just a repeat.
May 2, 201213 yr And all songs are different. Not all songs have to be the same. As with Somebody Like You last year, maybe its the simplicity of the song that catches people?
May 2, 201213 yr Nope, probably 800k (ish) So you think it'll sell in total less than double what it's done in the last four weeks alone?
May 2, 201213 yr More than likely it will pass 500k and then some this week so on average 100k per week so far
May 2, 201213 yr And all songs are different. Not all songs have to be the same. As with Somebody Like You last year, maybe its the simplicity of the song that catches people? ^Exactly, in the least patronising way possible, simple songs have wide appeal as they're just so instantly relateable. Call Me Maybe is very hard to actively dislike, sure 'average' but 'bad', I just can't see it, plus it certainly got stuck in my head for a while so I'd imagine its the same with a lot of other people. Likewise with Someone Like You, I find it very overrated & overplayed and the lyrics may not be the most original, but I certainly don't dislike it and can completely see it how others love and can relate to it's universal theme. In fact, I think the best selling songs of last year were quite simple lyrically and just look what happened there... Edited May 2, 201213 yr by C.W
May 3, 201213 yr So you think it'll sell in total less than double what it's done in the last four weeks alone? Now it has reached its peak yes! its not going to sell 100k solid for 6 week is it if that is what you are getting at.
May 3, 201213 yr I wasn't surprised when this song went to #1 because by then it was pretty obvious, but I am shocked that now it is (pretty much) guaranteed to exceed 1 million sales. I will join the chorus of people who think it is "pretty good". I like it but there is nothing amazing or original or special about it. It seems like a case of the right song at the right time - people are bored of ballads and R&B dance choons and are going for something with a bit of a 90s retro feel. To put this song in the same bracket as Someone Like You, Moves Like Jagger and Just The Way You Are (not forgetting some of the total classics among the million-sellers) is a bit baffling.

Even if it were to sell 80k, then 70k the week after and so on, that's another 360k to make a total of nearly 800k - and it's hardly going to drop out of the top 40 in eight weeks, is it? To me it's actually in a similar bracket to "Moves Like Jagger" - a pure pop song that's done well because it's well-written, catchy as hell and a bit different. Although whether it becomes a BIG million seller (1.2 million and over) like MLJ depends on how well its airplay holds up, IMO.
May 3, 201213 yr Now it has reached its peak yes! its not going to sell 100k solid for 6 week is it if that is what you are getting at. It's not going to stay THAT high for much longer but I don't see it shifting from the top 10 for at least another month and I can see it staying top 40 for ages.
May 4, 201213 yr This seems to have become some sort of INESCAPABLE cultural phenomenon. People everywhere whistling it, humming it, remarking under hushed breaths that they actually secretly think it's really good. As pop songs go it certainly seems to have had a penetration rate along the lines of most massive million selling megasmashes...
