May 20, 201213 yr Author OASIS- ALL AROUND THE WORLD- NON NUMBER ONE http://991.com/NewGallery/Oasis-All-Around-The-Wo-164648.jpg NEW PEAK POSITION: 2 Getting 1998 started it's a record that I don't think can really complain about its demotion, "All Around The World" took advantage of the January sales slump hit No 1 in early 1998. As a third single from the "Be Here Now" album it suffered as the album had already shifted over 1.5 million copies by the time the track got round to released, whilst that didn't stop sales of the comparable third single from WTSMG ("Wonderwall" which went on to be a million seller itself) they were by 1998 not the band they were in 1996. Another hasty decline 1-5-14 probably reflected how much this one sapped into the public conciousness. CkuPpnmG3U0
May 20, 201213 yr Author CORNERSHOP- BRIMFUL OF ASHA- NON NUMBER ONE http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d2/Brimful_Of_Asha.jpg NEW PEAK POSITION: 2 It's sole week outselling Dion's "Titanic" isn't enough to give it a repeat performance on this survey. A song which made No 60 in its original form in 1997 it took the (then) magic hands of Fatboy Slim to zap it up into the version that we all know and love, it's a tribute to Indian Singer Asha Bhosle and whilst it opened with sales of over 200k there were few tracks who could match the power of THAT record in early 1998.... 7ELTXK-fgyM
May 20, 201213 yr CORNERSHOP- BRIMFUL OF ASHA- NON NUMBER ONE I really like this song :( (the Fatboy Slim popular remix version of course) Sad to see it being a non-number one but at least its remembered well :D
May 20, 201213 yr :( I absolutely LOVE Brimful Of Asha, I've been quite regularly playing it again this year. The full Norman Cook version is really rather fabulous. As soon as I saw this thread, I just knew most of my favourites were going to get relegated! :D
May 20, 201213 yr Author MADONNA- FROZEN- NON NUMBER ONE http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/38/FROZEN-CD.jpg NEW PEAK POSITION: 2 .....Which also spells trouble for this one. Madonna's big "Comeback" was aided by the production skills of William Orbit who was himself a relative unknown at the time, it's position in this thread was probably aided by the release of the album "Ray Of Light" which came out just a week after the single and took sales from the singles' subsequent weeks allowing Dion's consistancy to reap rewards with a full month on top of the charts.... fQChu-ddjbE&feature=related

May 20, 201213 yr  Controversial but there's no denying 'Frozen' has become a Madonna classic alongside all her other classic singles. Celine Dion might've had big sales over a longer period of time but just like Hanson, it's a case of Sales + Quality = No (although I sort of have a soft spot for 'MHWGO' compared to the utter nonsense that was 'Mmmbop') I've also realised that using this system, one of my least fave UK #1 singles of 1998 will most likely gain an extra week at the top. I shall see if Gezza mentions this as we progress through 1998.

Personally I like that this got to #1 purely for the length record which makes it another odd chart topper in an era of many of them (even if the song itself is shite and a typical Oasis track stretched out in an incredibly tedious way). Now that's a record worth making. http://imgsrv2.tennisuniverse.com/wtaworld/images/smilies/bowdown.gif

May 20, 201213 yr It's interesting to see what gets demoted. It's a bit like the classic no.2s we've discussed and it being a shame they didn't make no.1. As has been said, there will never be a perfect way to do this. I wonder how long it'll be before we see a track promoted to no.1 in 98.

I'm quite confident in the chances of a certain #2 in June/July getting a promotion (though I'm well aware everyone else hates it and will probably be grumbling if so).

May 20, 201213 yr Just to forewarn you Gezza, there will be MAJOR tantrums if Robyn gets relegated to non-#1 status in 2007. :D

May 20, 201213 yr Your threads are always great Gezza, but this thread is fantastic. The charts based on 3 weeks sales is something I've always wanted to work out myself if I had the appropriate information to hand so many thanks for doing this. The idea was touted briefly at some point when the singles chart was in decline to try and give it more stability and I personally thought it was possibly a good idea during the god awful days of new number one's every week (the majority of which have been forgotten by the general public). The other idea was also on working it out based on ratio of cost. It is without doubt that a significant amount of songs made no.1 only because they were available at a far cheaper price on that first week of release. Find it quite startingly how serious people can take a thread as if you are actually changing history, just because of a song (or more likely an act) they like has had a No.1 demoted based on the criteria of this thread. Have to agree with T Boy, it is very rude when someone has put in alot of hard work to produce a thread of interest to just moan about it. Stop reading it then. My favourite songs are predominantly by high fan based acts who have high first week sales so they will all be penalised by this criteria, but I won't be moaning. As Gezza has stated there is no definitive way of coming up with Non No.1's and as ever it is all down to opinion. Just sit back and enjoy. Great work Gezza, looking forward to reading what's to come.
May 20, 201213 yr I think two of my three favourite number 1s ever will both be almost certainly demoted, one should come up very soon :( (not that I'm moaning about this thread, its very interesting even if I wouldn't personally some of these as 'non number 1s', but I guess fanbase-driven acts that sell a lot first week and remain quite but not fully consistent don't have as much wide appeal as songs that constantly sell high, so in that sense 'non number 1s' could apply well to them) Edited May 20, 201213 yr by C.W
May 20, 201213 yr 'Brimful of Asha' and 'Frozen' are part of my favourite consecutive trio of number one's, luckily the other one won't be demoted!
