Timbaland makes his vocals gruff on purpose for some reason. Here's the acapella of The Way I Are for example, so you can hear all the vocal effects he uses. In the verses he layers and echos his vocals or something, so they're really "grizzly", whilst in the chorus his voice is a lot higher and "smooth":

That isn't Timbaland on the chorus! Isn't it D.O.E.?

Timbaland is singing the chorus - you can check some live performances in Youtube. But live his sound in the chorus is more similar to the sound in the verse.

NEW NUMBER ONE- 23.02.08- NICKELBACK- ROCKSTAR- 1 wk

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/Nickelback_rockstar.png

Well it had to happen didn't it? Just as long running No 1 hits by Basshunter and Duffy were changing places it allows the more persistant "Rockstar" to sneek a week at the top on this thread! C'mon was it REALLY that bad? :(

THE TING TINGS- THAT'S NOT MY NAME- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Missing out by just 3k the Ting Tings only No 1 single gets demoted at the hands of Rihanna's "Take A Bow" which was only behind them for one week so it's perhaps not that surprising.

COLDPLAY- VIVA LA VIDA- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Coldplay_-_Viva_la_Vida.jpg

PEAK POSITION: 2

To be honest "Viva La Vida" was always a lucky No 1, seling just 23k the lowest weekly tally for any week in 2008, its winning margin was just under 3k and here it loses out to the far more consistant selling "Closer" by Ne-Yo which enjoys a fortnight at No 1 here before Dizzee Rascal takes over. If only the song had been eligible to chart the week before it actually did (it would have been at No 4) then it would have retained it's position!

 'Rockstar' getting promoted would easily get the  treatment. I was more than happy when Duffy went from behind in the midweeks to overtaking Nickelback and getting the no. 1 that Sunday. Such a shame Duffy messed up her career so quickly. This happened before the second album was even released. The release of 'Rain On Your Parade' pretty much did the damage imo. :( Still don't understand how Duffy's vocals managed to get so tedious in a short amount of time.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Damn you Gezza. <_>

Was expected tbf :(

2008 was possibly my least favourite year for music from the 00s, I found all the massive hits so overrated and have picked up very few personal favourites from the year. The only great thing was seeing Coldplay get a number 1 - and now that's gone   Rockstar was hideous, that & Mercy would be a strong contender for worst top 2 of all time.

I strongly believe that Gezza should be reflecting a song's true sales and that he should count the copies from the week before so VLV can retain it's position.

Gezza, I know that deep down in your heart you know that this would be the correct and proper thing to do in the circumstances. :D

I've text Chris Martin asking him to account for why he broke chart rules and made the song chart ineligible. Should his answer be sufficent I will reverse the post! :D

It's not that bad, no, but it undoubtedly had an affect on an even worse record, Kid f***ing Rock, getting to #1 later in the year...

Amazing chart run at the time. Probably the first really exciting download chart run that could have never happened before - watching it take off after the Christmas songs f***ed off after hanging around going nowhere for a while and just grow and grow as popularity as more people discovered it was fascinating regardless of the thoughts of the record. Plus I have to say I absolutely love it when the biggest hit from the album occurs later in the campaign and reverses the fortunes of the entire album, doesn't happen often enough and is more rare these days unfortunately.

What was wrong with Rain On Your Parade? Do you mean how her voice sounds on it? To be honest, I thought it was very similar to Mercy, but that's not the sort of thing that ends careers. Or am I missing something?

Does Low by Flo Rida still miss out on #1 here? That had such an incredible chart run. Similar to Rockstar's, except compressed a bit.

Rockstar is still the worst song I've ever heard.

With regards to Kanye West, he's always going to use a lot of sampling, no matter what, so you probably shouldn't listen to his music at all if you can't stand sampling, because you'll only be disappointed. Same goes for Timbaland, he samples all the time (even in The Way I Are he does, and he co-produced Stronger), and practically every other artist in their genre. It's completely normal, it's never going away.

I didn't say I couldn't stand sampling. In fact, it can be amazing. I just dont like when someone takes a well known song, takes one of the hooks and adds nothing but rapping. He adds nothing to the Daft Punk hook and that would be somewhat acceptable if no-one had heard it in the first place but as it is so well known he should have more artistic ability to do something with it.

Timbaland is singing the chorus - you can check some live performances in Youtube. But live his sound in the chorus is more similar to the sound in the verse.

Have you not thought that the reason it sounds more similar to the verse live may be because he doesn't actually do the chorus on record? It's not like he can have D.O.E. at every live performance.

2008 Rapidly turns into quite a boring year where this thread doesn't differ from the real charts (except in terms of weeks songs spent at No 1) until we get to the end.....

GIRLS ALOUD- THE PROMISE- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

An impressive opening salvo of 77k wasn't enough to topple Pink and a massive 313k debut the following week for X Factor Finalists means that GA get squeezed out of another No 1, they keep only one chart topper on this thread- in fairness I always thought their better songs were the ones that failed to make No 1 anyway, still sad to see though.

BEYONCE- IF I WERE A BOY- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Whilst GA were certainly a victim of timing Beyonce got her lucky break withthis track entirely due to timing. In November 2008 as sales of X Factor Finalists were in free fall it managed to become a default No 1 selling a mere 48k to make the top, not so here were X Factor holds up better, or at least long enough for Leona Lewis's version of "Run" to debut at the top proving that she was, in this case, completely replaceable (boom boom :basil: ) No?
