ARCTIC MONKEYS- WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6c/Whenthesungoesdown.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

It comes within 6k of hitting the top on this thread but the second chart topper from the Monkeys follows the fate of the first and finds itself between Shayne Ward's million selling debut and Notorious B.I.G who were behind the arctics for only week of the songs chart runs. Again another opening of 39k was just 30 copies better than their debut hit evidencing perhaps they were still appealing to the same audience without, in reality, expanding it to provide them with a genuine hit of mass appeal.

MADONNA- SORRY- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/30/Sorrysingle0ot5pp.jpeg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

The second Madonna No 1 to take a tumble on our thread, "Sorry" was of course the second release from "Confessions On A Dancefloor" and on this thread plays second fiddle as the top of charts changed guard from Meck to Chico (oh the shame). In reality probably one a No 1 in the real world off the back of "Hung Up" the song was nowhere to be found in the Y/E top 40 so it can't really grumble here.

Sorry loses out to CHICO? Very glad it made #1 officially so.. eh...

And seeing the Arctics lose both of their #1s isn't good either.

NE-YO- SO SICK- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/ff/SoSickNeYo.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

It was a mad scrap for the top slot in the chart dated 1st April 2006, in our thread Chico was the outgoing No 1 and Gnarles Barkley was just about to register a massive weekly sale of 194k which would render all opposition pointless meaning that both Ne-Yo and Orson had only one week in which to both keep their No 1 status and in the end, and by a margin of 1,380 copies it was Orson's victory. So it is that Ne-yo loses and is here, stripped of his first No 1 hit.

Shame about the Arctics. SO glad Orson retained no.1 status despite being the lowest weekly no.1 sale ever. It does not deserve that tag.

Orson keeps their number 1?! :o

In the song's first 6 weeks on the chart it sold the least amount (weekly) during its week at No 1- strange chart fact fans! :o

I remember that being discussed a few months back. Examples of singles that had its loweest sale whilst at no. 1 but had better sales over the week when peaking at #2, #3, etc...
"No Tomorrow" was weird in that respect, I'm not really surprised it held onto its status. Ne-Yo a little unlucky to be the week before "Crazy" but if I recall correctly there was something very fishy about Embrace being a close #2 that week with possibly some missing sales, so perhaps deserved.

Weren't Embrace actually no. 1 in the midweeks then lost out to Ne-Yo in the end?

The chart rules of 2006 really ballsed up the UK charts for me. When all download sales counted towards the chart from January 2007 onwards, that was the best decision the OCC ever made. It's such a shame they didn't introduce that in the spring of 2006. The "delete single + 2 week delay = out of chart" format was an embarrassment to the UK charts. 'Crazy' going 01-01-01-01-01-01-01-01-01-02-05-OUT (of the top 200 singles chart, even top 1000) summed up everything that was wrong with the UK charts in 2006.

That was terrible. I remember songs would literally disappear. I knew Crazy would but Maneater left the charts from no.10 and it was only then I realised it had been deleted. Shame as 2006 was one of my favourite times for music but the chart rules were awful. It was rather funny to see all these songs fly back in the top 40 when the rules changed in 2007.

They CLAIMED that sales had been lost but I believe the OCC investigated and found none IIRC :D

I had pretty much stopped following the charts by 2006, so I can't say I had much opinion on the way they worked this year. I still checked to see what was #1 but no more than that - mind you, eventually I stopped even doing that. A combination of a rather awful personal life (particularly in the last half of the year) and simply not liking the music that was in them contributed to that. As I recall I only got sucked in again in May 2007 when I wanted to see where/if Umbrella had charted, lol.

Shame to see When The Sun Goes Down gone though. :( One of my favourites of that year, but expected with the awful mess parading as a The Notorious B.I.G. song hopping over it after its first week. Much prefer it to I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

Chico and Notorious BIG random o'clock single holding on to #1 <_<
This thread has reminded me of poor Embrace, Nature's Law is a stunning song and would have made for a rousing Take That single. Wish it had been a #1, I bought it on CD and DVD single and had never even liked an Embrace song before that!

Not even the amazing "Come Back To What You Know"? AND it was released in the GOLDEN YEAR (1998)

I think 2006 Embrace is by far the best!

I listened to Nature's Law today.....It's criminal that shit like Chasing Cars is heading for a million sale when Nature's Law is solid gold in comparison. Come Back to What You Know is even better.

MCFLY- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE/ DON'T STOP ME NOW- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d5/Pleaseplease.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 4

Another McFly No 1 single and another demotion. They were truly the masters of the fanbase track and "Please Please Please" is just your McFly-by-numbers track that the fans lapped up and whilst a chart trajectory of 1-6-12 wasn't their worse it's nothing to be proud of either.
