December 31, 20159 yr Personal feelings aside, that's actually a really good list. With the exception of 'Lay Me Down' and possibly 'Not Letting Go' (plus 'Marvin Gaye' at a push), all were absolutely massive hits.
December 30, 20168 yr Author We'll do a 2016 update tomorrow- Some alterations but needless to say that streaming has ironed out a lot of anomalies so don't expect too many revelations!
December 31, 20168 yr Author Well this is another thread which streaming has ruined :D :( anyway there are no promotions and merely one demotion in 2016.........sadly not Drake :D
December 31, 20168 yr I assume we lose Zayn Malik in favour of Jonas Blue? Considering their relative positions on the YTD chart that seems quite fair IMO. Good to see streaming is massively reducing the number of Non Number 1s. :D Edited December 31, 20168 yr by Doctor Blind
December 31, 20168 yr Author NON NUMBER ONE- ZAYN- PILLOWTALK NEW PEAK POSITION: 2 No surprise then that the only song to spend just a week at the top in 2016 gets demoted here to a No 2 position behind Lukas Graham. Impressive first week sales of 112k saw it make No 1 in the real world but overall it failed to sell the most in any three week period so he follows many a One Direction chart topper in coming a cropper in this thread. December 31, 20168 yr Its hard to believe only 1 track of 2016 peaked at #1 when last year we had quite a few. I think we have seen the back of the weekly #1 turnover, tracks will stay far longer at #1, apart from the odd one or two which might edge through.
December 31, 20168 yr Just to forewarn you Gezza, there will be MAJOR tantrums if Robyn gets relegated to non-#1 status in 2007. :D  SAME PS this thread is my new favourite thing, reading through the whole thing right now! Edited December 31, 20168 yr by Lenny
December 31, 20168 yr at last we've finally got rid of the 'non-#1s' :cheer: Well ZAYN is according to this thread, but to be fair he did open with big sales and was well inside the top 40 sellers of the year. It must be the first year in ages since we've had all the #1s of the year in the year-end top 40.
December 31, 20168 yr Maybe we could adapt to the times and have no2s that should have been no1 lol especially songs that were huge but stuck behind Drake for 15 weeks?!
December 31, 20168 yr Shame no one would have been promoted this year. 2016 was always destined to be boring, I guess.
March 3, 20196 yr Recently discovered this thread via the Chart Forum Index and it’s been a very interesting read. Excellent work Gezza! Nice to see some songs which narrowly missed #1 would be promoted by this methodology. I’d be interested to know if Robert Miles - Children would have been, if 1996 sales are available? Aside from losing a lot of good one week #1s, for me the main downside is that crazily high sales weeks get triple-counted e.g. for X Factor winners songs, often leading to them having extended runs at the top. However as a picture of what’s selling well at any point in time, it works well. (Back in 1997 I kept a record of what the Top 40 would look like without new entries in the same way as DanChartFan described on page 5. Apply that in 2011 and Moves Like Jagger would have had 7 weeks at #1 rather than #2.) I don’t know how much appetite there’s been to add 2017 and 2018 here - streaming has brought the #1 turnover down since this thread started and maybe taken some of the fun out of it in the process - but from a look at the weekly sales there would be some very close battles for #1 in 2018 in particular and at least one promotion...
