Trifoski shock all with out-of-the-blue win in Caerfyrddia

They extensively hyped up their own entry before and during the contest but no one took them seriously - but it turns out that the Trifoski national selection team know their stuff as they turned out to be absolutely spot on that they had the winner of BJSC LVI. Ghost Loft's 'So High' surprised some by even returning the nation to the final after three consecutive DNQs, but literally no one could have predicted it would end up beating the two hot faves N DNTN and Hendinia in a nail-biting finish. It's the country's first win and moreover their first top 15, having previously gone no higher than 17th place.

'So High' received a total of 137 points - fairly low for a winner and with matching closeness. The top 3 were separated by just four points. N DNTN and Hendinia were the widely predicted top 2 and they do indeed make up the top 3. N DNTN's track 'Sa Sa Samoa' by Korallreven (the Elite Gymnastics Remix to be precise) came 2nd with 135 points and 'Run On Love' by Lucas Nord feat. Tove Lo was 3rd for Hendinia with 133 points. It's the second runner-up finish for N DNTN who are yet to win, previously coming 2nd with Autre Ne Veut's 'Counting'.

Trifoski's shock win is definitely the news of the contest but let's spare a thought for the other notable finishes. Kylienips' entry, Thomas Azier's 'Ghostcity', is their biggest for some time finishing 4th (they've entered every contest but never finished higher than 3rd), while Mdiče rattled off a second top 5 in a row, completing the top 5 with Sophie's 'Bipp'.

Terra Avium pulled off a big new peak, finally hitting major success in the contest with a 9th place finish for NO CEREMONY///'s 'FEELSOLOW'. Host nation Caerfyrddia managed another top 10, coming 10th with Brændt Barn's 'Bror', while Cadelicia scored a very respectable 12th place finish with their fifth entry but first to qualify for the final, 'After Dark' by Style Of Eye and Tom Staar. FNT Nickodonia's first final appearance for some 20 contests, Caitlin Rose's 'Menagerie', fared quite poorly, coming 29th of 31, but a return is a return. Botanikka's entry 'Falling In Love' by 2NE1 came last with 27 points.

In Jubirdia news aside from Hendinia and FNT Nickodonia; Aeroche's entry 'Girl Like Me' by Slava came 8th; Aquafina just missed out on another top 10, with Bonnie McKee's 'American Girl' coming 11th; Skall were 16th with Paul Kalkbrenner and Fritz Kalkbrenner's collaboration 'Sky And Sand'; D'yermak'er's Until The Ribbon Breaks underperformed significantly, coming 19th with '2025' despite favourable odds; Bellamia sealed a second top 20, scraping in at 20th with 'Sinners' by Lauren Aquilina; Ramrynia came 22nd with Cady Groves' 'Forget You'; Daehun were 24th with 'Alive' by Namie Amuro; 'The Ocean' by Tonight Alive took Séyetana to 25th.

In the wake of Trifoski's successful self-hype campaign, Persephonia is to launch their own copycat campaign for LVIII which is to be held in Trifoski. Keeps your eyes pealed and prepare for us to win!

#projectDS in full swing

#projectDS has officially entered the semi-final stage as it was revealed two nights ago that Persephonia's new BuzzJack Song Contest entry is American singer Jaymes Young, with fellow American and progressive house producer Kiely Rich's remix of his track 'Dark Star'. As this remix was previously only available in a contest-unfriendly 7 minute epic version, a radio edit was commissioned by the Persephonian BJSC Committee marking the first inter-BJSC-country collaboration for Persephonia, as Batidan producer Hitstastic stepped forward to cut the song down to a much more digestible 4 minutes.

The song will represent Persephonia in the 57th BuzzJack Song Contest, which is being held in Mrkyvka, Trifoski following the country's shock win last contest. It's the first American artist we have sent to the contest since Angel Haze's 'New York' in BJSC XLVII, which failed to reach the final but later came out top in the 'Best of the Rejects XL-L' contest.

Listen to the track below exclusively on Persephonia's SoundCloud:

Self-hype aside the song does look like it has a chance of being a major success for our country, coming joint top of the early contest odds from the usually accurate RontBet, though Persephonian News Bulletin would like to point out to excited Persephonian readers that RontBet have been notoriously inaccurate with some previous Persephonian entries especially in the early stages, initially predicting S O H N's #19 'The Wheel' as second favourite to win while not even considering top 3 finisher 'Out Of Yourself' by Truls as a contender.

Trifoski joins Jubirdia

Though they might currently be a bit more focused on their BJSC hosting priorities, we are proud to announce that Trifoski have become the 14th official member of the Union of Jubirdia. The country has been a close ally of Persephonia for some time. With their recent win the Union now has three contest winners in its ranks (adding to Hendinia and Aeroche, each of whom have 3 or more wins) and a fourth including Skall who retain their long-held observer status in the Union. Hopes are high for another Jubirdia nation to add to that list this contest with Bellamia being amongst the early favourites for the win as well as Persephonia.

Persephonia steps up to moderating responsibilities (temporarily)

It's been rumoured for some time but it can finally be officially confirmed that Persephonia's BJSC Committee is a temporary member of the secretive Moderators for this contest. Caerfyrddia have recently made an official announcement that they will be leaving the Moderators after this contest. Such an announcement has been anticipated for some time, with the temporary Moderator programme running since the start of the year essentially as a job interview for the replacement should there be one.

Persephonia was not initially one of the countries chosen but due to Séyetana dropping out owing to other commitments, Persephonia were offered their slot as the original sixth pick. Altyr Muunilinst and FSR Rontvia are rumoured to no longer be in the running for the official Moderator status which possibly leaves it as a pick between us, Daehun and Bignia-Zaragovina. Whoever is chosen is expected to permanently join the other three moderating nations (the Federal Republic of Ashton, Espen and Numayania) starting from BJSC LVIII.

Jaymes Young brings Persephonia biggest success ever! But nonetheless so close and yet so far...

There's a lot to be positive about this contest in Persephonia. Jaymes Young's 'Dark Star' (remixed by Kiely Rich with some extra snipping commissioned from Hitstastic especially for the contest) has finished in a brilliant 2nd place in the 57th edition of the BuzzJack Song Contest, hosted in Mrkyvka, Trifoski. It's the best positional finish for us, following Truls' 3rd place finish with 'Out Of Yourself' four months ago. It also smashes the Persephonian points record, scoring a whopping 194 points, nearly 25% more than the previous record (156, scored by both the aforementioned Truls and also Spark's 'Revolving' in BJSC XXX).

194 is also the highest total achieved by any entry by a Jubirdia nation in 2013 (beating the 170 points achieved by Aeroche's BJSC LI winner 'Northern Lights' by Kate Boy) and the third highest Jubirdia tally of all time, topped by Hendinia's BJSC XXX victor 'Someone Like You (Live)' by Adele, which scored 225 points and Bignia-Zaragovina's 224-point scoring 4th place with B.o.B's 'Airplanes' (feat. Hayley Williams) in BJSC XXVI. It's the 3rd highest tally achieved by any song this year, trailing BJSC LIII winner 'Look Up' by Carli (representing #00274E) and of course this month's winner...

...so representing some extreme bad timing on Persephonia's part, the stellar performance of 'Dark Star' has gone and collided with the new title holder of biggest entry of 2013, Syndare's entry 'Take Me Home' by Belanger. It took home an astonishing 205 points, the highest total since Fljótavík's XLI winner 'Youth' by Foxes which received 210 points.

Despite the slight disappointment in that timing, we're sure Persephonian citizens will agree we could hardly have lost to a better song - after all Syndare actually received our full score of 12 this contest and it's one of the most popular BJSC entries in Persephonia ever, reaching the top 10 of our official singles chart already. We'll take our personal best with pride and MARCH ON to a potential auto-qualifier in the next contest which shall of course be hosted in Syndare.

editor's note: "diplomatic woo"

editor's note #2: eagle-eyed readers may note Syndare beat us by 11 points and we gave them 12 points. YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

The rest of this month's results

It was a bit of a runaway top 2 this month as 3rd placed 'Little Nikki Says' by Little Nikki (representing the Federal Republic of Ashton) was some way short of 2nd, receiving 158 points. A little way further behind in 4th, with 140 points, was a huge new peak for Jubirdia member Bellamia with 'Something About You' by tyDi featuring Kerli. That song received 10 points from the Persephonian public, so it was close enough to a perfect top 3 (in our opinion). Not quite so perfect was Ilia Darlin's 'We Do What We Like' finishing 5th for #00274E. That makes for an interesting stat as it means #00274E have finished in every position between #1 and #6 exactly once. They've achieved a full top 5 a lot quicker than most if not all of the few other countries that can claim that.

Espen, another Persephonian fave, came 6th with 'Changes' by FAUL feat. Wad Ad, winning a tie with Aquafina who racked up another top 10 in 7th place with Janet Leon's 'New Colours'. Just behind them are another Jubirdia member and frequent top 10 finisher Hendinia with Cyril Hahn's 'Perfect Form' (feat. Shy Girls) in 8th. Skall and Sandebörg closed off the top 10 with Dive In's 'Let Go' and Sirah's 'Inhale' respectively. The latter is only the second top 10 finish for Sandebörg.

Danaelanda and Yehesi both have best finishes of 12th - neither beat that this month but they were both close. The former's entry 'Siren' by Kat Krazy feat. elkka came 13th and the latter were just behind in 14th with Martin Garrix's 'Animals'. Just behind them at 15th was Kathaldazia with their first final appearance in 24 contests (though they were absent entirely for 22 of those), LCNVL and Lakota Silva's 'Closer'.

Sandénia achieved a new peak of 18th with Markus Schulz's 'Tempted' (feat. Sarah Howells), having previously not gone higher than 30th. Three other Jubirdia nations qualified and haven't already been mentioned. Aeroche entry 'One Thing' by Telephoned was 16th, host nation Trifoski's autoqualifier Autoheart came 21st with 'Agoraphobia' and Bignia-Zaragovina came 24th, represented by 'On Our Way' by The Royal Concept.

Two brand new nations qualified on their first attempt but neither did particularly well. The People's Republic of Ginsay Lohands open with a 26th place finish for Beldina's 'What Can I Say' while Florina - a big tip for the future, you heard it here first - were 29th with of Verona's 'Dark In My Imagination'. This month's wooden spoon went predictably to Elëdan with joke entry 'Roo' by Shadeux - if it weren't for Terra Avium sticking to their guns and awarding it 10 points, it would have been the contest's first ever null pointer. Ah well!

Extra info: Jaymes Young first Persephonian semi-final winner

We can now reveal that although he just failed to win the contest overall, Persephonia's entrant Jaymes Young (with the assistance of Kiely Rich and Hitstastic) actually narrowly won semi-final 2 of BJSC LVII, the first ever semi-final win for Persephonia.

'Dark Star' received 137 points in the semi-final, two more than Syndare entry 'Take Me Home' by Belanger which would go on to take the overall win. Only four countries who voted in the second semi-final did not award points to Persephonia - Zechonia, Utopia, Altyr Muunilinst and curiously Mdiče despite them awarding 5 points to the track in the final.

Another minor victory for 'Dark Star' was that it received points from more countries than any other song in the final - 30 of the 48 other voting countries placed the track in their top 10, compared to 28 who did the same for 'Take Me Home'. It has also been revealed that Young's haul of 194 points, despite not being enough to top this contest, is the twelfth highest score in the contest's history aside from the One Big Final format contests which used an inflated scoring system. The only higher score achieved by a non-winner outside One Big Final is Tone Damli's 'Look Back' which finished 2nd with 203 points in BJSC XLI for Ashton.

Persephonia's previous highest position in a semi-final was with Truls' 'Out Of Yourself' which came 3rd in its semi-final. It ended up outperforming both of the songs that beat it in the semi-final and retained 3rd place in the final.

Persephonia's next entry selected

BJSC LVIII, to be held in Syndare, has not yet begun but the Persephonian BJSC committee has already selected the follow-up to 'Dark Star'. It is a return to a much more lo-fi sound for the nation and therefore not expected to come close to the wide appeal and success of 'Dark Star', but there are hopes that our 2nd place finish will mean the track can auto-qualify for the final of LVIII. The song will also be a return to sending UK artists for the first time since Spor's 'Pacifica (Kito & Reija Lee Remix)' in BJSC LII.

Persephonia AQ for the BJSC LVIII final with Gent Mason!

Following our glorious second place finish in Trifoski last month and with a bit of luck from a last minute confirmation by Greenfroze bringing the total number of entries to an even number, Persephonia will not have to go through semi-finals for the first time since the One Big Final era.

British producer and singer Gent Mason will be representing Persephonia this month with his debut release, the plodding lo-fi beaut that is 'Eden'. The Persephonian BJSC Committee is especially delighted at our auto-qualification as we think it's unlikely the song would have made it to the final otherwise. Needless to say we are far from expecting another major hit in the 58th contest which is being held in Syndare (who have also auto-qualified with their hosting entry 'Birthmark' by Cass Lowe).

'Eden' is only the second song to be unleashed by the Aesop record label, following up 'The Wheel' by S O H N, which was also a Persephonian entry to the BuzzJack Song Contest. It came 19th in the fiftieth edition of the contest. This fact is entirely coincidental and only discovered after we had considered sending 'Eden'.

Listen to the song below. You'll be guaranteed to hear it in the grand final.

Gent Mason avoids bottom 7, surpassing domestic expectations

It's a far cry from the heights Persephonia reached last month but our entry to BJSC LVIII, 'Eden' by Gent Mason, has done respectably enough, finishing 25th out of 32 songs in the final (thus just avoiding the dreaded bottom 7). The song received a total of 71 points from 17 different countries, performing best on Ingermanlandia's votes where it was awarded 10 points.

Although it's not a particularly spectacular result this was to be expected as the song was only even in the final due to our success last month meaning we had an autoqualifier this time around. Of course it's possible that we may have qualified anyway but this seems unlikely.

Final results commentary

After last month's clear-cut top 2 it was a return to being anyone's game this month, ultimately ending in a gap of just a single point between the top 2. Just pipping the competition to the win was Fljótavík's entry 'Cry No More' by VAULTS which scored 164 points to become the nation's third winner, after 'Youth' by Foxes and 'Cerahtonia' by Fibes, Oh Fibes! featuring Icona Pop. Taking a second silver medal then is Ramrynia (who are still yet to win) with the favourite to win 'Some Of Us' by Alida, just behind with 163. As Fljótavík are unable to host the next contest, we will be returning to Ramrynia for a second time for BJSC LIX - Ramrynia were lucky enough to be in this situation this time last year as well, coming 2nd behind a winner who was unable to host.

There was another one-point gap between the 3rd and 4th placed songs - two more members of the Jubirdia union. D'yermak'er join the medal table with a new peak and a third top 10 placer, SZA's 'Julia' which finished third with 148 points. Just behind on 147 was Aeroche with 'Breathe This Air' by Jon Hopkins feat. Purity Ring. Unlike the rest of the top 7 songs the Aeroche entry wasn't widely tipped as a winner, though it beat Altyr Muunilinst, N DNTN and Skall who all were predicted by some to win. They line up from 5 to 7 respectively with Arlissa's 'You're Not Alone', Glasser's 'Shape' and Clams Casino's 'I'm God'.

Hendinia had yet another top 10 finish with Smith & Thell's 'Illusion' finishing 8th. Elëdan also added another top 10 finish to their fairly extensive list, coming 10th with BYRTA's 'Andvekur' (editor's note: STILL BITTER). The only nation making the top 10 for the first time is Cadelicia who entered the Matisse & Sadko remix of M-3ox' 'Beating Of My Heart' (feat. Heidrun). The country had a rocky start, opening their BJSC run with four straight DNQs, but have since had three qualifiers in a row and now hit a new peak.

The rest of the Jubirdia union's finishes: Bellamia came close to a second straight top 10, coming 12th with Houseshaker's 'Light The Sky' (feat. Amanda Blush); they just beat Bignia-Zaragovina who came 13th with Oscar Zia's terrible 'Without U'; Séyetana finished in a fairly average 19th with Cardiknox' 'Hold Me Down' despite actually winning the first semi-final, marking an all-time record decline from a semi-final win; Trifoski came 21st for a second month in a row with the RL Grime and Salva remix of 'What A Shame' by Jamie Lidell. Persephonia, as noted above, came 25th.

B.a.N.G returned to the contest again this time. In the past they have failed to vote on time on a number of occasions (the same is true of Persephonia so we can hardly judge) but this time there were no voting issues and their latest comeback entry 'Blazin'' by Torqux feat. Lady Leshurr finished a respectable 14th. There were also less successful return entries in the final for Usfland (24th with Jessica Sutta's 'Again' (feat. Kemal Golden)) and Ingermanlandia (30th with 'Better' by Cat And The Menagerie). The latter only received votes from 8 countries but four of those awarded it 10 or 12. There was a similarly niche entry from the contest's only debuting nation, Euphoriffith, who open with a 15th place for Plezier's 'Plezier Anthem', receiving 4 12s and 2 10s among its ten sets of votes.

The bar has been raised higher than ever for the wooden spoon award after dipping as low as 10 last month (albeit in unusual circumstances). On two previous occasions last place in the final received 53 points. That record is smashed as Caerfyrddia's entry '#Sitterher' by Gabrielle finishes 32nd out of 32 despite receiving 58 points. Also receiving 58 points but 'winning' 31st place on a tiebreak was Isconia's entry, 'I Love You' by San Zhi vs. Woodkid. Isconia have qualified for all but one of this year's contests but almost invariably finished in the bottom 10, with the big exception of The Irrepressibles' 'Two Men In Love' which came 3rd in the year's first contest.

The super secret union that you can't join xox

And at least 'Hunter' went up from the semi! It's just not really my kind of thing, it was NICE and all but not something I find myself wanting to go back to.

The super secret union that you can't join xox

Yeah, what I gotta do to get in this union? I just have separate trading agreements with every nation which just means way more paperwork.

(:P)

So it's a clique consisting of ugly disney princesses?

I don't even wanna be a part of it! Born alone, die alone etc. (:P)

You could always just accept that Synphonia Anschluss so you'd technically be a part of Persephonia! :heehee:

Jubirdia is actually officially admitting another member very soon (probably for the last time in a while). *suspense*

Actually your entry is not that bad on first listen I expected worse with a band name like that, oh well you are stuck in the wrong semi :(
