So Netsky's 'Come Alive' for Usfland.

What do you think of our entry?

Again I feel we have a tough semi-final to qualify from.

Since WHEN did anybody here care about what Pitchfork thought? I'm pretty sure some of you used to bitch about how shit they were anyway?
Which is how I imagined they did it, but why I found it slightly worrying that two different mods in a discussion about vetos related their opinions of a track almost directly to whether or not they were in favour of vetoing it (albeit for different reasons - Tom thinking something didn't need vetoing because it was bad, Phil thinking something did). I'm not saying that it necessarily does mean they're doing it, just that it seems a little strange that they'd mention their opinions of a track when discussing whether or not they should've vetoed it.

I just hunted through the veto thread for my reasoning for ditching Sober and I failed at remembering as I didn't vote to veto it. So my personal feelings didn't come into. Especially as I didn't actually hear it until the semi's started....

It's not about that though, it just kind of illustrates the sort of hype behind this quite well! Look at the sorts of things which unite Popjustice, Scandipop AND Pitchfork - not exactly many could do that and the few who could would probably be near certain winners of a BJSC. It's pretty much every voting constituency hit and many of those in between.

If someone mentions Pitchfork love it I know to stay clear as there is no overlap between what I like and what Pitchfork like.

Pretty sure you managed to spare at least a little time for the likes of Bad Romance and Freak Like Me.

It's pretty hard to find someone who doesn't have time for Bad Romance. Freak is a stone cold classic!

The sheer number of shit pitchfork arse licks that I'd rather stab my ear drums than listen to outweighs the anomalies like Freak and Bad Romance to such an extend the overlap is 0 unless you head to quite a few decimal places.

I'm shattered so lets not get too pedantic here.

God, I go away for a couple of hours and get 6 pages to read :P I've heard these prior to the contest (aside from my own):

Quite a lot, there's quite a few that have been on my shortlists to enter before as well

As for I Love It, I was going to enter it, but it is REALLY cheap I'm afraid so didn't go for it. I don't think it's obvious winner but given all the hype it's hardly inspired. I do think if Faye got veto'd then so should have Icona Pop, but the mods made their decisions and us arguing it won't do anything.

Great to see Shy'm entered, I very nearly entered it myself

guys what's an arcade fire?

Did everyone get out OK?

(omg though HOW can you not know what Pitchfork is?)

Yet it has garnered little reaction from the members of Buzzjack themselves (ie. the ones who VOTE in this contest)? Surely if it has gained the support of all these blogs and is THE NEXT BIG THING then people here would have picked up on it? Twelves replies in a month doesn't necessarily make me run and hit the veto button. Besides, Icona Pop have never been successful in this contest before now. At least with controversially-vetoed acts like Darin he had been known on Buzzjack for a while and had had a good track record in this contest. 'I Love It' might win, because it is a great song, but I used the same process for vetoing and this didn't set alarm bells off in my head. Then there are songs that are vetoed for obvious reasons and people don't 'get' why (Darin keeps coming to mind), so we'll never get it 100% right. There are 51 of us. We're never going to agree on these things. :P

I've googled it since, it turns out it is an indie blog, that's why I have never heard of it!

People DID pick up on it - it did surprisingly well in the Pop forum for something which would otherwise normally go completely ignored had it been any of their other singles! And I'd say the fact a few people have already said they'd considered it but ruled it out almost instantly as they thought it'd be vetoed is a good sign people HAD picked up on it? (Although I'm not going to be as unfair as to suggest that you're at fault for not knowing that, given obviously it wasn't a factor during the vetoing process as people are only just saying they'd considered it now it's been sent)

And the argument about acts being used before and not doing remarkably well - well, look at Marina. A few midtable entries and one fairly successful one before Hollywood, but it was incredibly clear to everyone that Hollywood was an obvious winner as she was backed by near universal online hype and it was overall a far more accessible track than any of the others had been - as is the case with I Love It.

I can forgive it not being vetoed if none of you were genuinely aware of the hype behind I Love It (though surely this is yet another argument for the vetoing process to be widened at least a little more), but I really don't think there's much of a case against it not being an obvious winner now. The only thing I can see stopping it is if there's a proper backlash against it - but even that didn't stop the likes of Hollywood and Silly Boy, and I think if anything obvious winners are more accentuated by having even more contestants.

I really don't think 'I Love It' is an obvious winner at all, and a few others think that too. It's impossible for the mods to get the vetoing right 100% of the time, and they all had their reasons behind why it didn't need to be vetoed.

I think we should just leave it now and if the song did somehow manage to win (which I really hope, but also something which I largely doubt) then it must deserve it?

Does it really matter?

Ramrynia win BJSC. It's not the end of the world if that happens, but if recent contests are anything to go by, the most likely winner hasn't lived up to expectations. 'Give Me That O' and 'Look Back' being the two most recent examples I can think of.

I really don't understand why everyone seems to think that Give Me That O was heralded as some sort of guaranteed obvious winner. It topped a couple of odds at best?

For the record this isn't as bad as the likes of Silly Boy and Hollywood were given it's pretty unlikely it'll be indicative of a trend (the vetoing system, however imperfect, is nonetheless the best system we have had even if I do think it could be improved on). It's just fairly annoying that there's an incredibly obvious winner which is probably known already to a fair load of participants and doesn't really feel like a discovery at all, which isn't something you could say for most of the obvious winners of the past two years.
