Posted August 16, 201212 yr With artist album sales being so low at the moment, some people have suggested re-combining the artist & compilation album charts - but what do you think?
August 16, 201212 yr I'm not really bothered. On one hand the big selling compilations (the Now! albums) could pretty much hold a monopoly of the top reaches, but on the other hand, most other countries have a combined chart so it'd bring up up to date with them. Either way, the sales for most albums will be the same, regardless.
August 16, 201212 yr No, they should always be kept seperate as i feel they are 2 completly different things.
August 16, 201212 yr i think i suggested this in the sales thread, but no i think they should be seperate in the hope that albums see a revival - we can do our own combined chart easily enough anyway!

August 16, 201212 yr I'd rather not, with dire sales right now I'd imagine that we'd have Now in front of most of the time, maybe Clubland etc. as well and artists would be pushed down, getting worse peaks on top of the worse sales. The charts might be a bit dill with few releases and low sales, but I don't see any advantage in combining them.

I couldn't think of anything worse than having a top 5 full of Now and Clubland albums! A separate compilations chart is fine and the low single artist album sales will only last a few more weeks before X Factor and Christmas will start to kick in! Plus, no doubt Emeli will have sales of at least 30k this week!
August 16, 201212 yr Author Exactly this! I couldn't think of anything worse than having a top 5 full of Now and Clubland albums! That 's one of the main thinks us chart veterans have against the idea - we remember when the album charts *were* like that. :(
August 16, 201212 yr I think they should be combined. They are still an album at the end of the day, albeit including songs by various artists.
August 16, 201212 yr That 's one of the main thinks us chart veterans have against the idea - we remember when the album charts *were* like that. :( As a 'chart veteran' I would like to see them combined. An album is an album as long as it satisfies the criteria for length/price, if it does then it should be included. It seems completely artificial to make a distinction along the lines of whether one or many artists happen to be featured on the included tracks. If there are a lot of compliations at the top of the chart, well too bad. That's what's selling. The charts primary function isn't to be exciting to follow, it is to accurately track what is selling.
August 16, 201212 yr Yes. I have always said an Album is an Album. It's easy to see, who the top artist are in a combined chart, but not easy to see, what the top selling overall album is. Though it's sacrilege that no one, ever gets to see the complete combined chart anymore. If both were readily available, it wouldn't be so damn, annoying.

I did contact the OCC to see if they could publish the chart on their website but got no reply. However someone else did contact them and they have said they will consider publishing the overall chart. Hopefully they will do this.
August 16, 201212 yr I think to get a reply, you have to be in with a clique, as I too wrote to them & never got any reply. No matter regularly atteding the annual Music Week Xmas do!

August 17, 201212 yr This would explain much! ;) What's his name?Martin Talbot, the Managing Director of the Official Chart Company. He was the Editor of Music Week until a few years ago. They all seem to like southern football teams, even Alan Jones does, he's a Wolves supporter. No-one seems to support the northern lot - a good Geordie wouldn't go amiss ;) Nowt wrong with a Newcastle supporter...

August 17, 201212 yr Midlands! Noddy Holder land. Always found Wolverhampton, quite a good place to stop on the way to the ATV Studios. Alan is originally Welsh, though. Never met Mr Talbot. He must have kept a low profile in a secluded niche, at MW! Edited August 17, 201212 yr by davetaylor
