UK garage, diamantes and Dane Bowers: Why Posh Spice’s short-lived solo pop career deserves a second chance

Victoria Beckham was written off as a solo artist before she’d really begun but a mysterious lost album that exists only on YouTube hints at the one-woman supernova she could have become. Adam White wonders whether her brief Y2K releases have been unfairly dismissed

Haven't read this in full yet, but very nice for there to be an article that reappraises Victoria as a solo artist. She got such a hard time for even daring to release music, and then made fun of for missing #1 - in a way I don't think many other artists have experienced. The media wanted her to fail and it clearly led to her falling out of love with being in the music industry, even though she persisted for quite a while. Based on the material she worked on around 2003, her second album was shaping up to be great!

I read this earlier and have to agree with most of it. She was really slandered at large, which is a shame. Good for her to stick to it for a bit against all odds.

It was ridiculous the shit people were saying about her not making it to #1 with Out of Your Mind. Then her solo album launch was really great quality but people had pretty much decided they were not going to give her a chance at all.

I still think that her solo album had great music. Like That, Not That Kind of Girl, I Wish, No Trix, No Games, Girlfriend were all great, great songs. Would have loved it if she had done those as singles or at least a couple of performances.

Will always remember when I met her during her Telstar era

I think she had potential with her first album but for me launched with a really weak song. The album had much better tracks to launch with than Not Such An Innocent Girl. The Kylie battle really did her no favours either, then to follow up almost half a year later with A Mind of its Own (I do like it) as single 2 was just crazy tactics. The first era was so badly handled.

Then she went down the whole Hip hop/Damon Dash route which absolutely did not work for her at all and was always going to create negative reaction from the media.

Everything finally amounted to one double A side single with two very contrasting song choices that made her look even more unsure of what direction she was going in. It was all so messy.

Ahhh I'm jealous! What a great photo, and cool for you to have met her during that era (funnily enough I seem to remember seeing this picture back in the days of DenDen  )

I think Like That and I Wish in particular had great potential as singles, so it's a pity neither Virgin or Victoria seemed to recognise that (well to be fair they eventually did with I Wish, but for some reason decided to make a worse version of it lol. I don't regret that she ended up cancelling it.)

Definitely agree that her first album era had mistakes and bad timing as a running theme, which was unfortunate. I don't mind Not Such an Innocent Girl but it wasn't a great choice of first single. Going up against Kylie certainly got a lot of press, but ultimately led to make the single look disastrous by not even running Kylie close.

Interesting point of view about the Double A Side single, I suppose that could have come across to some of the public that she lacked confidence with either direction. I wonder which song was ultimately the one that drove the most sales. Radio were marginally more supportive of This Groove, and an unofficial upload of the video has a few thousand more views than Let Your Head Go. Personally I preferred Let Your Head Go, but I think both were good songs. I get the impression that Victoria herself preferred This Groove and the material that was a part of the "Come Together" leaks.

The biggest issue with Victoria's career was that a lot of money was invested into it, money that they wouldn't even have gotten back even if she had been hugely successful. I'm pretty sure she would've had to sell Northern Star numbers to get money back on VB and probably huge numbers for the Telstar album too considering the wealth of material she recorded.

Love this photo!

It's a shame she never got to release her second album, would have been interesting to see what she came up with and whether it had a bigger impact than the first one. Based on the success of LYHG / TG (relative to the time of release) I'd say she could have looked at Emma's Free Me type success with the right promotion etc. But then that would have been painted as a flop for her too.

This is actually kind of ok

Not sure what I think about the fact Victoria has recorded spoken vocals for the beginning of the track... she can't do a photoshoot with the girls because she doesn't want to be associated with music due to her Fashion label, yet she is more than happy to record vocals for a song for some random (to her) artist?

No that's a sample from her 73 Questions with Vogue video from a few years ago!

Ah, that's not such an insult then

I'm hoping this hits #1 all over the world then we can say Victoria has a solo #1 too

Isn't Iggy a horrible person? I'd rather not be associated with her if I was Victoria.

She is. The Queen of cultural appropriation

I have no idea who she is tbh? Did she do that song with Britney and stick up for her??

Yeah Iggy is trash, unfortunately. She has a couple of bops though, and this one is one of them!
Btw, that “I have a responsibility towards the fashion community” is BS. It’s something Simon told her to say, that persona they created for her really irks me. I like her more now, she seems more natural and in peace with her fun side. Spice World The Movie was basically Victoria and her friends. The best jokes and moments are Posh Spice related.
