September 17, 201214 yr I wouldn't say The Script are massively popular with young people. But they do get support on Capital and Radio 1, which are the best radio stations if you want to be high in the singles chart. I think if The xx where getting played on Capital they'd probably do well in the singles chart too. I think they could be popular with the single-buying public if radio gave them a chance. I mean, Rihanna has sampled two of their songs I think.
September 17, 201214 yr They arent really capital style music though hence why they wont get playlisted there - not commercial sounding like the script!
September 17, 201214 yr Author I don't think the Script/xx thing says anything about age groups really, it just shows that A) 'Hall Of Fame' has has a lot more exposure than 'Angels', B) The xx have a bigger fanbase than The Script and C) there was more hype for 'Coexist' than '#3' (which is hardly surprising considering 'Coexist' is the follow-up to a massively critically lauded sleeper hit album while '#3' is just a bog-standard new release). 'Hall Of Fame' sounds a lot more geared to singles chart success while 'Angels' doesn't sound like a hit but does sound like it'd shift a lot of albums. Also consider that 'Angels' has been available for nearly two months as a pre-order bonus for 'Coexist' so quite a lot of The xx's fans will have already 'bought' 'Angels' before this week and those sales just didn't count to the chart; it probably would have gone top 40 in its first week had it been eligible for the chart.
September 17, 201214 yr Thats a good point about the OA/OS aspect but surely as Eric says its about the narrow radio airplay there is in the uk at the minute - if angels had been played as much on capital as on radio 1 it would have done even better.
September 17, 201214 yr I wouldn't say The Script are massively popular with young people. They are with people who play the guitar - lot's of people at my school who play guitar listen and play The Script, especially The Man Who Can't Be Moved.
