I read the debate transcript on the train back from Birmingham and the fact that people support this f***ing moron disgusts me. He's worse than Farage and he's a less homicidal but just as damaging socially if not more hitler.

And it is disgusting some Americans are being so dumb as to let him get away with being so Hitlerwy with his propaganda!! At least when Hitler lied and promised different things and backtracked in different areas there was no mass media to call him out. Everyone KNOWS!!!! Trump STARTED and was the fookin FACE and used his Conservative media power to blast its racist message CONTINOULSY!!! behind the Birther movement. Why ler him Hitler his way out of it?

Watched about 90 minutes of the debate. It felt like a Clinton victory. She and the moderator hammered him on releasing his tax returns and his support of birtherism in particular, although he seemed to get the upper hand when talking about trade deals. Whether the debate will make a substantial difference to the polling numbers remains to be seen, I'll be interested to see which soundbites from the debate begin circulating in the next few days (I could't pick any out, although I was quite tired by the time I switched out).

Agreed, she seemed to remain calm against his gale force bull shit. I'm a little happier after that debate but will be even more so when I see the polls surge in her favour.

So this DID end up being the most watched debate ever, 84.4 million, almost 4 million more than Carter/Reagan.

Substantively I felt it was a lot better than I had expected, I think she did a very good job of goading him without coming off aggressive or too condescending. She also felt a lot more 'human' than I expected too, which is still a ludicrous criticism of her, but the smiling/laughing and that shoulder shimmy thing all helped. I'm not sure if any of that really MATTERS though, I think it's accepted by anyone with sense that she did win (and I am surprised she did, but pleased of course), but whether the polls move MUCH will be interesting. If the true equilibrium of the race is the 5 point average then this could reset it to that, but I'm not sure if simply being better than him will be enough to drag those Johnson/Stein voters back in high enough numbers.

That or I'm just too pessimistic for my own good.

Yeh Clinton was the clear winner here. Trump seemed to make it up as he went!

Even the body language at the end - Hilary and Bill staying the shaking hands whereas Trump and co stood back on stage before walking slowly away!

The consensus seems to be that Clinton remained poised and articulate. Trump was very condescending with his tone and body language, and went off on weird tangents like Rosie O'Donnell, his 10 year-old son being really good with computers, 400-pound hackers, lack of nuance on foreign policy, and spewing out names most people have never heard of. I'm hoping Clinton gets some sort of boost out of this, but obviously its not going to change the minds of people who are already strongly in favor of either candidate. There are still two more debates, and Trump will even try to go more scorched earth on Clinton. I don't know if he'll do well in a town-hall setting though. Also, his double-doubling down on criticizing the former Miss Universe on gaining weight was incredibly stupid.

An irrelevant aside: I really, really dislike Kellyanne Conway.

She's bad at spinning things, but I guess there's only so much she can do to prop up a candidate like Trump. Her "secret Trump voters, that are too embarrassed to admit to pollsters that they're voting for Trump" was hilarious, when she said it when Trump was far behind in the polls. There's no evidence that people lie to pollsters about who they support. Republicans said the polls were going to be wrong in 2008 and 2012, because many white people didn't want to appear racist to pollsters for not supporting Obama, but Obama actually outdid the polling average the past two elections.

I do think there may be a potential shy Trump effect in the polls though, given how uniquely shameful it is to be voting for a literal white supremacist.

If anyone is getting a poll surge after the debate, it's now looking like it's Trump that has achieved that. He has all the momentum atm thank God.

"thank God"?

More likely to be God's fallen angel given his lack of compassion for people - don't recall Christianity preaching kicking out Mexicans and Muslims.....

So you don't believe in illegal immigration then?

That may have rung true for 'ordinary' candidates like McCain and Romney, but that is a very real worry here I think. There wasn't really any level of social stigma attached to publicly backing either of those candidates, because aside from being Republicans, they were standard politicians not really coming up with any truly HEINOUS plans for the country. With Trump and his white supremacy, misogynistic, hate filled tirades against almost every minority group out there there are many reasons not to want to telegraph your vote. Until he wins, that is.

i feel like that goes against what i've seen of trump supporters, both online and irl, though. they're a passionate bunch, and the things that common sense ( :basil: ) would deem shameful about him are the things that they're vocal about loving. the difference is that, unless they're literally KKK members or neo-nazis, they've somehow convinced themselves that he somehow doesn't represent these dangerous ideologies that *should* be taboo in the 21st f***ing century. or that said ideologies aren't all that dangerous. idk. (who really f***ing knows what goes on in the minds of trump supporters tbh. well i guess a couple of you do, for whatever reason.)

or i guess it depends on where you are. to use my state (pennsylvania) as an example, if you're in suburban philadelphia then yeah you might not want to prattle on about trump to everyone you meet. but if you're in a 98% white town in east f***sville county in the middle of pennsyltucky, then the things he's been saying were already par for the course and there's never been much social stigma in the first place. like i'm sure these Secret Trump Voters are out there, i just don't think there are legions of them waiting to upturn the election. and if anything i think maybe the rising poll figures are those shy supporters finally rationalizing their support to themselves and coming out. who knows though, i guess it's hard to gauge these things.

Trump is quoted as saying he would use nuclear devices in the middle east. Screws poor people he hires. Wants to imprison all muslims.

A real god fearing christian then.

And as for kicking out illegal immigrants totally depends on the individual case i dont see 8 million people as a uniform lump to be rounded up and put in concentration camps like his totally proven idol adolph. Ask his ex wife and trump himself. Never denied it.

Where are you getting that notion exactly? The only pollster that has released a poll since the debate is Morning Consult and it has Clinton +3, their previous poll was Trump +1, and this new poll wasn't even conducted entirely after the debate.

LOL. What facebook meme served you that completely incorrect information? Did you WATCH the debate? Even FOX NEWS said Clinton ON won the debate. Which in Fox News language means, holy shit our party candidate is dumb AF.

And those are the same people that loved Sarah Palin. Just to give some added perspective (which u are very much lacking)

Also lols all around at that your new username. If ONLY YOU were born in a less progressive era. Salem witch trials aesthetic.

That's interesting. Hopefully it will have peaked by now and the shy vote won't provide a scare in November.
