Here's the first of two mini threads for you before the year end, a rather light hearted look at some of the least successful "follow up" singles over the course of the last 22 years. So to the criteria......

1) These will be the follow up singles to Number one hits only.

2) The single must not have reached the top 20

3) The years covered will be 1990-2012

4) Since roughly 2008 the concept of "follow up" has been rather blurred so I've had to make a judgement call- I might be wrong and if so I apologise- I tried my best!

5) Only the main artist in any "featured" collabration will be counted in terms of where their "follow up" charted, i.e main credit to main credit.

You are of course asked to contribute your own thoughts on the tracks and why they "flopped" or perhaps you don't even think they flopped at all, or what OUGHT to have been released instead, anyway 95 examples are coming up of how NOT To follow up a No 1 (take a note Gotye)- I hope you enjoy.

Is this going to be a proper countdown or a random list of examples?

Great idea for a thread! :D

2) The single must not have reached the top 20

Are you counting songs which didn't even chart in the Top 200? I know it sounds daft, but you know.. :P

They will all be counted as long as it features as an official follow up, but as I state after 2008 this becomes slightly contestable.

CHARLIE BROWN- COLDPLAY

PEAKED: 22

SALES: 144K

FOLLOW UP TO: PARADISE

So to our "least floppiest flop" and poor old Coldplay- singles were never really their forte and they appear twice on this rundown- first up is “Charlie Brown” the official follow up to “Paradise” but couldn’t replicate that success. Evidently all they needed was to rope in Rihanna and normal top 10 service was resumed Was it the wrong choice of single? Written originally with a reference to the Snoopy character in it, the lyric was removed but the band couldn’t think of another name for the song so they kept this one.

CHAMPAGNE SHOWERS- LMFAO

PEAK POSITION: 32

SALES: 101K

FOLLOW UP TO: PARTY ROCK ANTHEM

Proving that autotune can’t salvage everything! Moving on from “28 days later” to “Blade” for video inspiration perhaps this was case of same idea taken too far, mind you you could say that about “Sexy And I Know It” but that at least has some kind of comedic value (only the first time you see the video obviously). Anyway whatever happened it wasn’t entirely a success.

RAIN OVER ME- PITBULL

PEAK POSITION: 28

SALES: 83K

FOLLOW UP TO: GIVE ME EVERYTHING

With some collaboration Ho’s it’s a bit difficult to tell exactly what a “follow” up release is, fortunately for me Pitbull made it easy in 2011 with this “contribution”. With help from ex- Mr Jennifer Lopez this only just made the top 30, it’s your typical Pitbull fair, even the magic of Red One here can’t improve its fortunes though his ability to appear on every third track in the chart remains undiminished.

Poor LMFAO :( Champagne Showers and Sorry For Party Rocking deserved to be massive top 5 hits rather than massive flops! Of course they're not as good as PRA and SAIKI but I was really into them at the time.

And with Coldplay they obviously released that single so that they could wait for Paradise to die down before releasing the obvious smash-hit Princess Of China.

I'm loving this thread!

I hate Charlie Brown, I'm a massive fan of Coldplay and that's one of their worst songs ever. :puke2:

Great countdown, a lot of recent songs so far though! :o

It wouldn't have been as bad if Coldplay's Charlie Brown had actually stuck around following its exit from the Top 40 (I was shocked to see it fall 33-47-OUT). Watching them perform Charlie Brown live on X Factor Final was epic!

I quite liked LMFAO's Champagne Showers, nowhere near as good as Party Rock Anthem, but I still enjoyed it. Unlike Coldplay, they managed to stick around outside the Top 40 (6 weeks between #41-#50).

Only really enjoy Marc Anthony's vocals on Rain Over Me (well, it is usually the guest artist who makes the song what it is! :P).

I'm sure all these songs were reduced to 59p in order to reach their peaks! :P

Random aside: There is NO WAY that Pitbull is 31. I'm betting on 40 at the very least.

I would have thought 40s too! :o

I've always said that, a few years ago I said he's got to be at least 45.

No way on earth is he 31.

I don't care how old he is, I still would. embarrassing crush much?

One of my friends at school said she would too! He's got to be the most unattractive man that people still seem to fancy ever!

Well my taste in men has never been that good :P Pitbull fits right in.

The unfortunate thing is that a lot of these are going to be better songs than their more successful follow-up. I don't mind "Rain Over Me" while "International Love" is awful (although neither do anything to disprove the idea that the rather enjoyable "Give Me Everything" was a complete fluke), although not in the case of "Champagne Showers". Both "Charlie Brown" and "Princess of China" pale in comparison to "Hurts Like Heaven" anyway.
Great thread, Can't wait to see how well No Other One by Taio Cruz does, that was an AWFUL flop
I thought it was interesting how 'International Love' became a big hit in the UK even though 'Rain Over Me' flopped. Both are pretty similar.
