November 19, 201212 yr What a terrible, dare I say it muso-snobby, list. Guess that makes it easy what NOT to do on New Years Day!
November 19, 201212 yr I think In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins should be on this list (unless I've missed it or it didn't peak at #2 ).
November 20, 201212 yr Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You has the best memories for me out of the songs on the list.
November 20, 201212 yr I can't really decide what I'd go for, but it would probably be one of Right Here Right Now, Milkshake or Feel Good. I wonder if we'll get a last minute addition of Something New?
November 20, 201212 yr God Save The Queen and Happy Xmas (War Is Over) were both number 1's in my book (and also in the OCC's books if they ever dared admit it) so it would be somewhat ironic if either of those two won the vote. I'd choose Hound Dog, Downtown, Oliver's Army, Vienna, Common People and Murder On The Dancefloor from their list if I had to pick one from each decade. But many of my favourite number two's are not on their lists. And I notice instrumentals are criminally under-represented. We have had many classic instrumental number two's over the years. Where are Theme From A Summer Place, Stranger On The Shore, Albatross, Fanfare For The Common Man, Magic Fly, The Floral Dance, Axel F, Crockett's Theme, French Kiss, Children, etc ?
November 20, 201212 yr Torn not there? :( I'm disappointed 'White Flag' isnt there. that was only beaten by the biggest selling song of that year.... There should be an option to vote for one (or more) song(s) that they've omitted from their lists.
November 20, 201212 yr What a great idea by the OCC for a change - so many great no2s and especially since theyll be awarded no1 status. I could chose so many but Let it Be by The Beatles is like a hymn now its so embedded in culture, Sex Pistols and John Lennon were actually no1s and Last Christmas was the biggest selling no2 ever, wasn't it? Also Mariah and The Pogues are basically what christmas is all about nowadays so they are embedded culturally in peoples minds as no1 records. I remember telling my family last xmas that the Pogues were beaten to no1 by the Pet Shop Boys and they wouldn't believe me until i showed them on buzzjack lol!!
November 20, 201212 yr Thank god this is on radio 2 so none of the kids vote for a song from the past 10 years (none of which are worthy imo!!)
November 20, 201212 yr Or even the last two years - if Love the Way You Lie, Rolling In The Deep or Moves Like Jagger win I might actually cry. :P
November 20, 201212 yr I'm so pleased Girls Aloud are in there! I voted for "Love Machine" (naturally), but I'm a bit annoyed that "Whenever Wherever" isn't there :(
November 20, 201212 yr I love Ray of Light and Kids in America. Really torn as to which of the two to vote for. There are four Aloud singles that hit number 2 (No Good Advice, Jump, The Show & Love Machine) and I'm not a massive fan of any of them. I think I prefer ROL and KIA over them. Hmmm, decisions. November 20, 201212 yr COMMON PEOPLE - PULP ALRIGHT/TIME - SUPERGRASS ROLL WITH IT - OASIS WONDERWALL - OASIS A DESIGN FOR LIFE - MANIC STREET PREACHERS BORN SLIPPY (REMIX) - UNDERWORLD SONG 2 - BLUR BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY - VERVE RAY OF LIGHT - MADONNA MUSIC SOUNDS BETTER WITH YOU - STARDUST RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW - FATBOY SLIM what a list of great number 2s!!!!
November 20, 201212 yr A little upset that Kate Nash's "Foundations" isn't there - especially given that it had 5 weeks at #2, and once missed out by just 16 copies. I would pick Deee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart" as that was the closest, missing out by just 8 copies. Also Pulp's "Common People" which missed out because of Simon Cowell (it had massive sales but Robson and F**king Jerome were at the top with their dull cover of "Unchained Melody" which is wheeled out by Simon once every 5 or 6 years).
November 20, 201212 yr I voted for Downtown by Petula Clark. No Smurf Song. I'll say the winner could be Vienna or maybe even Wonderwall. Edited November 20, 201212 yr by Common Sense
November 20, 201212 yr There's certain singles that should be there - any million sellers should be there, singles that spend 4 or more weeks at number 2, singles that missed out on number 1 by a few hundred copies, singles that were markedly superior to the single that was number 1 - especially if said number 1 single was a novelty song, controversial ones like Groove is in the Heart and God Save the Queen. I agree up to the part about 'markedly superior' which is not something that can be measured in objective terms.

I agree with you! Foundations is one of my favourite songs of all time as well, so I'm disappointed that it's not on the list. :( And your reasons for voting Common People were the reasons I would have given if I voted for it - and I would have voted for it as a 'lost #1', but I picked Fairytale Of New York as my favourite song instead!
