BLINDINGLY obvious to anyone with at least half a brain

You know my opinions on this Taytay era, although I do love Begin Again.

  • Author

Even if there's less half a brain I'd imagine you could take a guess :P

Begin Again is one of the weakest :( But I still love it

OK, here we go with the singles. Blocks of 10 from 100-40, blocks of 5 from 40-21, blocks of 2 from 20-11 andthe top 10 individually. That's the plan anyhow :P Just a forewarning, it'll be an odd and unpredictable countdown! A few top 5/top 10 hits will be lower than some songs that peaked at like #23 probably  Before 100-91 are revealed, here are a few unlucky songs which just missed out:

Aaliyah ft. Drake - Enough Said

Agnes - One Last Time

Alicia Keys ft. Nicki Minaj - Girl On Fire

Delta Goodrem - Wish You Were Here

Girls Aloud - Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me

Glee Cast - 3

Grimes - Oblivion

Justin Bieber - Boyfriend

Little Big Town - Tornado

Madonna - Girl Gone Wild

Namie Amuro - Tokyo (In The Spotlight)

Nicki Minaj - Freedom

Nina Zilli - Out Of Love (L'amore e feminina)

Owl City ft. Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time

SamSaya - Apple

StooShe ft. Travie McCoy - Love Me

Thorunn Antonia - So High

Wonder Girls ft. Akon - Like Money

Usher - Scream

100

Chart run: (57-68-xx-9-6-10-22-25-35-42-45-57-68)

UK peak: 13

From the album: A Million Lights

Kicking things off is the breezy, summery second single from Chezza's third album A Million Lights. Not as strong some of her previous singles, but it managed a respectable peak (albeit with a fairly quick fall ).

99

Chart run: (8-16-20-25-29-45-57)

UK peak: N/A

From the album: TBA

The first of many BJSC entries in this countdown, this was entered by Unovia (myself) in June's 45th contest. It failed to qualify, coming 22nd in its semi final, but peaked at 8 in my chart and although it fell quickly, it remains a lovely little quirky ballad.

98

Chart run: (13-9-10-13-17-25-39-47-46-49-57-64-73)

UK peak: #15

From the album: Heaven - Super Deluxe Edition

Rebecca was my favourite throughout the 2010 series of X-Factor (which with Cher, Matt, Aiden and Treyc was a very strong year) and she didn't disappoint musically either. The jazzy and soulful Heaven was one of my favourite albums of 2012 and this was the first single from the re-release, peaking at #15 in the UK following an X-Factor performance. Musically it's typical Rebecca, very soulful and jazzy.

97 2NE1 - Scream

Chart run: (27-39-43-59-59)

UK peak: DNC (#14 in Japan)

From the album: Collection

2NE1 are by far my favourite K-Pop act, and this is the first of two entries for them here. Admittedly this is far from their best, but it still a great electro-pop song with attitude. Their Japanese material (well, by and large Japanese translations of their Korean hits!) does seem very lacking in comparison to their Korean material though in general.

96

Chart run: (48-58-xx-36-47-45-59-66)

UK peak: DNC (#11 in Germany)

From the album: Grace

I was very sad when Monrose split, but with Mandy's solo stuff coming quickly I had something Monrose related to keep me happy. This was her first solo single, a great, though admittedly generic, electro-pop track a bit not to different to a Monrose track. She could've gone down a more inspired route, but this was pleasing for a debut.

95

Chart run: (3-6-13-16-23-30-44-64-73)

UK peak: #3

From the album: single only

#95 may seem a very low EOY placing for a #3 peaking song, but I did say it'd be a weird countdown :P The theme to the most overrated film of 2012 (haven't even seen it, but I hate James Bond anyway), is itself quite overrated! It's obviously very good, or it wouldn't be here, but it's no Set Fire To The Rain, Rolling In The Deep, Someone Like You or Hometown Glory. Very typical Bond Theme, classy vocals and all.

94

Chart run: (50-3-3-8-15-20-34-44-45-51-65-75-xx-58-38-45-57)

UK peak: DNC (#2 in Norway)

From the album: single only

This Arabian flavoured electo stomper was Norway's flop entry to Eurovision 2012 (it came last in the final, and only just scraped through in the first place!) made a considerable dent on my chart. Like Adele, it's peak should suggest a better placing here (and the chart run was very good) but alas it hasn't held up as well in my affections as 93 other songs this year :P

93

Chart run: (2pl-xx-34-28-21-4-14-26-35-45-56)

UK peak: #2

From the album: The Game

A surprise January hit, this took a while to translate to the UK. It first registered with me mid-2011 upon its Canadian release and, as the chart run shows, made my 'playlist' (a now defunct extension of my then top 40) for 2 weeks. Fast forward to February 2012, and this Heart sampling pop/R&B track peaked at 4 and spent 7 weeks in my top 40.

92

Chart run: (4-7-12-15-28-47-52-60-66-73)

UK peak: DNC (#23 in Canada)

From the album: Kiss

After the worldwide mega smash Call Me Maybe took over everywhere, Carly had a challenge on her hands to live up to it. And while this follow-up single was chirpy disco infused teen-pop much like its predecessor, it flopped pretty much everywhere...

91

Chart run: (21-21-19-23-25-32-39-29-34-43-53-69-75)

UK peak: #13

From the album: In Case You Didn't Know

The sexiest man alive seems to dash through albums at a Rihanna pace, this was the 3rd and final single from his doube platinum selling second album In Case You Didn't Know. Following 2 number 1s, this typically Olly track it didn't do as well as previous singles but it still peaked at #13 in the UK.

13 Loreen - Heal (average 8.04)

Top 5:

03 If She's The One

*.*

'If She's The One' is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. So happy to see it inside someone else's top 5 of the album!

Aww, it's a shame that Oblivion just missed out on a Top 100 position. :( Is there any chance that Genesis will chart in the Top 90? :D
It would be near last for me on BTD

90

Chart run: (14-14-30-28-18-17-19-31-45-67)

UK peak: #16

From the album: Fall To Grace (Deluxe)

'Two worlds colliding, and they could never tear us apart'

This was a non-album single from Paloma (although later included on a re-release of Fall To Grace), for a John Lewis advert. A cover of the 1988 INXS track, this soulful soft rock ballad is Paloma at her best, vocally smooth and powerful.

89

Chart run: (2-6-10-15-21-25-32-37-49-45-44-48)*still charting

UK peak: #7

From the album: Warrior

'I hear your heart beat, to the beat of the drums, oh what a shame that you came here with someone'

After the Animal/Cannibal era was so amazing and so success, Ke$ha had a lot to live up to with the Warrior era. This, the first single, is a poptastic party anthem with a youthful message. Not one of her best, but a solid hit nonetheless. I don't think it should have quite peaked at #2 for me either :P

88

Chart run: (5-3-6-18-22-34-44-53-43-38-50-45-33-36-36-39-43-53-65-72)

UK peak: #8

From the album: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

'Yo what I gotta do to show these girls that I own 'em? Some call me Nicki and some call me Ronan'

A very low EOY placing for a fairly long runner! This was the second generic dance-pop single fom Nicki in a row (the first is yet to come here), a house influenced club banger with fierce raps plus a sung chorus. Not as big as Starships worldwide nor in my chart.

87

Chart run: (8-10-19-31-21-3-7-18-26-42-61)

UK peak: #1

From the album: Teenage Dream - The Complete Confection

'Throw your sticks and your stones, throw your bombs and your blows but you're not gonna take my soul'

With what is by far her weakest single, Katy still makes a respectable showing with her 4th UK number 1. The lead single from the re-release of the already milked dry (yet utterly amazing) Teenage Dream is a typically Katy fusion of dance-pop and pop/rock, released in the aftermath of her divorce from Russell Brand and although recorded over a year beforehand reflects the situation perfectly!

86

Chart run: (55-60-xx-43-41-42-19-19-25-30-45-54-68-64-34-10-11-29-42-55-70)

UK peak: DNC (#1 in Denmark)

From the album: single only

'Should've known better, now I miss you like Sahara missed the rain'

The 2nd Eurovision entry thus far, this time Denmark's Soluna Samay. This was predicted big things from pretty much the start, but ultimately came a lowly 23rd of 26 in the final, with only 21 points. I don't if it was too pedestrian, given that songs like When The Music Dies and Standing Still did well, but admittedly it's very Radio 2/less exciting KT Tunstall. Lovely little track though.

85 Serebro - Mama Lover

Chart run: (10-17-31-48-54-66-70)

UK peak: DNC (#1 in Russia)

From the album: Mama Lover

'Yeah I'm melting like candy, can you take me high?'

Another BJSC entry now, this time from Farahtyn (Martyn). This Russian girlgroup will be known to most for Song #1, Russia's 2007 Eurovision entry, and this bonkers disco-pop track has been a sizeable international hit for them, crossing over to Spain and Italy. The lyrics might make less than absolutely no sense, but it's still a great, catchy, danceable pop track that wouldn't have sounded out of place on Girls Aloud's Tangled Up.

84

Chart run: (71-xx-18-19-21-20-24-32-36-50-61)

UK peak: DNC (#3 in Finland)

From the album: III

'Isä olen täällä maailman toisella puolen'

BJSC again, this time FSR Rontvia's (gooddelta) entry to BJSC XLV in June. Released in 2011, this Finnish pop/rock track only came to my attention with its entry in the contest, but I'm glad Rich entered it because it's such a chirpy lovely little track!

83 PSY - Gangnam Style

Chart run: (69-46-22-10-2-5-3-4-7-10-16-25-31-41-50-60)

UK peak: #1

From the album: PSY 6 (Six Rules) Part 1

'Areumdawo sarangseureowo, Keurae neo hey keurae baro neo hey'

This really needs no explaination  If you haven't been living under a rock (in fact, even if you have you'll have heard it!) then you'll know all about this K-Pop mega smash. To be honest, the novelty has long since worn thin with me, I'm grateful it got K-Pop noticed a bit but I fear it'll be the one novelty K-Pop hit and 2NE1, HyunA, Girls Generation etc. won't break through :( As fun and catchy as the song is, even I wish it would go away now

82

Chart run: (6-10-11-16-19-28-32-44-42-54-73)

UK peak: #7

From the album: Glassheart

'I told you never to get used to me, I still wake when you fall asleep'

Following the '''''flop'''''' (oh god, #4 what a career finisher!) of Collide, Leona's 3rd album was postponed a year. And it was this dark, troubled (pun slightly intended) R&B track that led the eventual release. Something different for Leona, this pleased fans and non fans alike. However the general public didn't take to it as much, giving it a #7 peak and only a few weeks top 40. All this plus Glassheart has sold less since release than Spirit did in its first day! Oh dear Leona.

81

Chart run: (7-9-19-17-20-21-27-32-48-55)

UK peak: DNC (#2 in France)

From the album: Caméléon

'Et alors ! Mais qu'est-ce que ça te fait, si je n'aime pas les protocoles, les idées fixes, les copier-coller ?'

Another BJSC entry from June's 45th contest! This time it's French popstar Shy'm with the lead single from her 4th album, which represented Umiiruka (Umi). I've loved Shy'm for a couple of years now, so it was good to see this brilliant slice of French dance-pop get wider recognition, having been entered just as it was released in France.

Wow, didn't expect to see Haloo Helsinki! here, great song  Excellent albums round up too, most of your favourites feature in my EOY top 40!
Collide remains the best Leona song :smoke:

^ Oh dear.

And yep it had to feature Rich, it's a lovely little song as I said

UK peak: #32

From the album: Born To Die - Paradise Edition

'I'm tired of feeling like I'm fucking crazy'

Lana's first of 3 entries here, the other two are much higher! Although this is a great, melancholy song, much in the vein of her other work, I feel like this pales a bit in comparison. Wonderful video though

79

Chart run: (48-35-40-26-10-15-19-27-33-36-45-51-55)

UK peak: N/A (#1 in Korea)

From the album: Girls Generation II ~Girls & Peace~

'Kocchi mite baby denwa shitari ring ring'

Another dose of K-Pop, this time from Girls Generation. Another BJSC entry, this came not too far from being the first K-Pop winner when entered by Daehun (Oricon) in the 46th contest. With dancey pop production and catchy melodies, this is a shining example of great Korean pop!

78

Chart run: (33-8-1-4-7-8-13-21-31-41-42-53-59-67-72)

UK peak: DNC (#1 in Australia)

From the album: Armageddon

'I wish I couldn't feel 'cause it hurts so much'

The lowest placed #1 on this countdown (excluding the three Glee #1s which were discounted)! Guy Sebastian has been huge for nearly 10 years in Australia, and this was another #1 for him there, and this Lupe assisted R&B track vaulted to the top of my charts for a week too. It was my entry to BJSC in the 48th contest, and qualified for the final but only came 21st(?).

77

Chart run: (29-26-33-32-20-15-22-26-27-34-44-55)

UK peak: N/A (#2 in Sweden)

From the album: Icona Pop

'I threw your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs, I crashed my car into the bridge, I don't care, I love it'

Another BJSC entry, and another one from the 45th contest  This one comes courtsey of Ramyrnia (Ryan), and it had a lot of controversy surrounding it then due to the fact it was a hotly contested entry the month before that was surprisingly not entered, but Ryan got it next month! But it was its entry into BJSC that made this punchy Scandipop track climb to its peak in my chart. And recently it's been hitting charts in Australia and New Zealand, peaking top 10 in both countries, so fingers crossed the UK follows...

76

Chart run: (3-8-15-19-24-29)*still charting

UK peak: N/A (#40 in US)

From the album: TBA

'Here lies the girl who's only crutch, was loving one man just a little too much'

My favourite country ensemble now! The first single from their second album, Better Dig Two is a fierce country anthem about undying love, with Kimberley Perry proclaiming she'd rather die than live without her man. It's no If I Die Young, but you can't beat a fierce country track!

75 Alexandra Burke - Elephant

Chart run:(1-5-9-13-14-19-23-19-24-33-38-46-53-63)

UK peak: #1

From the album: Heartbreak On Hold

'Though we're all alone, it's not just me and you'

X-Factor star turned megaflop of the year contender Alexandra Burke has struggled to sell 20k of her album Heartbreak On Hold, but even as far back as the first single from it the era looked so much more promising! Elephant was released after over 2 months of airplay and peaked at #3, albeit with a decline that was faster than Alex will have wanted. The Erick Morillo produced club banger brought promise of a new sound, one that was delivered brilliantly in this case but less so on most of the album.

74

Chart run: (17-15-24-17-30-36-26-35-37-44-53-61)

UK peak: #46

From the album: Devotion

'Wait on, thunder sky, wherever there's smoke there'll soon be fire'

Jessie Ware has been a pleasant surprise for me, I've grown to adore her this past year. This is her closest claim to a 'hit', with the gorgeous downtempo silky smooth track peaking at #46 after ages yo-yoing up and down. All it needs is an advert I think, and it could be big!

73

Chart run: (3-6-9-11-12-25-37-45-54-63)

UK peak: #8

From the album: The Truth About Love

'Just because it burns doesn't mean you're gonna die, you gotta get up and try try try'

Classic P!nk next, with the 2nd best track from her album The Truth About Love. A typically P!nk pop/rock ballad, this managed a #8 peak in the UK following a stunning performance on X-Factor. I'm probably underrating this, fantastic video too!

72

Chart run: (2-4-5-6-11-17-24-30-35-39-42-56)

UK peak: TBA

From the album: Electra Heart (US Edition)

'Rule number 1, is that you gotta have fun'

As you will have seen earlier in the thread, Electra Heart was my #2 album of 2012. This is not one of the better tracks on it, although it's a fun, punchy pure pop track with a rather AMAZING (I wonder why?) video that sounds ready to be a hit. But it won't be a hit.

71

Chart run: (10-12-25-24-32-26-28-14-9-11-14-21-27-42-55-66-72-75)

UK peak: #2

From the album: TBA

'Maybe we were built to break, and this love's a little more than we can take'

My other X-Factor 2012 love (first being Little Mix obv), I was very excited for Amelia's music after the show. Truth be told, I didn't expect a Xenomania stomper that channeled Girls Aloud, but I'll take it! I find it a bit overrated on here, but it's a great pop debut and excites me to hear her album!

Amelia, P!nk and The Beast needed to be higher :(
  • Author

The Beast is higher, with a different song :P

70

Chart run: (6-12-23-33-39-47-xx-12-14-16-23-39-46-55-56-69)

UK peak: #20

From the album: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

'I I I wanna give you one last option, I I I wanna give you one last chance'

Yet another pop single from Nicki! This was originally planned as the lead single, with the video shot and everything, but it was changed to Starships, and this was later released in the UK after that and Pound The Alarm. As a fun pop song, it's a slightly different side to her from Starhips/Pound The Alarm, but didn't do as well.

69

Chart run: (20-13-16-25-36-45-51-56-63-66-73)

UK peak: N/A (#23 in Canada)

From the album: Bodyparts

'We don't need a cure for the weight of the world, 'cause it's floating 'round in the universe'

BJSC entry #3243985 now, Numayania's winner of the 43rd contest. An electro-pop new wave stomper, Let It Go is pretty much typical Dragonette but is all the better for it!

68

Chart run: (8-9-19-18-27-26-34-45-56-xx-12-3-2-6-15-25-32-22-30-39-47-56-55-57-62-64-70-72-75)

UK peak: #1

From the album: Who You Are - Platinum Edition

'You're like a shot of pure gold, I think I'm 'bout to explode'

A monster run for an EOY #68 :o But overplay killed this a bit. Great fun little pop song though, very generic (basically the same song as Brokenhearted, but I'm sure this was recorded first, it was released first anyway) but then it's Jessie J so you can hardly expect a 6 minute long alternative metal track

67

Chart run: (39-29-18-17-16-20-24-39-33-40-49-56-64-74)

UK peak: #16

From the album: Believe

'As long as you love me, I'll be your platinum, I'll be your silver, I'll be your gold'

Yep, Justin Bieber finishing higher in my EOY than some #1s despite a #16 peak, I can't believe it either  God knows I'm not a Bieber fan, but you can't deny this is a tune! I hope he does more stuff like this, Believe was good too on the whole!

66

Chart run: (3-14-22-21-40-55-68-xx-2-4-4-9-12-22-31-47-59-64-71)

UK peak: #3

From the album: Nothing But The Beat

'I need a hero come and save me'

Another low placing for what is quite a good run! A typically generic Guetta track, I really do like it but it hasn't held up as well as it perhaps could have.

65

Chart run: (74-8-11-21-28-26-29-42-53-63-70-73)

UK peak: N/A (#78 in US)

From the album: Hello My Name Is...

'You'll be my William I'll be your Kate, living like a fairytale'

I do love me a Disney female, so when Good Luck Charlie's Bridgit Mendler branched into music I knew it would be good. And 'twas, with her debut single being a brilliant little summery reggae tinged pop jam, and her album bringing more of the same. Promising popstar, shame she'll never get the exposure of Selena or Miley! Another BJSC entry too, Budtar's (Jack500) sizeable hit in BJSC 48.

64

Chart run: (29-27-39-55-39-37-46-59-58-18-25-33-40-45-46-55-57-73)

UK peak: #1

From the album: ORA

'R.I.P. to the girl you used to see, her days are over, her days are over'

When she's not busy being Cheata Whora and sleeping with 20 men when she has a damn fine man at home, Rita has been known to make one or two good songs. This, her debut solo single, being one of them. Much more interesting than her other hit Party (How We Do) (still to come however), this dubstep influenced dark R&B track features Tinie Tempah and went to #1 upon release.

63 Helena Gutarra - Tongues Of Fire

Chart run: (32-5-9-19-35-49-52-59)

UK peak: N/A

From the album: single only

'Tongues of fire, set in motion, round and round goes up and down'

Sharp, quick fall for such a good song! Another BJSC entry too, my own entry to the 44th contest. Despite being a poptastic Robyn-esque gem, it failed to make the final, keeping my then streak of DNQs :drama:

62

Chart run: (9-9-16-17-23-30-40-43-50-56-70)

UK peak: N/A

From the album: Tabu

'Först en blick, sen en touch på ett packat golv'

Timoteij are most known for their ethnopop max track Kom, the Melodifestivalen 2010 highlight, but they came back in 2012 with another bid for Eurovision glory (Stormande Hav lost out to Euphoria by Loreen obviously) and a new album. This was the lead single, a typically ethnopop track fused with dubstep and dance-pop.

From the album: Looking Back

'All this passion and all this pain, just take it like a man and baby walk away'

BJSC AGAIN (seriously taking over ), this time all the back to January for the 41st contest. This light and breezy track by the Butterflies star was entered by Ashton (Silas) and looked like the runaway winner. It was beaten by Foxes' Youth in the end, but still came 2nd and charted well for me!

I'm aware BJSC is taking over this  This Italian epiballad was entered into the 42nd contest by Eledan (Pavel), and although it didn't exactly smash, it remains in my heart. Fun fact: this song was originally meant to Italy's Eurovision entry 2012 after Emma won Sanremo, but the entry was changed to Nina Zilli's Per Sempre (and later changed again to L'amore è feminina, also by Nina Zilli). Perhaps a crap run for an EOY #60 but will happen a few times in this countdown :P

A song with a run like this shouldn't even be #100, but this BJSC winner from January was too good to miss out. A soaring electro-pop track, this beat hot favourite Look Back by Tone Damli to give Dandy* a first win. I predict Foxes for big things in 2013, then again I did that earlier this year too

UK peak: #33

From the album: Heartbreak On Hold

Superstar to flopstar 'The Beast' should have had a successful second era, but as I covered in Elephant's commentary, she's had a remarkably significant sophomore slump. This was what kicked it all off, as a pre-album single it should have gone top 10 with ease. And yet on release week it limped in at #33, becoming easily her lowest peaking single and leading to a disaster of an era. Shame really, this wonderful piece of 90s-esque dance-pop deserves so much more.

From the album: Lotus

Poor Floptina :( Even with Bionic flopping so hard, I really though this confident electropop track would change things for her, and yet Lotus does even worse! It's a shame, because released by Rihanna/Katy Perry this would easily smash.

From the album: San Ena Oneiro (Euro Edition)

More Eurovision now, this time from Cyprus' Ivi Adamou. Despite only coming 16th(?) in the final, Ivi found considerable Euro success, reaching #4 in Sweden and even #77 in the famously Eurovision-phobic United Kingdom (being the only track besides winner Loreen to chart here!). This cheerful, catchy dance-pop track should have done so much better in Eurovision! Odd run for me though, peaked very late!

UK peak: #9

From the album: Misha B

Misha was one of my favourites on 2011's X-Factor, so I was excited to see her musical output. While her debut single Home Run was good, it underwhelmed me, so I was pleasantly surprised by this wonderfully 90s dance-pop track. It peaked slightly higher than her debut in the charts, but was unfortunately marred by a swift fall despite airplay from Radio 1.

5 years in the making, Sitting On Top Of The World was the first single from Delta's fourth album Child Of The Universe. Although not too radical a departure from her usual piano pop (it was like a chirpier You Will ONly Break My Heart musically, in a way), this introduced a new Delta which was backed up with the range of styles on the album. Though this was (unsurprisingly) a sizeable hit in Australia, it failed to catch on in the UK following a non-release ofher Delta era.

Another bizzare placing for such a crap run, but I do love this song. This gorgeously heartwrenching electro ballad deserved much more in my chart, but I only recently realised it. Icaused uproar in BJSC as about 10 posters all wanted it back in June. Pavel beat everyone to it, but the track was veto'd and never used again (unlike the likes of Outta My Head by Diandra but that's another matter). Following Rosanna's absolutely glorious Waterfall, Faye makes sure ex Play members carry on with amazing solo material.

UK peak: DNC (#19 in Sweden)

From the album: Heal

The first entry for the Eurovision Queen 2012, after seeing her album Heal just miss the EOY top 10 on the albums side. Crying Out Your Name was the lead single from the album in Sweden (the rest of Europe seemed to get a remixed version of 2011 EOY #28 My Heart Is Refusing Me), and is a heartbreaking sad-pop electro banger. Oxymoron much? Another song that should've had a better chart run for me!

From the album: Brava! Reloaded

'Boys are always playing silly games games games if I fall then I'm the only one to blame blame blame'

Yet another BJSC entry, back to the 43rd contest. This RedOne produced summer anthem was hotly tipped to win, but was pipped to the post by Let It Go by Dragonette. Definitely the 'Mexican Madonna''s best track, from what I've heard of her long career.
