/ \ 54 :: BEN HOWARD :: "THE WOLVES" / \

27-24-22-x

WHAT did this really never get higher than #22 for me. Ridic. Anyway. I'm all for the whole folk revival thingy that's gone on since Mumford & Sons so I was always gonna love Ben Howard really. Ben seems slightly more 'authentic' than Mumford & Sons as well, maybe just because I don't readily associate London with folk-y music. 'Every Kingdom' is very high up on my stop-being-lazy list of albums to listen to, this is my fave of the singles from it (I do at least like all of them though 'Keep Your Head Up' is significantly weaker than the others; 'Only Love' was one the last songs to be cut from the longlist for this). I did listen to his EP from a couple of months back and it is a great little EP although I didn't love any of the songs enough to individually contend for this list.

9-15-13-9-7-10-9-7-7-5-2-4-9-15-23-27-x

Slightly overkill chart run in retrospect. I'm going to justify liking this so much because it might as well just be a Chase & Status single, the production and Tinie Tempah's guest part both contribute far more to my love of this song than Rita's own rather unspectacular parts. Moving on swiftly so I don't have to admit to liking something associated with Rita Ora any more.

/ \ 52 :: PSY :: "GANGNAM STYLE" / \

Yes it is just an LMFAO song in Korean. I realise this. But after initially just loving that video (still the best thing ever) the song itself somehow managed to grow on me and it became a top 10 hit on my chart. Despite how long it's gone on I still don't think the 'joke' has worn thin at all, I still burst into hysterical laughter at the pool/lift/toilet bits of the video. Classic. I'm still not getting on board with K-Pop so don't get too excited Yu (although I did shamefully love Ailee's 'I Will Show You' so perhaps PSY is exposing some cracks eek. STAY STRONG KOREAN-HATING BRÉ).

/ \ 51 :: NELLY FURTADO :: "BIG HOOPS (BIGGER THE BETTER)" / \

2-3-3-1-2-4-6-10-12-21-30-x

Oh Nelly. Iconic flop of the year right year, with emphasis on the 'flop' part. This song has a really messy structure which elicited comparisons to 'Run The World (Girls)' at the time of its release. Completely undeserved. 'Big Hoops' is INCRED while 'Run The World' was just shite, the two are just not comparable. Hook after hook after hook and every one as amaze at the last. Considering what I just said #51 feels a bit low especially as it's significantly below the rest of my 2012 #1s. It's just I haven't listened to this for AAAGES, maybe because everything she did after this completely killed what could have been an incredible era for her. Shame.

On schedule. Might even do another section today, ahead of time. I'll try not to go too crazy!!!

Sorry it's going a bit slow! Would recommend ignoring this thread until it's finished/ENTIRELY tbh cos it probably is gonna end up a bit disappointing oops. *does not have good taste*

I come back Christmas 2013 :(

Slightly overkill chart run in retrospect. I'm going to justify liking this so much because it might as well just be a Chase & Status single, the production and Tinie Tempah's guest part both contribute far more to my love of this song than Rita's own rather unspectacular parts. YES YES YES to what you've just said.

I was shamefully obsessed with this song for a few weeks when it was released. :( If I was active on Buzzjack during that time, I'd have looned over the song more than I looned over DNA when it came out. :lol: Funny how things change.

Hey! I'll wait until the end to do some proper comments, but I'm really liking this so far (lets just forget about THAT at 68), Hurts Like Heaven was always a highlight from that album, shame they waited until no one really cares any more until they released it to radio and a rather creative video :( I do like the other two singles too, but it appears you've beaten me in the fan stakes this year as neither made my top 60 this year :P

My biggest BJSC hit in 2012 (not really saying much as it only came 14th) and also my personal favourite conveniently.

No 'Keep You'? :(

'R.I.P.' is one cheap entry I can get on-board with. Do love a bit of Chase & Status produx.

'Keep You' was on the longlist (along with all my other entries bar Machines) and one of the later ones to go but alas 100 songs is just not enough! Would have done a top 150 if I could be bothered to do that much commentary.

I'm becoming a lot more open to charting BJSC tracks recently so I expect my 2013 EOY to have a lot more BJSC tracks in it than this one! Hopefully some Syndare representation unless 'Trust' is a sign of things to come *shudder*

OH i didn't mean I was getting bored, just you were warning of fewer non-chart hits to come! I'll definitely be checking out a lot of the higher end ones that I haven't heard as you do seem to be a good barometer of such taste. Gangnam Style aside.

Oh that makes sense I guess. There are literally 5 songs in my top 50 which weren't top 40 hits eek. Hope you like generic chart dance/hip-hop. (Not generic chart dance as in female dance-pop though. That has approx. 0 representation).

Apologies for my uncalled for outburst in the shout box. I don't know what (probably Cody) came over me.

I will claw back into your good books by expressing my love for D'banj, Coldplay, PSY, Plan B & Ben Howard :wub:

Kinda loving your 51-100 actually! G'WON BRE

Not bad. I suppose both Robbie & Olly are to come :D

If the top half is really as top 40 centric as you say I hope that 'Feel The Love', 'Ill Manors' and something by Swedish House Mafia are top 10.

/ \ 50 :: TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB :: "SUN" / \

24-3-2-3-6-...

The third out of 15 songs on this list to be in my final top 40 of 2012 (the previous two were 'Tidal Wave' and 'Yeah Yeah', whose chart runs I have gone back and updated to include the final week) and one of the latest entries to make an appearance is Two Door Cinema Club's 'Sun', the second single from their 'Beacon' album. There was something about 'Sleep Alone' that just prevented me from loving it as much as the singles from 'Tourist History' but whatever that was lacking 'Sun' has it in droves and it restores the magic of Two Door Cinema Club. It still sounds markedly different to the singles off their debut (in fact the entire album sounds like a big progression to my ears at least, not sure where the general opinion on that lies) but it's a step in the right direction. A bit more mature to be extremely cliché. The only thing holding this back from being much higher here is how long it took me to get into it.

/ \ 49 :: KANYE WEST, BIG SEAN, PUSHA T AND 2 CHAINZ :: "MERCY" / \

3-6-11-14-22-x

As a big fan of Kanye West I was slightly disappointed with this song on first listen. The introduction (sampled from dancehall legend Fuzzy Jones) was bizarre, the hook was weak and so were the verses of Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz (Kanye's verse was the only part that didn't disappoint me to some extent). Since then all of those elements have grown on me and while Kanye's verse is still my favourite part, Big Sean's almost rivals it. Still rather weak for the first single of a Kanye era, or technically in this case a GOOD Music era, though I care little for 'Cruel Summer' besides the Kanye tracks. Thankfully there was better to come. (And yes, that's 2 of the last 5 UK non-top 40 hits gone in the first 2 songs).

/ \ 48 :: CALVIN HARRIS :: "LET'S GO" (FEAT. NE-YO) / \

21-15-10-4-5-4-5-7-10-19-22-29-x

After tasting a bit of success in the USA with his Rihanna collaboration 'We Found Love' and his own 'Feel So Close', Calvin Harris turned to a big current US star, Ne-Yo, for 'Let's Go'. When I first found out about this I worried that he had completely sold out and gone totally generic, as opposed to just a bit generic like he had already become with 'Bounce'. My worries turned out to be right. This IS extremely generic. However, I don't think being generic is inherently bad, it just greatly improves the chance that I won't like something and this still managed to escape that. It's very much a 'We Found Love' clone but I loved that and I can't help but love the occasional Ne-Yo track and his vocals sound great on here. Apparently the first leaked version of this lacked Ne-Yo's ad libs over the second half of the obligatory Calvin breakdown, I'm glad they were added on because they're probably my favourite part of the song.

/ \ 47 :: CONOR MAYNARD :: "TURN AROUND" (FEAT. NE-YO) / \

17-8-8-11-19-20-28-27-31-x

Speaking of 'can't help but love the occasional Ne-Yo track' here he is again, featuring on Conor Maynard's 'Turn Around'. This was the third in a trio of great singles from Conor. On first listen I couldn't really get into it at all and I feared he'd used up all his good songs in the first 2 singles but on repeated listens it came very close to being my favourite of his. It was a good idea of his marketing people to save this for a post-album release as I think this sounds a lot more mature than 'Can't Say No' and 'Vegas Girl' and has a wider appeal than them, so while they could be hits due to his fanbase which he apparently has already they'd have stood no chance after the album release, while this would have done well whenever it got released. This almost sounds like it slightly half-heartedly samples the 'woah-oh' from Kings Of Leon's 'Use Somebody', much like The Wanted's 'Lose My Mind' but to better effect.

/ \ 46 :: CONOR MAYNARD :: "VEGAS GIRL" / \

5-2-3-7-9-20-23-x

Conor Maynard helped Ne-Yo to have 2 songs in a row and Ne-Yo does the same for Conor in return. Marginally my favourite of the Maynard singles is the second (and based on its commercial success, most fanbase-oriented, oops), 'Vegas Girl'. I'm an unashamed fan of Justin Timberlake (the music only) and eagerly anticipate the moment he finally drops a third album, but in the meantime I can put up with others pretending to be him when they're successful at it. This is by far the best Timb-a-like of 2012, which had quite a few from the likes of Bieber, JLS and Tyler James. That's the last REALLY embarrassing song on this chart until probably #7 so let's move on to some more 'credible' stuff.

/ \ 45 :: MUSE :: "SURVIVAL" / \

7-7-11-19-24-30-18-7-22-28-x

Well, maybe a somewhat 'credible' band with a song that got almost universally slated instead. Muse struck me as a great choice to record the official song of the 2012 London Olympics and in my opinion at least they 100% delivered that, this is a great epic-sounding track that's perfect sonically and lyrically for the Games. It did advance Muse's quest to sound like Queen in every way possible but I don't see that as a bad thing, Queen were a great band so I have no qualms with a similar sounding band being around. It's a shame this didn't really turn out to have anything to do with the Olympics at all, for the supposed official song it was used very little in coverage - however it did at least have a brilliant performance at the Closing Ceremony. 'Survival' unluckily (or maybe luckily?) peaked at #7 for three non-consecutive weeks on my chart, but I was never big on the follow-up 'Madness' at all which never touched my weekly charts and was nowhere near troubling this EOY.
