I have noticed that the two best selling singles of 2012, Goyte with "Somebody That I Used To Know" and Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe" are acts currently on the brink of one and two hit wonder-dom. The former looking VERY likely, the latter a possible career in the 101-200 reach of the singles chart.

Have we ever had an instance where the either one or both of the best selling singles of the year have been very short-lived acts?

I guess the nearest/ most recent would be Band Aid 20 (if you count that as a group) and Eamon in 2004

I'd see Band Aid as a collective as it was a charity ensemble, but counting the two other previous releases (with different line-ups), they'd do count. Eamon, did he ever have another single after "Love Them Hos"?

Both Black Box & Jive Bunny had several other hits - Jive Bunny had two other number one!
Black Box and Jive Bunny in 1989

Yeah Blackbox had 3 top 10 hits and 6 top 40 hitsand Jive Bunny had 3 number 1 singles.

Yeah but they're hardly know for being long time chart-botherers.

If you look closer at that years top 10 selling singles the top 4 sellers were all one hit wonders, 5 of the top 6 were (almost) one hit wonders (Michelle McManus had a minor top 20 hit) and 6 of the top 10 were one hit wonders. Actually 8 of the top 12 were one hit wonders!

1 Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid 20- 1,094,000

2 F**k It (I Don't Want You Back) - Eamon - 552,407

3 Cha Cha Slide - DJ Casper - 351,421

4 Call on Me - Eric Prydz - 335,000

5 Yeah - Usher - 300,000

6 All This Time - Michelle McManus -292,000 (ish)

7 Left Outside Alone - Anastacia - 275,000

8 Mysterious Girl - Peter André - 261,000

9 Toxic - Britney Spears - 260,000

10 f*** You Right Back - Frankee - 246,000

11 I Don't Wanna Know - Mario Winans - 242,000

12 Baby Cakes - 3 of a Kind - 230,000

EDIT: Just remember Eric Prydz isn't a one hit wonder (well he kind of is in the sense that thats his only song most people remember.

I think 'Pjanoo' is fairly well remembered as well... 'Proper Education' not as much though.

What's Gotye up to these days?

Milking his one big hit I guess. Didn't he say he was taking some time out from performing this year on the End of Year show?

You could add Psy to the list as well. It's kinda funny how the four biggest hits of 2012 were from unknown artists.

Fun. as well only had one other hit (so far).

There wont be any middle ground with PSY, his next song will either be another massive worldwide #1 or he wont release another song that charts in the top 100.

Eric Prydz may have only had 2 massive chart smashes (Call On Me and Pjanoo) but he is still doing well in the underground electronic dance music scene, whereas Eamon, Frankee, 3 Of A Kind, Mario Winans, DJ Casper, and Michelle McManus have all disappeared completely as far as I know (someone tell me if I'm wrong). Obviously Band Aid 20 shouldn't be in the "where are they now" list because they've only ever done one song as that group and I'm sure many people in BA20 are still popular today.

Of course I am saying this as an Eric Prydz fan.

Didnt 3 of a Kind have a follow-up? Frankee was deffo a one hit wonder, however Eamonn is an underground hip-hop star, so going strong!

No they didn't. They were going to but it got pulled. Here's the quote from Wikipedia

3 of a Kind never released a follow-up to "Baby Cakes", making them one-hit wonders in the UK. A potential follow-up track, "Wink One Eye", was put forward as the second single, but was pulled from the new release listings and never re-scheduled.

They split up in 2005 according to Wiki too. I guess no-one knows what they're doing now...

Does anyone even know the song? I tried to find it on YT but no luck :(

Michelle is a presenter on a Scottish TV show called "The Hour" so she hasn't completely vanished (musically she released a charity single for STV last year but it did nothing).

I heard it back in the day and it was even worse than 'Baby Cakes'. :puke: It definitely exists somewhere...
