Midweek Charts: Biffy Clyro heading for first No 1 album

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Biffy Clyro are spectacularly heading for their first UK chart-topping album with Opposites taking just three days to match the entire opening week sales of predecessor Only Revolutions.

The newly-issued 14th Floor/Warner Bros album had sold 43,577 copies up to the end of trading on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company, more than the combined sales of the four artist album titles immediately below it.

Opposites' tally after three days compares to Only Revolutions in its entire first week in November 2009 selling 43,113 copies as it debuted at No 3, one place below the arrival and peak of the album before that, Puzzle, in June 2007.

Another Warner album, the Rhino/Warner Bros release Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, is heading for a dramatic return to the Top 10 some 35 years after it spent its only week leading the UK albums chart. One of the 20 biggest-selling albums of all time in the UK, it re-appears as a new entry at No 4 in a 35th anniversary addition, even though it is actually 36 years since the album first came out. In the US the album originally headed the Billboard chart for 31 weeks between 1977 and 1978.

Sitting aboveFleetwood Mac, Polydor's Les Miserables album drops to 2 having secured a second week at No 1 last Sunday as a new version of Def Jam/Mercury act Justin Bieber's 2011 album Believe, called Believe - Acoustic, enters at 3. Emeli Sande's Virgin album Our Version Of Events falls 2-5, while Andrea Bocelli's new Decca album Passione is new at 8.

Slipping a place to 6 at this stage of the week is Def Jam/Mercury act Rihanna's Unapologetic, while her We Found Love partner Calvin Harris's Columbia set 18 Months falls 3-7. Below them, two acts enjoy healthy sales and chart lifts after appearing on Jonathan Ross's ITV1 show last Saturday with Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra's Rhino set The Golden Age Of Swing up 15-9 with sales lifting 90%, while sales of RCA act Alicia Keys' Girl On Fire increase 223% as it lifts 38-10.

Funeral For A Friend's sixth album, the Distiller-issued Conduit, is new at 16 at this stage of the week and should beat the No 33 peak of their last album Welcome Home Armageddon in March 2011. Also set to debut in this coming Sunday's chart will be new entries for Polydor's Delphic, Infectious's Local Natives and Atlantic/Big Beat/Circus's Flux Pavilion.

Ministry of Sound's Bingo Players are just ahead on the singles midweeks in their quest for a second week at No 1 with Get Up (Rattle) featuring Far East Movement, while the rest of the top five is also the same as it was on last Sunday's chart. Will.i.am featuring Britney Spears' Interscope/Polydor single Scream & Shout holds at 2 as Mercury act Taylor Swift is static at 3 with I Knew You Were Trouble. Def Jam/Mercury act Rihanna holds at 4 with Stay featuring Mikky Ekko and Drinking From The Bottle by Calvin Harris featuring Tinie Tempah is still at 5.

Emeli Sande's Virgin single Clown progresses two places to 6 as Conor Maynard's Parlophone single Animal featuring Wiley falls 6-7 and the Interscope/Polydor collective of 50 Cent, Eminem and Adam Levine are down two places to 9 with My Life. Between them the current Billboard Hot 100 No 1 Thrift Shop by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Wanz rises 24-8. Sales of the single, released on the Macklemore label, are up 284% in the week to date. The London-issued Don't Stop the Party by Pitbull featuring Jr completes the Tp 10 at this stage of the week, holding at 10.

An Island pairing of Devlin and Diane Birch shows up as a new entry at 12 with Rewind, while Polydor act Ellie Goulding's Explosions vaullts 33-16 with sales rising 117%. The midweek chart's other big climbers include Columbia/Roc Nation act Rita Ora whose Radioactive is up 32-20.

Midweek Charts update: Return of the Mac to top five

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Fleetwood Mac are heading for their highest UK chart peak in more than 20 years as a re-issued version of Rumours targets a top five debut.

The Rhino/Warner Bros album, whose original version came out in 1977, is showing up as a new entry at 3 in the latest midweek artist albums charts, according to the Official Charts Company. This makes it on course to give the Anglo-American band their best chart ranking in the UK since Behind The Mask reached No 1 in 1990.

Ahead of Rumours, 14th Floor/Warner Bros's Biffy Clyro are gearing up for their first UK chart-topper with Opposites having sold 56,165 copies by the end of business on Thursday. Polydor's Les Miserables soundtrack drops from 1 to 2, Justin Bieber arrives at 4 with the Def Jam/Mercury-issued Believe - Acoustic and Virgin's Emeli Sande slides 2-5 with Our Version Of Events.

Also likey to score a Top 10 entry on Sunday is Andrea Bocelli whose brand new Decca set Passione is new at 7 in the current midweeks, while Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra's Rhino album The Golden Age Of Song could move into the Top 10 for the first time following Holland's guest appearance on Jonathan Ross's ITV1 show. It climbs 15-9 at this stage of the week with weekly sales up 57%.

On singles the Ministry of Sound-issued Get Up (Rattle) by Bingo Players featuring Far East Movement is right now in position to spend a second week at No 1, but faces stiff competition from Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Lewis featuring Wanz, currently topping the Billboard Hot 100. The track, released on the Macklemore label in the UK, had moved 24-10 on the midweek chart published on Tuesday but is now up to 4. Ahead of it at present, Interscope/Polydor act will.i.am holds at 2 with Scream & Shout featuring Britney Spears as Mercury's Taylor Swift remains at 3 with I Knew You Were Trouble. Rihanna drops a place to 5 with her Def Jam/Mercury cut Stay featuring Mikky Ekko.

I'm predicting Biffy Clyro to be number one with sales on Sunday of about 60k, Justin Bieber and Flux Pavilion to be Top 10 in at least the Wednesday midweeks (I'd say Justin Bieber will still be Top 10 come Sunday though). Either Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits or Rumours will be Top 10, with both at least Top 20.

the drummer from Funeral For A Friend saying on Twitter that Conduit is No12 in the midweeks so it will probably be lower when you get Monday + Tuesday sales included tomorrow

decent start for them though :)

"Black Chandelier" was as big as anyone could have expected really so I'm still hopeful of closer to 100k than 50, although I haven't even bought it yet. Will probably listen to the previews or wait for the next single.
Fleetwood Mac are top 10

Source?

Yeah, Fleetwood Mac are Top 10 with Rumours:

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours looks set to re-enter the Official Albums Chart Top 10 this Sunday, 35 years after if first reached Number 1 in the UK. To celebrate, OfficialCharts.com reveal the band’s Top 10 most downloaded tracks of all time – the Official Fleetwood Mac Digital Top 10.

The Risk #32 in the midweeks

JoshuaByron ‏@JoshuaByron

if you sold 17,000 units you would be number 1 in the midweeks at the moment... that just sounds weird to me

So I'm guessing that's a bit of sales info there?

Joseph Hatch ‏@hellohatchy

The midweeks this morning are the most depressing ever - sales must be at their lowest ebb?

My first thought would be that 17k is perfectly fine, but I guess since its most likely Biffy Clyro at number one, they'll be looking at sales of 40k-50k.

I'm guessing those are the album sales, mind you they wouldn't be far off if those sales belong to the #1 single

I assumed they'd be for the singles, cause around 17k would probably be what we'd know as normal for the album sales at this point nowadays. Single sales would generally be much higher.

Funeral For A Friend #12 on the album mids -

Press released At The Drive-In. And FFAF are number 12 in the midweeks. Pretty good day.
