I'm actually surprised that there's a demand for such a chart. I didn't think that the sales for these sorts of albums would be that high, and shops that would sell this sort of music (mainly specialist Christian and Evangelical outlets) wouldn't send their data to the OCC. Oh well, at least it means that a Northern Irish artist will always have a #1 around Christmas time, given that The Priests' yearly album is always a feature.

I wasn't saying that actually. And Nicki is a part of religious music. Have you not heard Roman Holiday by the way :)

Perhaps Lady Gaga's Judas could make an appearance if there was a singles version of this chart. :P

Official Christian & Gospel Albums Chart – first Top 20 revealed!

Hillsong United’s Zion claims first Official Christian & Gospel Albums Chart Number 1.

 

The UK’s first Official Christian & Gospel Albums Chart was launched this evening (March 11) by the Official Charts Company in partnership with Compassion.

 

The first Number 1 on the new sales-based rundown is claimed by Australian Christian rockers Hillsong United with their latest studio album, Zion. The critically-acclaimed album, released in the UK at the end of February, is the band’s third studio album, and before topping the UK’s Official Christian & Gospel Albums Chart this week, it had already topped Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart, and debuted in the Top 5 of the US’ Billboard Chart.

 

“We are honoured that our album, Zion, has reached Number 1 on the UK’s first Official Christian & Gospel Albums Chart,” the band told OfficialCharts.com. “We would like to thank all those who have supported Hillsong United. It’s humbling and exciting to know that this album is inspiring people not just in Australia, but across the globe to live with purpose and to put their trust in God. In a world where negativity is so dominant, we hope Zion can be a sound of joy and hope.”

 

The band’s label Hillsong Music UK added:

The Official Christian & Gospel Albums Chart will be published every Monday on OfficialCharts.com here and will be broadcast on leading Christian digital stations Premier Radio and UCB.

Does anybody remember The SFX Boys Choir? They split up due to some controversy though, I remember when they were popular they were in the news a lot because the guy who started the choir was rumoured to have child porn on his computer. That's probably the biggest Christian music group I can think of in recent years, unless I'm missing something really obvious.

I guess you could argue that the Christmas songs are Christian, sort of.

You could argue that Cliff's Christmas offerings are Christian, but you'd be on very shaky (see what I did there) ground to claim that Slade, Wizzard, Wham! and the like are of similar sentiment.
