And I don't mean predicting it when something is on 700k and still in the top 10, I mean before it even enters the chart.

Aside from X-Factor winners (and even that's not guaranteed) I think it's pretty difficult.

Two tracks that I thought would do it, 'Born This Way' & 'Skyfall' although big hits of course will probably never come near the million mark.

Anybody had any real successes?

I predicted Gotye, Gangnam Style and Titanium almost immediately when they we released. I was in Egypt in Dec 2011 when I first heard Gotye & Gangnam when I was DJing in Bahrain back in August and immediately I was certain these were going to be mega worldwide. Titanium, when I first purchased it as a promo single before the album came out I was hooked. I really wanted Jennifer Hudson's vocals on 'Night of Your Life' to be a massive seller too but it wasnt meant to be :(

Well I always thought 'Bad Romance' was a surefire million seller and it's not that far off.

However, as much as I'm delighted about this, I really didn't think Gotye feat. Kimbra would become a million seller. Same with 'Titanium' after the track seemed to stall at no. 16 when first released. Proves how the power of radio airplay and a good music video can do wonders to help sell a single.

Not really in the case of Titanium since it was a promo single when it debuted at #16, which is actually really impressive for a promo single. It got some airplay as a promo single too.

True, but it wasn't until it was "officially" made a single that the airplay increased. Had 'Titanium' never been given a proper release, and another Guetta track had been instead then 'Titanium' would never have sold as much as it has done. Kudos to the record company though, spot on decision.

Sorry to bump up a very old thread, but I must've missed it first time round.

Alas, the only million-seller I predicted in advance was 'Candle In The Wind'

Generally speaking, my predictions of success are the kiss of death for any song, though. :(

How on earth did you stumble across it, it's almost a year old!

Get Lucky & Wake Me Up from last year.

Did you really predict 'Get Lucky' would sell a million copies before it even entered the chart though?

I have to say only did this once and it was with no certainty at all - Passanger, Let Her Go.

Well, reading your profile actually. :)

Upon hearing wake me up I was like 'oh my f***, this is going to be massive.'

From last year I liked get lucky but never thought it would reach a million. Same with passenger although I thought blurred line was abhorrent.

However I did think dark horse is a possibility before single release and that still may grace 1 million.

Although I did get wake me up right so call me bobkiller the clairvoyant ;)

I refuse to believe anyone listens to a song for the first time and genuinely says "ooh this will be a UK MILLION SELLER"

I kind of agree to be honest. I'll think to myself that a song will be massive but I never think whether it'll pass 1m or not.

How many times *should* they listen to it, then?

There's not much on there to be honest, but this was (and still is) the only thread I've ever started. I was rather disappointed it didn't garner much interest first time round so I'm glad to see it getting a new lease of life!

That's rather graceless isn't it? Music should be listened to with the level of quality taken into consideration instead of how much it's going to sell.

I've predicted 1 million seller only: Band Aid 20-Do They Know It's Christmas. And even then, with the poor reception, it could have gone either way.

I've always been terrible at this, even back on the old CoolClarity forum I remember prediction threads for things like 'Ghetto Gospel' and everyone completely unanimously agreed it was a really obvious #1 in the making. I remember thinking "Really?!" but yep, they were all correct.

Ditto completely the last post in that the only one I can positively say I knew would sell a million was Band Aid 20, and that was a decade ago. Indeed I'd have perhaps also guessed Rihanna - Umbrella after about the eighth or ninth week but that never even made it!

Indeed looking at the million sellers since then there's very few I would have even guessed would be number 1 at all, except for the X Factor winners.

Haven't you learned by now that I never make comments in a way *intended* to upset, or cause offence - unfortunately some people don't get my sardonic humour.
