Ben's CD is mine woo.

Le tracklist:

01 Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto - Cry For Freedom

02 Emika - Drop The Other

03 Crystal Fighters - Xtatic Truth

04 Riton and Primary 1 - Who's There?

05 Shy Child - Disconnected

06 David's Lyre - In Arms

07 Toto - Africa

08 Cults - Go Outside

09 Beat Connection - In The Water

10 Filthy Dukes feat. Orlando Weeks - Nonsense In The Dark

Very pleased to see you liking 'Cry For Freedom', I came close to sending it to BJSC in my first ever contest - would have gone down like a lead balloon I'm sure! 'In The Water' actually is a former BJSC entry of mine (one of my favourites of my own entries) which sadly DNQed somehow so thought I'd give it a bit of a new life in this while I had the opportunity! (Well done Harve for sussing that one out BTW :P)

The first thing I thought when I saw the applications for this opening was I would do a CD and include something random and well-known in the middle of it and 'Africa' was the first thing that came to mind. One of my favourite songs of all time. Not sure if it's a generally well appreciated song or usually seen as a bit naff but glad it went to someone else who likes it.

-x-

Thank you for the new link, just downloading it now and hopefully this one will actually work. Assuming it does I will try and get something done tonight but I can't promise it especially as I'm voting in BJSC tonight. I just completely forgot about this whole thing over the Easter holidays when I actually would have had the time to do it :drama: I can only apologise.

Hooray the new link is actually working!

EDIT: I SPOKE TOO SOON, only 3 of the tracks work because the rest apparently have too long names and it doesn't want to let me rename them argh.

EDIT2: Renamed the folder instead and they're now all working except track 4 which is still too long :/ ~technical problemos~

Explosions

Includes an artwork of an orange background and (obviously) an explosion.

01. Nice start. Not on English language, but that doesn't mean anything of course. 8/10

02. Brilliant music, kinda strange lyrical content though. 8.5/10

03. Great dancey pop tune, quite my thing every now and then. 8.5/10

04. A bit too long, or one too many verses but good track nevertheless. Probably takes a while to get used to. 8/10

05. This is the highlight of the CD, where the title of the CD is taken from. 8/10

06. The violins make this track more anthemic. 8.5/10

07. Very 80s pop, with heavy beats. Nice. 7.5/10

08. Another 80s sound, or at least it reminds me of. It's a grower I guess. 7/10

09. Non-English. The pace is getting slower, which is expected of course. Anyway, it's decent enough. 7/10

10. Decent track. Production could've been a little better I feel. 7/10

11. Decent track as well. 7/10

12. Near 5 minute track. Vocally, it kinda reminds me of Loreen. Nice. 7.5/10

13. Good. 8/10

14. Decent dance track. 7.5/10

15. Things get different from here on. Great track, I like the wobbles in the 2nd verse. 8/10

16. Sounds great musically. 8/10

17. Decent enough. 7.5/10

18. The song suitably ends in like a clock ticking. 8/10

Dunno who made this, but someone definitely made a lot of effort to this. And I wonder if this CD was actually made for me?

Sorry that my review is rushed...

That'll be mine... Glad you liked it! I had no idea who I was making it for, so I'm pleased it went to a good match!

Sorry I was a bit late with this. Also, sorry it's a bit rushed.

A Crack To The Back Of The Head

1 - Starting off with a bit of funk and blues. This is normally not my 'territory' but I quite liked this one. It just has this good-feel and rythm all the way through. I know very few artist in this genre but one of them is Sly Stone -

And if I'm not completely wrong I think there is som Sly Stone in this as well. 5/10

2 - Same type of genre as #1. Funky - and while it's not that bad at all, I do end up feeling a bit bored of it. I'm not familiar with the artist. 4/10

3 - This one reminds a bit of Prince. So, we are still in the same genre but with a bit more guitar and cathy riffs - which is more for my liking. 5/10

4 - I like the development on this CD. While we are still moving in the funky atmosphere, it's has this natural flow to it. This song actually reminded me of Fool's Gold. No idea who it is, though. Pretty good. 7/10

5 - A bit relieved by this track. While it's not my favorite track on the CD, I would find it hard to hear 17 songs that - at least in my head - are quite similar in shape and sound like the previous 4 tracks.

This has a more rough edge to it followed up with some epic brass instruments. 6/10

6 - This is more 'me'. And I know this track. It's Pond with 'Fantastic Explosion Of Time'. Psychedelic, indie rock-ish. Great! 7/10

7 - Is that japanese? Actually, this wasn't THAT bad. But really not a fan of the vocal. 4/10

8 - This one probably the most catchy of the lot so far. 'i can dream all day...' I like these 90s grunge/garage rock elements in this one. 7/10

9 - This is 'Clowny Clown Clown'. He hates the clown, I hate this song, haha. 2/10

10 - Not sure what to make of this. A very sweet 60s-70s (could be dead wrong here) pop song. Not really feeling it. 4/10

11 - 80's surfer-pop song. Has a good feeling to it. I like it. 7/10

12 - Morrisey is obviously the first thing that strikes me of this pop song. While I'm sure it's not Morrisey, it really does sound an awful lot like it. It's alright, I guess. 6/10

13 - This is probably my favorite. Very elegant, atmospheric and refined. Loved the drums. 8/10

14 - Sounds very 90's and britpop-ish. I'm a bit uneasy with this one. It's has this recognizable and nostalgic 90's sound to it but I wasn't really overwhelmed. 5/10

15 - This sounds very danish in some way. But I'm quite sure I would have known if that was the case. It's pretty good. Quite catchy. Also, vocals reminded me a bit of Tom Smith's in the beginning. (just a bit) 7/10

16 - Meh. I missed a bit of development which I thought was underway when the vocals appeared, but sadly not. 4/10

17 - Great finish to this CD with Suuns - 2020. 7/10

I feared I'd get a CD with nothing but cheesy pop tracks - I'm glad I didn't.

What I got was a collection of songs with a great, thoughtful flow from start to finish that - while stayed within the theme and these rather old sounds all the way through - still moved in a various mix of genres.

It wasn't a CD that really fitted my taste in particuar but I can only admire and appreciate how well it was made. This is a complete contradiction to my own collection of songs which are quite incohesive.

Hi Thomsen,

This was mine and I'm glad you got something out of the compilation. I realise not all the tracks are to everyone's taste and there was one track which I couldn't resist putting in more as a joke than anything else. Still here's the tracklist:

1. Dr. John - Right Place Wrong Time (2:53) I don't know much about Dr. John but this is fromm his first album in 1967 or something and it's a bit of a corker.

2. Sly & The Family Stone - Thank You For Talkin' To Me Africa (7:13) The second track is actually a bit of Sly

3. Terence Trent D'Arby - This Side Of Love (5:00) Spot on with the Prince comparisons there. I adore this track but it was an absolute flop at the time of release

4. Moonflowers - Get Higher (4:30) Crusty baggy groove band from Bristol active around the start of the 90s

5. Thee Hypnotics - Shakedown (5:41) One of my all-time favourite bands. The lead singer, Jim Jones, is now better known for the Jim Jones Revue.

6. Pond - Fantastic Explosion Of Time (4:26) Yes it's Pond with a cracking track.

7. Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - Get Up Lucy (4:36) My favourite Japanese band. This lot used to crack the Japanese Top 40 quite regularly.

8. The Posies - Dream All Day (3:06) Great power-pop grunge track and the album Frosting on the Beater is full of such gems.

9. Crispin Hellion Glover - Clowny Clown Clown (2:55) Otherwise known as George McFly from Back to the Future

10. Art Imperial - Cult Of Love (3:47) I know nothing about them apart from this was actually released last year!

11. The High - Box Set Go (4:01) Total baggy also-rans but this is a class track that actually made the UK Top 40.

12. Bradford - Skin Storm (3:15) Morrissey did cover this but the original is the better version.

13. Low - Sunflower (4:39) Such a sad song. They have made some gorgeous music. Not keen on their latest album though.

14. Subcircus - 86'd (3:49) Active in the mid-90s, didn;t really get the success I think they should have had.

15. Leaves - Catch (4:31) This lot are actually Icelandic. I only just got this album from Poundland for a quid. Total bargain.

16. Spirea X - Spirea Rising (4:26) Just a sweet groove to this one, the band was led by Jim Beattie formerly from Primal Scream.

17. Suuns - 2020 (4:14) The rather wonderful Suuns with a track from their new album.

Thanks again for the review.

  • 2 weeks later...

In the absence of any further posts, perhaps those who haven't had their CDs revealed yet could just post their track listings so we can see what was on them? Not sure how many there are (aside from my own) but it still feels like a fair few.

At least that way we can just wrap this up...

I'm wondering if anybody else sitting without a review wants to swap? It's a lot more fun to make a cd if you actually get some feedback on it.

Happy to swap with you or anyone else if my link still works. Be warned that it may be tough going though!!! :D

I'd reveal my tracklist but I have good word that my recipient will end up reviewing my CD! And I don't want to end up telling who's on it as I'm convinced it works better this way.
