Given the likelihood of PJ & Duncan being #1 this Sunday, I thought it might be interesting to think of what other surprise #1's there have been - i.e. ones that were unknown, or not even considered a possibility just a week or two before. I don't think we should include posthumous chart-toppers though (*), as they are invariably by already-well-known artists.

(*) Only those in the immediate aftermath of the artists death, though.

The two most obvious ones I can think of are :

Nizlopi - JCB Song

Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

Rudimental feat. John Newman "Feel The Love"

Labrinth feat. Emeli Sande "Beneath Your Beautiful"

Florence + The Machine "Spectrum"

Nero "Promises"

Rihanna "Diamonds"

Diamonds is a questionable one, we all knew Rihanna's comeback single would go to #1 but it was an OA/OS release that we didn't know was happening until that week.

Would Mint Royale count on the back of George Sampson winning BGT, personally I never saw that coming.
Not sure I'd count RATM really, after the weeks of hype about the campaign. We didn't know till the last minute it would succeed of course, but that's not quite the same as out of the blue. I'd agree 'Spectrum' and 'Beneath Your Beautiful' are the obvious ones in recent years, possibly 'Viva La Vida' as well?
Oh and who could forget Adele's Someone Like You. I certainly didn't expect it to rise to #1 off the back of her performance :o

I would dispute 'Feel The Love', I know very few people on here thought it'd be #1 but I certainly had a good feeling it might be from its pre-orders (the same feeling I get from Duke Dumont's track that BuzzJack actually agrees with this time and incidentally also Rudimental's new track). 'Promises' also seemed like a likely #1, I thought it'd get a much more convincing top spot instead of a default one on <50k. I agree with the other 3 though, the latter if only for the fact that anything other than 'Live While We're Young' was an out of the blue #1 that week :P

Would also add Coldplay - Paradise, NEVER saw that benefiting anywhere near as much as it did from the gift card boost.

Jessie J feat. B.o.B - Price Tag was one that seemed like it'd get an okay debut and maybe climb to #1 later but never seemed like an instant #1.

I personally can't remember much from 2001 but I know a lot of people have said 'Whole Again' was a huge shock because it didn't receive much airplay in the build up to its release - plus it followed a load of flop singles.

I did.

Crazy Frog - Axel F

Tomcraft - Loneliness

Blazin Squad - Crossroads

Oasis - The Hindu Times

Bob The Builder - Mambo No 5

Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter (my birthday #1 )

Bowie. Went to be Sunday night thinking that he would never make another record again and with 24 hours he was no. 1 on iTunes with a brand new song.
Oasis - The Hindu Times

I fail to see how anyone who's followed music in the last 20 years didn't see this one coming.

The song wasn't an official #1 though...

Another one for me was Jason Derulo-In My Head.
