Jason Derulo has confirmed that the first single from his upcoming 3rd studio album will be 'The Other Side' and will be released on the 16th April 2013 in the US! Apparently it is "a pop-rock Ryan Tedder-style ballad" but I'm not sure if that is true or not.

I like his music but isn't he more pop than r&b?

Well I did a search to see which forum his past threads are in and it turned out that they were all in here. So that's why I created it in the R&B forum.

First album was REALLY good, second album was the worst album I've ever bought (and I buy ALOT of albums). Just full of generic, predictable r'n'b/dance songs with no hooks.

 

This single better be good.

I'm interested in hearing what he's going to come up with this time around. I really liked four singles from his first era, and only one from his second era. I hope he can get it right this time because when he does, it's amazing.

Everything that I heard from Future History except for "Breathing" was awful, Jason DeRülo was a surprisingly good début though! "Undefeated" was good also, whatever happened to that? I can't say this is a release that I'm exactly anticipating though...

Meh. It's alright. It'll probably go in at #8 and fall straight down the charts after that. The album probably won't be very successful either. We'll see.

Generic but not quite the horrible listening experience that was 'Don't Wanna Go Home'. I think it'll do well.

Ooft! Welcome BACK Jason Derulo!! It is generic (VERY) but we all know that I'm the biggest sucker for generic pop songs so there's no surprise really! Really pleased he went to do this sound as opposed to trying another dance/pop/rnb album, which didn't work too well for him ('Breathing' aside).

I can't believe how amazing this is, I've been playing it non stop!

Well tbh I've never been a huge fan of JD'd music tbh. 'Whatcha Say' was a below-average debut single and his two UK #1s are nothing to boast about either - 'In My Head' was pretty decent but 'Don't Wanna Go Home' was an abomination and JD should be lucky Cher Lloyd released the turd that was 'Swagger Jagger', otherwise he would've had the worst #1 of 2011. The one factor that has made me give this new song a chance is the TUNE that is 'Ridin' Solo'. Now that was amazing!

 

So yeah, gave 'The Other Side' a listen and it is actually pretty decent. At the moment, it's probably in the same territory as 'In My Head', rather than 'Ridin' Solo' but it's still pretty good on first listen.

 

Two, albeit petty, things that do annoy me though about the song are:

 

1) The instrumental seems to rip off Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream'.

 

2) "sparks fly like the fourth of July" seems to rip-off 'Firework'. (and I know she hasn't copyrighted the "4th July" part but since the instrumental rips off KP, I couldn't help but think it).

 

But what I do love about it is that it clearly has an anthem vibe. If DWGH can get to #1, this should too.
