April 10, 201312 yr Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground and "No Good Advice" I've always considered their first single, Sound of the Underground, as the lead single from their debut album - it's a winners single, but it's not a cover like the X Factor ones today (which I don't consider lead singles).
April 10, 201312 yr Well "Sound of the Underground" wasn't recorded with the intention of the album sounding like that, they were going to go in a completely different direction with the album before it blew up. In this situation I think "No Good Advice" classes as the lead, although I'm not saying that "Sound of the Underground" had no part in the success of the album.

April 10, 201312 yr 50 Cent 'Ayo Technology'/'Curtis' Jessie J 'Do It Like A Dude'/'Who You Are' La Roux 'In For The Kill'/'La Roux' Robbie Williams 'Bodies'/'Reality Killed The Video Star' Shayne Ward 'If That's OK With You'/'Breathless' Westlife 'What About Now'/'Where We Are' These are all the examples I can find of first single + album both peaking at #2 since 2007. Of course for Jessie and La Roux the second single got to #1.
April 10, 201312 yr It depends on whether you consider the lead single to be the first single of a campaign or the single before the album (in case there are 2 or more songs released before it). Shakira's Whenever Wherever and Laundry Service both peaked at #2, I'm not sure if it was the lead single though.
April 10, 201312 yr Author The lead single for me is the first single released from an album even if the album doesn't exist when the single is being released and comes months later. Edited April 10, 201312 yr by AnthonyT
April 10, 201312 yr And for a pair of number two's to be considered "unlucky" is laughable. Most artists would do almost anything to be that "unlucky"
April 10, 201312 yr Generally, I see the first single released from the album as the lead single, but sometimes there are exceptions such as if the first single was a soundtrack theme (i.e Madonna's Die Another Day from American Life), is a reality TV winner's single (but like I say, I see Girls Aloud's SOTU as the lead since it wasn't a cover) or if the first single was released something like a year before album release, e.g. Labrinth's Let the Sun Shine was single #1, but I see Earthquake as the lead single. There's been a big debate on this a year or so ago, I can remember.
April 10, 201312 yr Sash! perhaps? not sure where the first two albums peaked but he had plenty of No2 singles

It's a bit obvious what Tony means by 'unlucky' (unlucky to miss #1 for those who don't understand).

April 10, 201312 yr For the record, I usually classify the single immediately released before (or on) the album's release date to be the 'lead single', purely because the album was released with the promotion usually concentrated on the latest single! If this is the case, then I'd count 'Sound Of The Underground'/'No Good Advice'. I can't actually think of any others off the top of my head!

April 10, 201312 yr OK, on reading it back perhaps my post wasn't put in the best possible manner and for that I apologise. The point stands however that the English language is often butchered here on Buzzjack and people are supposed to be able to interpret what other people meant to say rather than what they actually did say!

I do agree that around here reality is often perceived and described by chart obsessives and loons in warped terms and my thread title is consistent with Buzzjack standards of exaggeration.
