Interesting discussion, I definitely think things are gonna move to streaming, it's kind of a shame but at the same time it has its benefits

maybe the UK Chart is waiting until streaming revenue surpass singles download revenue.....

At the current rate of growth, streaming revenue will surpass singles download revenue in the USA in about 10 months.

Streaming: $1,032.8 million USD (up 59%)

Singles Download: $1,623.6 million USD (up 6.7%)

Album Download: $1,204.8 million USD (up 12.5%)

Physical CD Album: $2,532 million USD (down 18.3%)

no idea when it might happen in the UK.

I doubt it'll ever happen. It's been a sales only chart for over 60 years and I really can't see them changing that any time soon.
For older people who were around when CD singles were big, which year would you compare that for the state of the download market right now?

look at the evolution of music consumption. Streaming is the next stage.

UK Chart could do something like this:

1 sales = 1 point

100 on-demand streams = 1 point

Possibly about 1997 when the singles market was last at its peak. Perhaps even 1998 when overall market sales were still high but sales needed to reach the top 5, top 10, top 20 etc started to decline.

So we should potentially start seeing crap sales in 2017/2018 then? How exciting.

Very deserved #1 (for once ). Such an addictive song.

I guess back in 2011 Love the Way You Lie would've been the all-time #1, as all the songs ahead of it are newer.

I haven't really used the streaming services , is there a way to save the albums or playlists with paid subscriptions services ? when you don't have access to 3G/4G network or internet for that matter like on International Flights , wifi signal in airplanes right now don't allow for much streaming
I stream on my laptop. Not on my phone because it costs money to do that.

But do you stream when you fly if internet is possible ? what do you do if its not ?

I think digital sales will reach a peak either this year or next year - after this a stable period followed by a slow decline is the most likely outcome. Streaming is going to become an ever more attractive means of consuming music, especially with super fast broadband and 4G being rolled out over the middle part of this decade.

On Spotify you can sync tracks offline, which means you can listen to them without an Internet connection. I've currently got a few hundred tracks synced offline on my phone, which I listen to when I'm away from a free Internet connection. So if I was on a plane or something I could be playing the songs I synced offline on Spotify.

But do you stream when you fly if internet is possible ? what do you do if its not ?

No. I dont fly anywhere - no money to go anywhere.

Even if I did it wouldn't effect me that much. I dont consume all of my music through streaming - maybe 10% at the moment as I have loads of mp3s on my phone, my computer and my mp3 player that I listen to mostly.

Even then, I dont really like listening to music while flying.

I think I agree with one of the previous posters - it'll probably even out but I doubt the download will die out like the CD single has. Spotify etc is all very well and good for those that are zooming around with hi-tech high speed connections all the time but it'd need to be much more accessible/appealing before it had any kind of effect. The most that I use it for is just to enter competitions that artists I like set up (e.g. Send us your playlist of summer hits for a chance to meet us) or to see if an album I'm sat on the fence about is worth my time and investment in a full copy - to take a recent example I listened to Mark Owen's new album on there before I brought it.

But what about in years to come when we all have super fast connections wherever we go? Streaming will be much more convenient then.
