I'd still contend that the majority of people who illegally download a song will do so whether the song is On Air/On Sale or not.

I ONLY buy off iTunes if a song is available immediately, otherwise I just look for it elsewhere. I'm sure plenty of people do the same.

There's obviously some people that do a bit of both, but most people I know illegally download absolutely everything (so having the songs available earlier wouldn't make those people decide to download the songs earlier, which is what I think he means).

 

But I do think having songs available earlier would give a song higher sales (assuming it still gets the same radio support, etc.) because there are some songs that some people are already tired of by the time they're released, and there are some people who do illegally download if they desperately want a song and it's not out yet.

 

On another note, Miguel features on two songs in the top 100 of UK iTunes. Never thought I'd see the day. :cry:

Omg only just saw Bust Your Windows so high :wub: Thank you The Voice! Obviously won't hold up enough for an official top 40 place, but as one of my favourite R&B songs of all time it finally charting is great (I don't think it did before?) :D

This old chestnut again. Not every song gets that chance, radio are very quick to drop songs off playlists if they don't grow fast enough, hence why it's a strategy that doesn't work for every single release.

I think the only old chesnuts here are record company executives who hold back songs for 7 weeks & uk radio, especially global/Bauer radio who won't play songs until they become hits!

 

Yes the strategy doesn't work for EVERY release but since the start of this yeAr especially its becoming clear how out of date holding back releases for 7 weeks is becoming especially for artists like Chris. As someone already said I thought it would sell over 100k this week and only be beaten by DP who are selling stellar amounts each week but it is just about seemingly hitting the top 3!

I love it! :wub: Appropriate that it gets released on the hottest day of the year so far too. :D I don't know how well it can do though. Maybe similar success to her sound-alike, Ariana Grande's recent single.

To be fair, with Global it's just the particular stations (Capital FM and Heart FM). Choice FM is a Global station too and it plays loads of songs that aren't chart hits, and it plays some songs really early too (e.g. it's been playing Same Love by Macklemore since about February or March).

ISTM the blame is about 50/50 - half against the pirates, and half against the record companies for holding back songs already available elsewhere...
