I'm at the point now where I have FAITH this season is going to be the one to bring DW back, properly. With Capaldi they have a chance to revamp the show, but do it in a natural way. I don't think they will go down the route of him being 'bad', but he'll obviously be more serious and sullen than Matt. I think it'll end up being comparable to Eccleston actually, a more world (or worlds) weary middle man as opposed to the youthful exuberance of Matt, which is it a good direction to go with (as long as he isn't as irksome as Eccleston).

That's pretty much bang on, I wanted to say earlier, I just couldn't string the sentences together, and I gave up.

If its like Eccleston's series, it will be amazing. That series has had the best overall quality since returning. "Dalek" in particular was a standout moment. Series 4 is probably the only other series which comes close to it - thanks mostly to the amazing Tenant and Tate partnership!

Series 6 >>>>>>>>> Series 7 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Series 1 > Series 4 > Series 5 > Series 2 >>>>>> Series 3

Although, series 7 contains THE WORST episode EVER (Rings of Akaten).

Agreed.

Wait was series 7 with the singing girl? Oh my god

Some pretty atrocious series. The greatest by a TExan country mile is the first with Eccelston, me fave doctor, and Rose and Captain Jack. The two highlights were the Dalek/ BAd Wolf episode and also the Mummy? episodes.

Oh my fod which was the series with tha awful Olympics episode?

The singing girl was Rings of Akaten in Series 7. The Olympics episode was Series 2 with the awful Tenant and Piper love affair dominating! :puke:

Oh god then both 7 and 2 were particularly awful. As was that one with Martha Jones and that unbelievably cheesy episode in which David Tennent transformed into Dobby.

I think S1 was perhaps a little too ''serious'', it didn't always sit well with the way the show portrayed things and at times I felt Eccleston was acting in a different show. Billie Piper was the shining light of that season, really.

Season 2 was great, Tennant was fresh and exciting and not too bogged down in the 'oh, i'm so complex with all my FEELINGS' mumbo jumbo that tarnished his last episodes, Season 3 was rendered meritless by the utterly vile Martha.

Season 4 is by far my favourite. It had the strongest stories, best pairing of leads, strongest sense of direction and purpose and a great balance between comedy and drama. It's one of the best seasons of any show, ever, for my money.

I really liked 5 and 6 too, Matt is my favourite 'new' Doctor because of the sly sense of humour, the geeky/childlike excitement and Matt just fitted the role absolutely perfectly and he could switch between the frivolous and serious stuff with aplomb too, which is often a point of error for lots of shows.

Season 7 was a disaster. 7.0 was fine, a few brilliant episodes (and a piss weak episode), but was saved by the extremely emotional final hurrah for Amy and Rory. 7.5 was just a complete mess though, I've watched it all back since it aired and there isn't a single episode I would rank above 'good' bar The Name Of The Doctor and Rings of Akhaten is among the worst the show has done since it came back (challenged mainly by A Town Called Mercy). The 50th special and the Christmas Special were both glorious though (if counted along with that season) round it out considerably.

The show has always struggled to find the right balance between the high concept/arc heavy and the episodic/baddie of the week style episodes. For all his faults RTD did a decent job of balancing the two, although there are of course some utter atrocities along the way, the one with Peter Kay being a particular nadir. Moffat on the other hand is excellent at writing female characters (River, Amy, Clara, Kate, The TARDIS) but often the episodes feel like they haven't been properly filled in because they've spent all their time on the big finale or the overall arc and forgotten that we need to be kept entertained in the interim.

So yeah:

S4>S2>S6>S5>S1>S7.0>S3>S7.5

4 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 5 >>>>>>> 4 Specials >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 7 >>>>> 6

Series 6 just made me lose the huge interest I had in Who before that. :( Way too confusing and just not good *entertainment* on a Saturday night. The fun has been lost. :(

Series 3 is getting a bit of a bad rap here. I know Martha isn't great but I thought the overall story arc was the most well crafted so far with pretty much everything tying in. Series 7 was by far the worst but that's when I can work out which series everything belongs to since they split them all these days. I want a run of 13 episodes without a break please.

S3>S4>S1>S5>S2>S6>S7

Good as I was completely confused by which season was which and forgot the storylines by the time it came back.
We're getting a straight 13 episode run this time I think (and hope)

There's only 12 episodes in the series (sadly), but then there might be the Christmas special as well tagged on the end to make the 13th episode?

I'd guess either that or the feature length opener will be classed as 13, either way a straight run is better.
It's hard to care when it's split. It loses momentum so I'm happy if it's a straight run.
I think split seasons, in theory, are great. A few US shows did it this season past and it really re-invigorated the story telling and lead to much less filler. The problem with S7 of this is that they ended up having 2/3 filler episodes out of a 5/6 episode run, which is a terrible ratio and made the whole thing seem like a slap in the face.
