I always thought Stay by Hurts didn't chart anywhere near as high as it should have. I always think if it had been written or sung by a band like Take That it would have charted similarly to Rule the World. I'm hoping maybe someone will sing it on X Factor and give it the recognition it deserves.

Not wanting to turn this thread really grim, but there's always the "death effect" to take into consideration. Can't think of any possible examples, but there must be some lyrically perfect songs which under-performed that could be come hits (like 'Man in the Mirror' and 'Back to Black').

Has God Save the Queen ever charted? (traditional, not the Sex Pistols...). If so, I think that could go off in the way of Ding Dong when Elizabeth does pop her clogs.

It'd be a little awkward if Like a Virgin gets its peak when Madonna dies. That or Girl Gone Wild. :o

Leona Lewis, Glassheart

yes, amazing track!

also, Marina & The Diamonds - how to be a heartbreaker

These songs generally need to be known for this to work.

I say it every time but "Good Riddance" is just waiting for it. Would be nice for it to belatedly beat its #11 peak and be the first top 10 single for Green Day since 2006.

I agree. It's usually well-known songs that get big boosts from TV performances and re-enter the charts.

Kind of a recent example, but I can see Lights by Ellie Goulding re-entering the chart and getting a new peak one day. Although it's usually ballad and adult contemporary songs that have the best chance of doing this.

Kanye West ft T-Pain - Good Life. This peaked 22 places too low in my opinion.

I agree it charted surprisingly low, but the only way I can see it re-entering is if it's used on an advert. It's not going to get performed on X Factor or anything!

There was an OCC report about 'God Save the Queen' being released for the first time, not sure if it ever charted.

I'd expect 'Like a Virgin' to return to the Top 40, don't think it would be first choice of tribute song! :P I imagine her "tribute song" (i.e like 'Back to Black' and 'Man in the Mirror' were) would be 'Crazy for You' or 'The Power of Goodbye'.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow should be a big hit for someone after an XF or BGT performance, preferably the Eva Cassidy version.

I doubt it. It's been covered by Laura White and Stacey Solomon on XF in the past and neither did much for the song.

Leona Lewis covered it in 2006 but, while I think her performance would've made the song shoot up iTunes, it was before downloads could have an impact on the charts.

If it had been sung by Take That it would have been a success, that's because it would have been sung by a decent singer.

Hurts' write decent songs, the instrumental and production are getting better, but the singer's voice is still awful.

It'll never happen, but wouldn't it be good if 'Shall We Take a Trip' by Northside hit the top 10 one day? Guess the only way it could would be if it were used as the theme to a hit show.

With that in mind, maybe the second series of Moone Boy will finally give 'Where's me Jumper' by Sultans of Ping FC the Top 40 placing it deserved.

Really?? I think Theo has a lovely voice. It sounds beautiful singing Help from their album Exile especially. I guess it's all subjective - it'd be pretty boring if we all liked the same things.
