76. CARTOON HEROES- Aqua (132,000)

Another lead track here, this time from Aqua’s second album “Aquarius”. It became the biggest selling single of 2000 in their native Denmark (narrowly beating DJ Aligator (No 87)) but overall the second album failed to launch in the UK and by the end of that year the groups chart days were behind them.

I'll probably get a beating for this from certain quarters but this is an outstanding song - amazingly feel good and still hits the spot after 13 years.

So in the ultra pop charts of the late 90s The Cartoons were, sadly, not that an unusual act. Hailing from Denmark they donned plastic outfits and saw themselves in the top 10 twice that year, this was their second hit and is essentially a cover of the folk song “Camptown Races”.

After some years in the chart wilderness Jones agreed to do an album of (mostly) covers with then “current” acts to revitalise his career, a move which proved a success when “Reload” sold over a million copies. The first single to be released was this cover of Talking Heads 1983 single which bombed here though made the top 10 in the US and featured The Cardigans for whom it turned into their last top 10 hit here though lead singer Persson of course did go back there courtesy of the Manic Street Preachers in 2007.

Whilst “Take On Me” is remembered for its innovative video the black and white animation featured in the promo for this track was actually constructed before that video and was the inspiration for TOM. Released as the bands third single it continues the same stylistic themes from the first two singles but failed to match the sales of those tracks.

Certainly have to ride the rough with the smooth here, it swings from the sublime (Robyn, Tim Berg) to the hideous (Alda, Doctors). "Dancing On My Own" and "Seek Bromance" are the highlights for me - a real bummer the funky house classic from Stonebridge is a no-show, proof how dire sales were in 2004. Wasn't this the year where 10,000 sales often secured a top ten placing?

"Crying At The Discotheque" was a bit of a guilty pleasure for me at the time - 2001 was the year I came out and this outrageously camp anomaly emerged! I subsequently bought it on vinyl...

Also I had no idea Jose Gonzalez was Nordic!

Cartoons were awful, they wasn't even good in a bad/cheesy way imo -_-

Meanwhile in Aqua land we were all dressing up as pirates! Yes after a hat-trick of No 1 singles this song was widely expected to be a chart topping contender, the week it was released it was up against the Spice Girls and some anticipated a close chart battle. In the end it was a bit of anti climax when it entered at No 6 with sales well below the usual opening salvo’s for the group.

69. COLLIDE- Leona Lewis/ Avicii (141,000)

Originally intended for Lewis’ third album “Glassheart” it was of course the centre of a sampling row when Avicii’s track “Fade Into Darkness” was sampled on the track by Syco without getting permission. Before any legal proceedings could be issued Avicii was given a co-credit and also earned a place on this rundown for his trouble!

On their third album by 2006, Swedish trio PBJ roped into former Concretes front woman Victoria Bergsman and scored a No 33 hit with this first time around. Promoted again in 2007 it was a much bigger success and is of course in our lives daily now thanks to its continued use on adverts for “Homebase”

If only it was "Fade Into Darkness" that had done well, the vocalist and lyrics on that song are much better than what Leona could do. :(

75. ERASE/ REWIND- The Cardigans (135,000)

One of my favourite Cardigans track along with Lovefool

73. DOODAH- The Cartoons (137,000)

I'm assuming Witch Doctor is yet to come :D

Great to see "Young Folks" and "My Oh My" here. :D And LOL at seeing "Collide" here, but I'm not bashing the song. More the circumstances why!
68. YOUNG FOLKS- Peter, Bjorn & John Featuring Bergman (147,000)

Love this one, always sounded so unique  I get excited when I hear the whistling on the radio, but of course they would never play this these days :(

I also love this song - it's one of the best songs ever in my opinion!

Victoria Bergsman later returned to the top 40 as Taken By Trees with her cover of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' for the John Lewis ad. Fun fact.
