Just a few days after Denmark achieved its 3rd Eurovision victory in Malmo, 2 cities have announced to bid next year's Eurovision Song Contest. Copenhagen and Herning are both bidding to host Europe's favourite musical extravaganza.

Copenhagen is the hot favourite to win the bid, taking into account that the majestic Danish capital has an international airport with connections to most of the European capitals, a good transport system and has hosted the contest twice before in 1964 and in 2001. We must also add that the city is well prepared to welcome delegations, journalists and fans as it has many hotels. The possible venue if Copenhagen wins the bid would be none other the Parken Stadium, where the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest was held. Copenhagen has also got several other venues that could play host to the event next year: the Forum Arena, which hosted the 50th anniversary Eurovision Song Contest Congratulations show and the Ballerup Arena which hosted the 2011 Danish Eurovision national final.

Another city which has announced its bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest next year is Herning, which hosted the 2013 Danish Eurovision national final. The Jysken Boxen Arena where Emmelie won the golden ticket to Malmo will be venue for the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest if Herning is selected as the host city.

DR, the Danish national broadcaster has not made a decision yet neither on the venue or host city. At the moment 2 cities have bid to host the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, will there be any more cities entering the race? DR, the Danish national broadcaster has already kicked off preparations for the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest and has announced there will be an open process to select the 2014 Eurovision host city. Bids from all the cities wishing to host the event will be studied and evaluated along with their respective venues and infrastructure.

Which city would you prefer to be the host of the 2014 contest?

Copenhagen as long as we're guaranteed that it won't be on a 2001 scale (and with them trying to tone down the contest a bit I don't imagine it would be).

Yeah I assume there is a way they can just use half of the Parken Stadium if they wanted too and Copenhagen is bound to have the best transport links and infrastructure. I've read that for Herning to host, they will have to work with Aarhus to provide the hotel capacity needed for all of the people that will be in the city during the Eurovision weeks.
I'd wager they'll go with Copenhagen but one of the smaller arenas like the Ballerup if they want the same kind of atmosphere Malmo had.
I'd REALLY rather it was held in Aarhus or Copenhagen :(
Herning would be awful, I definitely won't be going if it's there. I can't even find any cheap-ish hotels in the area :/ Copenhagen would be cool but I'm not DYING to go like I always was before as I want to be the sort of person that goes once every few years so the novelty is still there (and preferably visiting different countries as opposed to the one I just went to!).

I'm hoping it is Copenhagen although tbh Herning wouldn't bother me too much either (I'd prefer Copenhagen). I am planing on camping rather than staying in a hotel as a week at a campsite in Køge, 40mins on the train from the centre of Copenhagen, is just £78 for a week! My family stayed their way back in 1998 and it was a good site. I also have a good campsite between Esbjerg and Herning.

I'm going to get the Ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg for about the same price as a flight! (And I can bring home more CDs)

Unlike last year when I said I'd 'totally' go I actually have the funds to do it this year and I bloody LOVE Denmark!

I have an ACTUAL NEED to go next year after missing Malmö, and given I'll have GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT by then I'm a near cert to go if it's in Copenhagen. But if it's in Herning it's all off - I'm NOT spending half my ANNUAL WAGE tracking down a hotel in the middle of bloody nowhere for the privilege of going to what would almost certainly be the worst Eurovision ever for the fan experience (given fan experience barely EXISTED back at Millstreet)

I stayed in a hostel in Copenhagen last week for about £75, it was pretty snazzy too, surprising for a hostel, I gave it a very good review on Booking.com, very impressed! How much is the ferry exactly? My return flights cost about £70. Would be quite an experience going by ferry though definitely, I wouldn't rule out giving that a go! I say every year that I'll go whenever it ends up west of the Balkans, but this year I thought that it was about time that I actually made good on my promise to myself! It's 50/50 whether I go next year I think there are a number of things I want to do career-wise and they'll need money pumping into them so I may not be able to afford them :( I bought 12 CD's over there and fit them all into my case!

Also, I'm not sure how much better it can get than Malmo! The Swedes are OBSESSED with Eurovision and it made the whole atmosphere so incredible, when I arrived back in Copenhagen about an hour after the contest finished there was NO atmosphere, and Emmelie had less than a page devoted to her win in the main newspaper BT on Sunday. Had Robin won for Sweden you just know that half of Aftonbladet would have been about it. Denmark seem to have a similar attitude to the contest to the UK, maybe a little more favourable (at least they HAVE a proper national final).

Well it's an overnight ferry and for a car and 2 people it's £131 per person and that includes a room for the night. Plus you don't have to buy baggage allowance or get restricted by what you bring back.

I imagine that would be more expensive if the contest was in Copenhagen as opposed to across the border. If I drive I could make a trip to Malmö/Sweden as well!

I reckon they could put on a pretty good show. Plus I haven't been to Denmark in forever!

I can't quite imagine what the UK's reaction would be if we won Eurovision in the next few years. Could our government be even bothered to host it?

Admittedly I only took a little case that counted as hand luggage so I had to make sure that I didn't buy anything big. I took very little with me though so had plenty of space left :D Yeah I guess so, although the toll is really expensive in a car (£40 one way!), on the train it's only about £18 return from Copenhagen to Malmö. The Danish road system threw me completely, and there are cyclists EVERYWHERE so I'd be too nervous to drive! Oh yeah I'm sure they will, 2001 was a great contest imo, even if the arena of 38,000 felt a little TOO big, but at least it would be relatively easy to get tickets. And considering their interval act in 2001 was Aqua/Safri Duo, I'd be intrigued to see who they pick in 2014, they're a very POP country.

I can't quite imagine what the UK's reaction would be if we won Eurovision in the next few years. Could our government be even bothered to host it?

We'd absolutely host it but it would be a very muted contest in terms of fan experience I'm sure. Nobody would know that it was even going on in the chosen arena until they got through the doors, whereas in Malmö you knew all about it the minute you walked off the train and onto the station concourse! Barely anybody here would give a toss though. Contrary to popular belief, I think we're actually one of the countries MOST likely to win in the next few years. Sure 2nd-10th place is quite often filled with the same old diaspora aided countries like Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Greece but the winner is nearly always that one big standout contemporary pop song which rises above everything else.

The UK could quite easily send a song like that if the BBC got their act together. But they forget that it's a SONG contest. It doesn't matter if we send Blue, Engelbert, Bonnie or any other 'had success in other countries x years ago' type acts who are relying on some long lost fanbase to vote for their limp album track. We'd be better sending an unknown singer with a killer song, or a singer with some success but whatever, the SONG is key, not the artist. Who outside of Eurovision following circles had honestly heard of Alexander Rybak, Lena, Loreen or Emmelie De Forest before? Sure those artists helped to sell their songs with their charisma and individuality, but the songs were all top notch. I'm not convinced that even Adele would win if she was singing some non-song. We need to be the country to find that incredible 'moment' that generally comes once a year (but didn't in 2008 and 2011, hence the default diaspora aided winners) and we could quite easily win again. Blue was a step in the right direction (song wise, I wouldn't have picked them as the artist), but we've taken two steps backwards since.

I would like it to be in Copenhagen please as I'm already dying to go back. I agree it wasn't nearly as excitable about the contest as Malmo, but in all other respects I much preferred Copen - so relaxed and charming and ahhhh I wish I was there right now.

Aalborg are likely to join the race to host the 2014 contest. From ESC Xtra:

Danmarks Radio (DR) has announced today that the city of Aalborg may join the capital Copenhagen and the central Jylland city of Herning in the bid for host city duties for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.

The likely venue, Gigantium is an 8,000+ seat venue which regularly hosts concerts and sporting events, and previously hosted the Danish preselection, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in 2012.

DR has also recently appointed Pernille Gaardbo as the chief of the host broadcaster’s organising committee for next year’s contest.

Also, the participation rules have been lightened. From ESC Xtra:

It has been announced by the EBU that any countries wishing to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest are no longer expected to broadcast the previous year’s contest, a rule which has previously been a compulsory requirement.

The rule change was confirmed via the official EBU twitter account this morning in response to rumours that Turkey would be automatically disqualified from next year’s contest should they wish to participate due to their decision not to broadcast this year’s grand final. "This rule used to apply but no longer does. Turkey would be welcome at #Eurovision 2014"

39 countries participated in this year’s contest won by Denmark with a victory of 281 pts. Several countries have already confirmed participation for next year with more expected to follow.

Great news for Norwegians :magic:

Fredericia are the fourth city to bid to host the 2014 contest! From ESC Today:

Fredericia, will be joining Copenhagen, Herning and Aalborg in the race to become the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest host city.

The six municipalities of Fredericia have agreed to put the ticket in on the huge media event. "It is not yet clear what are the requirements and conditions to hold the Eurovision Song Contest. But we have agreed to join the race" says the mayor of Fredericia, Kenny Bruun Olsen.

Fredericia's large convention center, MesseC, can accommodate more than 8000 spectators, including the stage and all the television equipment are required- the mayor of Fredericia has added.

"Fredericia in terms of hotels has the 2nd biggest hotel capacity in the country. In contrast, our infrastructure and central location is clearly the best in the country" says Kenny Bruun Olsen. "Then of course Triangle area houses Melodi Grand Prix here in Fredericia" he says.

The mayor has no doubt that the necessary funds required to host such a magnificent event can be raised. This will showcase both the city and the region, not forgetting the massive advertising impact and positive media attention it will receive if it hosts the Eurovision Song Contest.

Which city will host the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest? Copenhagen? Aalborg? Herning? or Frediricia? The race is on. DR, the Danish national broadcaster is yet to evaluate all applications and bids and then make a deliberation.

Oh wow! I'm pretty much only going to somehwere where there are cheap hotels and lots to do! I'm not the sort of person to travel that far just for a 3 hour event and go straight back home, I need something to see in the local area!
Tbh I think they should just go with Copenhagen. It has everything and it's easier for everyone. Fans can stay in Roskilde/Malmö/Lund if they don't want to have Copenhagen prices.
So it'll be Copenhagen or Herning next year. http://escxtra.com/2013/05/copenhagen-and-...o-bid-for-2014/

I almost certainly won't go if it's in Herning, are there even any hotels for cheap round there? Copenhagen would be the obvious and best option!

Already booked a hotel in Copenhagen :funky:Herning has six hotels apparently, two of which are massively expensive, four of which are shit

I feel like I ought to actually go to Eurovision one of these years. Although it would be a far easier decision if the contest was being hosted in Ireland or the UK.

How much do the tickets cost for Eurovision? Do they sell out insanely fast? (Are the tickets for next year already sold out? :P)

Defo got no probs with going to Copenhagen again next year - beautiful city, it's peaceful yet charismatic.

As have I provisionally but not sure if I'll use it. Good god if its in Herning, hardly any fans would be able to go!

I have decided to drive and camp in Denmark. Not entirely sure on the Ferry cost but I think I can stay for a week for £300 before fuel.
