May 31, 201312 yr And Bray, I think you're talking about shadow2009 and not Eric. :kink: Correct. I'm just used to it being Eric making outlandish statements. And I can't read I posted about the last non-XF/charity/RATM 200k+ seller the other day - it was Michael Andrews and Gary Jules :P Edited May 31, 201312 yr by Bré
May 31, 201312 yr 'Fight For This Love' I think, although Cheryl was a reality TV star - whether you count that or not, up to you - so I think the one before that must have been 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'. I think Bre posted something about it the other day. EDIT He's pointed it out above me  Edited May 31, 201312 yr by Oliver

And I can't read I posted about the last non-XF/charity/RATM 200k+ seller the other day - it was Michael Andrews and Gary Jules :P I personally wouldn't count Andrews & Jules as they were only selling that much because of the 'Christmas #1 Battle'. So I'm guessing the last song to sell 200k purely on merit would've been Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head or Shaggy's It Wasn't Me if Kylie didn't sell 200k (I don't remember)

May 31, 201312 yr Amazing to see 'Little Talks' back in the Top 15 :D Really shows what it could've done if it had more exposure first time round
May 31, 201312 yr Amazing to see 'Little Talks' back in the Top 15 :D Really shows what it could've done if it had more exposure first time round I would say that it had as much exposure as it could have had the first time round, but it's a shame that it takes a talent show for the British public to open their eyes to good music...

May 31, 201312 yr FFTL sold 292k because it was Cheryl and a cracking song, not because she was on Popstars the Rivals.
May 31, 201312 yr ^ And because she had the benefit of performing it on X-Factor the week it was released.
May 31, 201312 yr And also because she was a judge on The X Factor, which gave her a massive promotion advantage.

Sales weren't inflated by charity/talent shows. Yes, sales are higher at Christmas but they always have been. People were hardly buying it to keep another track off no.1 in a RATM manner.

People were hardly buying it to keep another track off no.1 in a RATM manner. I wasn't around at the time so I don't have an expert opinion, but surely sales are higher when there's a "OMG The Darkness vs Mad World for Xmas #1 go buy ur fave". Not just that, but Mad World was featured on the soundtrack of Donnie Darko. Film has been known to boost a songs sales (see My Heart Will Go On, Everything I Do (I Do It For You) etc.)
June 1, 201312 yr Personally, I don't think these kinds of comparisons can really be made, as to choosing which songs "don't count" because of various reasons. There are always factors which affect a single's sales, and you're never going to get an accurate comparison unless you choose two songs which had no airplay, no performances, no exposure, no promotion and so on... Which let's face it, has never happened, because the whole reason singles get to number 1 is usually because of those things. Different songs get different levels of exposure and get different sales. Also, a few years ago it was a lot harder to get a song you liked for free than it is now, so I think high sales nowadays are more impressive than they used to be - I'd say Robin Thicke selling 180k in 2013 is a greater achievement than somebody selling 200k in 2003, so comparing them is a bit pointless. But then, I guess it gives people some pleasure to argue about it, so by all means carry on

You've really explained it perfectly! :D I can understand discounting X Factor/charity when doing these last records to sell over x amount, but any other time, there's no point making something sound less impressive than it actually is for whatever reason.

Film has been known to boost a songs sales (see My Heart Will Go On, Everything I Do (I Do It For You) etc.) I'm a Kylie fan but Kylie had the benefit of the fictitious rivalry between her & Posh Beckham. It was hardly Blur Vs Oasis but it did get a lot of press coverage - Elton John throwing his two penneth in. Course Posh stumbled to #6 & Kylie sold 306k
