Posted June 2, 201312 yr Nearly one in five of the records that have reached the UK Singles Chart were listed for but a single week, including some that appeareed at relatively high places. They range from a Vera Lynn track that appeared in the first ever UK Chart to the Eurovision winning track from last week's chart (I have purposely excluded records from this week's chart as most of them will re-appear in next week's Top 75) The tracks listed below are those whose fleeting appearances were at the highest positions, split into eras depending on how deep the chart was at the time. (I've taken the view that a single week at number 12 when the chart was only a top 12 isn't particularly significant) As usual, any updates/amendments are gratefully received Top 12 era 7 - 6/6/53 - Dickie Valentine - In A Golden Coach (There's A Heart Of Gold) 8 - 8/5/54 - Jo Stafford - Make Love To Me 9 - 22/11/52 - Al Martino - Take My Heart 9 - 3/10/53 - David Whitfield - The Bridge Of Sighs 10 - 15/11/52 - Vera Lynn - Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart Note - first UK chart, may have sold enough to have featured in an earlier chart had there been one 10 - 10/1/53 - Mills Brothers - The Glow Worm 10 - 17/4/54 - Nat King Cole - Tenderly Top 20 era 9 - 31/12/55 - Johnston Brothers & George Chisholm Sour-Note Six - Join In And Sing Again 13 - 5/2/55 - Mario Lanza - Drnking Song 16 - 11/12/54 - Perry Como - Papa Loves Mambo 16 - 22/1/55 - Max Bygraves - Mr Sandman 16 - 1/10/55 - Sammy Davis Jr - That Old Black Magic 16 - 12/11/55 - Frankie Laine - Humming Bird Top 30 era 22 - 14/4/56 - Johnston Brothers - No Other Love 23 - 5/9/59 - Ray Peterson - The Wonder Of You 23 - 7/11/59 - Ivo Rubic - Morgen 24 - 14/7/56 - Georgia Gibbs - Kiss Me Another 24 - 31/1/59 - Joni James - There Must Be A Way 25 - 23/6/56 - Jimmy Young - Rich Man Poor Man 25 - 20/7/57 - Fats Domino - Valley Of Tears 25 - 22/2/58 - Louis Prima - Buona Sera 25 - 5/7/58 - Renato Carosone & His Sextet - Torero-Cha Cha Cha 25 - 27/11/59 - Paul Evans & The Curls - Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat 25 - 13/2/60 - Elvis Presley - Strictly Elvis (EP) Top 50 era (12/3/60-13/5/78) 33 - 19/3/60 - England Sisters - Heart Beat 33 - 20/2/71 - Edwin Starr - Stop The War Now 36 - 22/3/69 - Small Faces - Afterglow Of You 37 - 27/1/72 - Brook Brothers - He's Old Enough To Know Better 39 - 2/7/60 - Jess Conrad - Cherry Pie 39 - 14/5/66 - Phil Upchurch Combo - You Can't Sit Down 39 - 16/1/71 - Melanie - What Have They Done To My Song Ma 40 - 26/3/60 - Shaye Cogan - Mean To Me 40 - 7/5/60 - John Barry Orchestra - Beat For Beatniks 40 - 14/5/60 - Stan Freberg - Old Payola Roll Blues Note - two in successive weeks 40 - 31/12/60 - Tommy Steele - Must Be Santa 40 - 21/1/61 - Olympics - I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate 40 - 6/2/71 - Grand Funk Railroad - Inside Looking Out Top 75 era (20/5/78 to date) 4 - 31/12/11 - Alex Day - Forever Yours 9 - 23/6/12 - Precision Tunes - Payphone 10 - 16/2/08 - Wet Wet Wet - Weightless 10 - 29/5/10 - Leeds United Team & Supporters - Leeds Leeds Leeds (Marching On Together) Note - a version credited to Leeds United FC and just named Leeds Leeds Leeds spent 3 weeks on chart in 1992 13 - 27/1/96 - Chemical Broithers - Loops Of Fury EP 14 - 18/4/92 - Wedding Present - Silver Shorts 14 - 8/8/09 - John Barrowman - I Made It Through The Rain 15 - 14/4/01 - Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (Live) Note - studio version has over 20 weeks on chart, with a peak of number 2 in 1970 15 - 23/6/07 - Marillion - Thankyou Whoever You Are 15 - 14/4/12 - Alex Day - Lady Godiva 15 - 1/6/13 - Emmelie De Forest - Only Teardrops 16 - 13/6/92 - Wedding Present - California 16 - 24/5/03 - Red 'n' White Machines - Southampton Boys 16 - 10/11/07 - Koopa - The Crash 17 - 19/9/92 - Wedding Present - Love Slave Note: listed as such on the chart, entitled "Loveslave" on the single itself 17 - 17/10/92 - Wedding Present - Sticky 18 - 30/6/07 - Muse - Map Of The Problematique 19 - 15/8/92 - Wedding Present - Boing! 20 - 15/2/92 - Wedding Present - Go-Go Dancer 20 - 5/10/02 - Garbage - Shut Your Mouth 20 - 20/11/10 - Royal British Legion - 2 Minute Silence 21 - 10/3/07 - Ugly Rumours - War 21 - 23/6/07 - Koopa - The One-Off Song For The Summer 21 - 13/6/09 - Pet Shop Boys - Did You See Me Coming? June 2, 201312 yr In the top 75, there are quite a few entries for Alex Day, and Koopa (who are a local band to me, and are all major twats)
June 2, 201312 yr Author They released a limited edition 7" single each month of 1992. If you don't know them, check them out. The B-sides were some quite interesting cover versions. One of Altered Images' "Think That It Might" and another of Julee Cruise's "Falling" were quite excellent
June 2, 201312 yr Yes my screen name is a tribute to the 1992 Hit Parade singles - all of them went T30 and spent only one week in the T40. And if you like indie music you should definitely check them out, just don't start by watching the video for 'Loveslave'! NB: 'Loveslave' is normally written as one word, and the February single is called 'Go-Go Dancer'. Also there's no "E" in 'Loops Of Fury', if you see what I mean.
June 2, 201312 yr My husband is or was a major fan. When we met he insisted on playing their records. I said "but all their songs sound the same" and he brought out an album and I'm sure it was called "All our songs sound the same." :D

I've made the "Go-Go Dancer" & "Loops Of Fury" changes in my database. Most of the sources I have re "Love Slave" list it as two words, including the Music Week chart, and the most recent Virgin book, so I'm reluctant to make that change at present.
June 2, 201312 yr Verka Serduchka got to #28 in the UK chart? :o That must have been higher than the winner 'Molitva'?
June 2, 201312 yr Verka Serduchka got to #28 in the UK chart? :o That must have been higher than the winner 'Molitva'? 'Molitva' was the last winner to not chart at all (not even top 100). Understandable really. I can't say I even vaguely remember how it goes, whereas I can still very clearly recall 'Dancing Lasha Tumbai'.

I said "but all their songs sound the same" and he brought out an album and I'm sure it was called "All our songs sound the same." :D Yes, I've got that one! It was the 10" format of the 3 Songs EP. Thanks. I've made the "Go-Go Dancer" & "Loops Of Fury" changes in my database. Fair point, but here's the original artwork: http://chartarchive.org/artwork/12779-raw.jpg
June 2, 201312 yr Author How about on the label? All my 7" are in storage so I can't get to them until Wednesday to check the original label. I certainly won't be rendering it with a lower case initial "l"!
June 2, 201312 yr I wish I could remember where I put my copy of the Hit Parade CD, which has all the labels in the booklet. But I have checked a couple of the other front covers, and they do have spaces between words so that's not just a design thing. Actually, there are some images on the Discogs page: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1002884
June 2, 201312 yr Author Who's Emmilie? That one was manually edited into a post I already had ready to roll, typing error I'm afraid! Well spotted

I will make an annotation that such variations exist between the record and the chart listing in my database. if it had been on "Hit Parade 1" I could have checked myself but I never got around to purchasing "Hit Parade 2" as I had most of the singles on 7" Edited June 2, 201312 yr by fchd
June 2, 201312 yr Not sure whether your list is unfinished but a few weeks ago Michael Molloy and Alex Evans were at number 38 with 'Rise and Fall' which left the charts the following week. Good song if you've not heard it.
June 2, 201312 yr Author Not sure whether your list is unfinished but a few weeks ago Michael Molloy and Alex Evans were at number 38 with 'Rise and Fall' which left the charts the following week. Good song if you've not heard it. Yeah, once you get past number 30 in the Top 75 era the number begins to get rather large. I originally intended to go to number 40 but called it a day at 30
June 2, 201312 yr The 2001 version of Suspicious Minds spent 4 weeks in the chart: 15-21-39-60. Most of the Elvis re-issues from 2007 did spend one week in the top 20 before dropping out completely. Similarly, Billie's Honey To The Bee had a 17-out run in 2007, but had charted in 1999, and Stereophonics - Dakota had a 29-out run in 2012, but reached #1 in 2005. Billiam - My Generation had a week at #23 in 2008.
