The fact this is even being discussed 5 years on is a strong indication of that.

I think the Kanye West VMA incident is a big part of the reason the video hasn't been forgotten. I personally only remember it because other people constantly insist it's a great video and I don't think they would to anywhere near the same extent if it weren't for Kanye bringing attention to it.

Kanye certainly got what he wanted there anyway, as people definitely still discuss 'Single Ladies' a HELL of a lot more than 'You Belong With Me'

A*M*E - Heartless - DNC

Avicii - Wake Me Up - #1

Avril Lavigne - Here's To Never Growing Up - #12

Breach - Jack - #7

Selena Gomez - Come & Get It - #8

(and not to mention K Koke, Lucy Spraggan and (HOPEFULLY) CHVRCHES might also go top 40)

Poor forgotten Diana Vickers. Pretty much all of these are single pre-orders so expecting to see quite a few songs going straight into the top 50 or so tonight.

EDIT: As Joseph has kindly informed me (again) Diana isn't out for another week. Whatever, like I even know when Diana songs come out.

No it isn't, it's actually a concept. :manson:

It's about her being kidnapped by the mafia and sold as a sex slave.

I can't speak for everyone but I certainly didn't even slightly get this from watching it until I saw it explained so I don't think it was really a very effective concept. 'Telephone' was far better at actually telling a story in an understandable way (which is why it was a much, much better video and I don't see why people even consider 'Bad Romance' good in comparison to it - but as I say, that's just me).

Diana isn't released until next week. I'm sure you thought this a few days ago too! :kink:

The relative simplicity of the 'Single Ladies' video is what made it stand out majorly. Yes, it's just Beyoncé with 2 back up dancers performing a dance routine, shot in black and white. On paper that sounds forgettable, but in fact it's what makes it so memorable. The fact this is even being discussed 5 years on is a strong indication of that. It also became something of a YouTube phenomenon, with numerous copies & parodies being uploaded on a daily basis - that helped to solidify its iconic status. Love or hate it, it is iconic - not only in terms of Beyoncé videos, but in music video history. It'll be remembered and discussed for many years to come.

So glad someone gets where I'm coming from re: Beyonce.

The Bad Romance video is Lady Gaga dancing and posing in different costumes. That's it. Nothing special at all. If a male singer did that video none of you would've looked twice.

Again, completely agree.

Well, Eric is suggesting that most of Buzzjack won't give an artist the time of day if they're male! I suppose the stereotype Griff is picking up on here is "Buzzjack members only like female artists", which is of course a massive generalisation.

I'm not really one to stereotype but I do think there's a slight bias towards female artists on this forum in the sense that if a song by a male artist which was detested on this site was released by a female artist instead, it'll probably be loved. One example that comes to mind is in the Chart Show thread, 'When I Was Your Man' was always incredibly slated whenever it came on and while I don't particularly like the song, I can imagine it being loved if the likes of Alicia Keys sang a female version of it. I guess you could argue it's all down to the vocals but Bruno hardly has an unbearable Adam Levine voice.

But then there is a lot of love for the likes of Kanye, Ed Sheeran, Olly Murs etc and a lot of hate for Jessie J, Cher Lloyd etc.

As much as I'd like to agree with you on this Bre, I don't think that's the case. As someone who tends to watch one of the many music channels every morning before I go to work (wots a raydeo stayshun? :P ) I've seen the video to 'Singles Ladies' a hell of a lot more over the last 5 years than I have 'You Belong With Me'. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen the video to 'YBWM' to be honest.

I'd also say 'Single Ladies' video is far more interesting because it's got the less is more approach. Sometimes it's the simplistic videos that can have the biggest impacts. I guess everyone will have their own opinions on this.

I cant be bothered to individually argue with people here because they are just not worth it (naming no names) but my god, do people talk out of their arse in this thread.

I think you can offer just a teeny bit more credit to the people here to make up their own mind, no?

And with regards to Bad Romance, there is a reason it took the internet by storm, and eventually broke all of those award ceremony records. On the surface it probably is just Gaga dancing around (but of course when Beyoncé just dances around in a video it's so special and really stands out!!1!), but that's ignoring all the film/music/fashion cultural references that are in their too, which i suppose the casual viewer would miss. Pretty sure it wasn't Francis Lawrence's directing of Gaga dancing and posing in different costumes for 4 minutes that made the video such a commercial and critical success but again you're probably not giving credit where it's due.

But anyway ~ loving the new throwback retro JT track. Don't even care if it overshadows Tunnel Vision anymore, i just want it to be big!

Some pretty great tracks on there and very good value (£9.99 for 63 tracks). Almost tempted to download it but I own a lot of the more recent tracks already.

(And for the record, I wasn't arguing against either 'Single Ladies' or 'Bad Romance' being "iconic", I just can't even begin to understand why they're seen that way, especially 'Single Ladies'. Personally I don't even think either of them are *good*, let alone worthy of 'iconic' status).

I don't see why you have to resort to sarcasm to try and prove your point with the "!!!!!11" etc. Yes you're a GaGa fan (so am I - casually) but you've got to accept that other people have different opinions. I personally believe it took the internet by storm because 1. it was a good video and 2. because the GaGa hype in 2009 was incredible. Award ceremonies mean nothing - and yes I know SL won loads of awards at a lot of them. But still, they (especially MTV VMAs) are ridiculous. It should be renamed the Song Awards - it's all determined by the biggest songs of the year rather than actually amazing videos. Didn't One Direction's WMYB win an award one year?

On another note, I don't understand why people keep getting "iconic" and "amazing" mixed up. Even if 'Bad Romance' is an extremely creative, imaginative and extraordinary piece of art, I'm still failing to see how it is iconic. GaGa may be a pop icon but it doesn't mean her music videos are instantly iconic too.

While I agree that you've perhaps not giving it the credit it deserves as a music video, I agree with you and don't think it is iconic. I'd describe Single Ladies as iconic because it has made its way into pop culture.

Pffft, Pink's videos are always better than Gaga's or Beyonce's IMO.

WARNING: this was an OPINION. Don't hate on it.

That's what I was getting at. This discussion is similar to the signature hit discussion a few months back in the sense that pop culture is the determining factor of what makes something a signature hit/iconic.

Re: GaGa's video, I can't knock the vision the director had for the piece but I personally don't think it translated well onto the screen. If I didn't know the concept beforehand, I wouldn't have even acknowledged it.

A video's storyline/message does not need to be shoved in people's faces for it to be iconic though.

But this opinion is fact :kink:

Pre-order Update (for songs released tonight)

9. Avicii - Wake Me Up

83. Breach - Jack

154. Selena Gomez - Come & Get It

309. Avril Lavigne - Here's To Never Growing Up

434. K Koke - My Time (feat. Bridget Kelly)

995. Lucy Spraggan - Lighthouse

Again, I never said it did. I was discussing those as two separate points.

 17. Wake Me Up (A Tribute to Avicii and Aloe Blacc) - Spark Productions

Fun fact: this will become the first fake song to get more than one week top 40. I can't believe they never got round to deleting this.

 66. I Don't Care I Love It - New Music Masters

Still going strong.

 95. Blind Faith (feat. Liam Bailey) - Chase & Status & Liam Bailey

Not sure why this is back but

I remember reading earlier that some people think Avril will struggle to go top 40, but she will easily manage this. I wouldn't be surprised to see her in the top 20 on iTunes once it has updated later tonight after the new releases. Also Selena should be at least top 15 and K Koke and Lucy at least top 40 in the initial updates tonight.
