September 11, 201311 yr As for AM, it won't be eligible next year so it was this year or never. I assume the panel had a copy several weeks ago anyway. Are they changing the rules?
September 11, 201311 yr Author Are they changing the rules? In what way? I think there was an overlap in release dates at one point but this year it covered exactly one year.
September 11, 201311 yr It does seem a very safe and dull list however I think it's generally a very good one. I have 6 of those and 5 are great albums, only Rudimental isn't, plus I've been meaning to see if Jon Hopkins album is out yet so it's good to see so much good music get recognised but yes, it does disappoint that there's nothing at all for me to investigate.
September 11, 201311 yr Pretty much echoing what everyone else has said, disappointingly safe/boring list although not a bad one. All but one of those albums went top 20 (including five #1s). I was looking forward to seeing who the annual token jazz act was. James Blake to win please although I imagine it'll be Bowie.
September 11, 201311 yr In what way? I think there was an overlap in release dates at one point but this year it covered exactly one year. Well, you said it was "this year or never" so I assumed you were saying that AM wouldn't be eligible next year for some reason and that maybe they were changing the rules.

It won't be eligible next year as it is now a strict 12 month eligibility period. However, I'm sure that there was a time when the eligibility period was 13 or 14 months to allow for slow burners.

However, I'm sure that there was a time when the eligibility period was 13 or 14 months to allow for slow burners. IMO they should move back the eligibility period to August-August (the traditional dead month) because including albums released in September (which otherwise would miss out on nomination completely) does seem far too recent.

September 12, 201311 yr Full shortlist announced. David Bowie - The Next Day Rudimental - Home Disclosure - Settle Arctic Monkeys - AM Foals - Holy Fire Jake Bugg - Jake Bugg Jon Hopkins - Immunity Laura Mvula - Sing To The Moon Savages - Silence Yourself Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle James Blake - Overgrown Villagers - Awayland That top six is shit hot.
September 12, 201311 yr Very safe list this year.... I already own 9 of them. I think it will be Disclosure or James Blakes year. Not too bothered on who wins though as most are great.
September 12, 201311 yr Massively disappointing list with several having been nominated before (probably by the same group of people with probably undeclared interests). It's time the media turned away from this prize and stopped giving it so much coverage.
September 12, 201311 yr Author In a tweet to our very own Brett-Butler, Public Service Broadcasting confirmed that they did enter their album so we now know that they were snubbed :( It would be easier to accept if there was another album to tick the general WTF box.
September 14, 201311 yr Unfortunately this is turning into more of a farce with each passing year. http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2013...campaign=130913
September 14, 201311 yr Author Unfortunately this is turning into more of a farce with each passing year. http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2013...campaign=130913 Given that the prize is supposed to reward music on its merits regardless of commercial success (or lack of it) it is disappointing that they introduce arbitrary rules on distribution.
September 15, 201311 yr James Blake to win....... I'm aghast at Bowie's nomination - if that album had been by anyone else bar him it'd be (rightly) criticised for being stodgy, safe and very middle aged 'rawk'. It's really hard compiling a list of UK best of 2013 albums really...... everyone with half an ear knows John Grant is the album of 2013.
September 16, 201311 yr I've never liked the Mercury Prize. Get 10 radically different albums and pick the best...WHAT??? P.S. Disclosure to win!
September 18, 201311 yr ...... everyone with half an ear knows John Grant is the album of 2013. He's American though...
September 23, 201311 yr He's American though... ..that's what I mean... compiling a 'Best of 2013' list minus Pale Green Ghosts..... it's never going to be easy.
