Posted July 14, 201311 yr Several hits are disqualified from the chart, but which hits only had part of its sales disqualified? The most obvious example I can think of is Ronan's #1 single in 2000 "Life Is A Rollercoaster" that actually sold 220,000 copies, but with part of its sales disqualified it ended up with 95,000. It still managed to top the chart, but it did cost him his second week at the top, which Five managed to take advantage with a terrible song. Any other examples?
July 14, 201311 yr I heard You Don't Know by Eminem/50 Cent didn't get a lot of its sales counted since the physical came with free merchandise.
July 14, 201311 yr 'Purple Pills' by D-12 had sales from one of its CD singles disqualified because it came with a free sticker. It meant Robbie Williams spent a fortnight at #1 with 'Eternity'.
July 14, 201311 yr Coldplay's "Paradise" & Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'". I think Oasis' "Some Might Say" had some of its sales disqualified from a third or fourth edition of the CD not counting for chart purposes after it was #1. Good thing though, because Livin' Joy's "Dreamer" hit #1. :D
July 14, 201311 yr Wow, I never realized Purple Pills could've got #1. :( Oh well. The sales its getting from its discount may help make up for it a bit.

July 14, 201311 yr why did ronan lose his sales?! and that many! space cowboy's "i would die 4 u" originally was due to enter at #10, but due to some rulebreaking with one of the formats, it entered at #55. i think this is right, but i'm sure if it's not one of the chart boffins will rush to correct! ^_^
July 14, 201311 yr Author also DJ Encore - I See Right Through To You (I think it was this one) was gonna be top20 in 2002, but was fully disqualified for breaking the rules. I think i'm right but correct me if i'm wrong please
July 14, 201311 yr space cowboy's "i would die 4 u" originally was due to enter at #10, but due to some rulebreaking with one of the formats, it entered at #55. WHAT?! I really love that song! :(
July 14, 201311 yr Something by The Cameleonz was top 40 in the midweeks but disqualified by Sunday because of mass multibuying (it literally had something like 15 versions all bunched together just outside the iTunes top 100). Almost all fake versions were disqualified from the chart prior to January 2011, also. JLS' 'Umbrella' should have been top 40 but ended up at something like #107 because lots of its sales weren't counted, though it wasn't completely disqualified as some other B-Sides were. The OCC was very inconsistent with allowing B-Sides to chart or not at the time, thankfully they now seem to always allow them. Edited July 14, 201311 yr by Coco Pope
July 14, 201311 yr Blur's Country House was denied a 3rd week at No1 because of a disqualified 4th version, allowing Michael Jackson to climb to No1 with You Are Not Alone.

According to Music Week Ronan's sales were 194,527 of which 100,069 (51.4%) were disqualified.
July 14, 201311 yr I seem to remember some song by Pop! being effected by these rules, was CD2 of Heaven an Earth disqualified perhaps, leading to a debut outside the top ten? Not 100% sure but it rings a bell. I loved I See Right Through To You, gutted it was disqualified! On a separate note, the early 00s were so annoying for songs that would have been top 10-40 hits due to the exposure/hype they'd built being pulled at the very last minute - Atomic Kitten's You Are and Vanessa Amorosi's Shine spring to mind. That's what I thought had happened to DJ Encore too until I saw the CD single in the shops and couldn't fathom why it hadn't charted!
July 14, 201311 yr EDIT: Sorry, misread the thread - the below is one that had all its sales disqualified, not part. Still a good opportunity to share the track though :P The brilliant 'Santa Maria' by Tatjana was destined to be a major hit in 1995, but got disqualified due to suspicions of chart-fixing (multiple copies being bought by the same person/people). A reissue a year later sneaked in at #40 at least, and a Samantha Fox cover got to #31 in 1998. 9CCvEjRctTA Still think it could be a hit one day! Edited July 14, 201311 yr by BillyH

It's quite mind boggling why they were pulled, especially "You Are". Easy top10 for them imo, it was even playlisted on Radio 1. Vanessa Amorosi and DJ Encore would've gone top20, on The Box power alone
July 14, 201311 yr Both Oasis and Blur did have their 4th formats chart separately (as did Michael & Janet Jackson - Scream). I believe Five - If Ya Gettin' Down had some sales discounted in week 1 (which may have cost it #1). Dualers - Don't Go charted at #61, but apparently had some sales discounted due to possible bulk-buying. Mark Joseph - Bringing Back Those Memories was top 10 in the midweeks, but a lot of its sales were ineligible box-sets (containing all 3 formats), so it only charted at #34. Tatjana - Santa Maria was completely DQ'd on its first release due to hyping allegations, but did chart subsequently on a re-issue (reaching #40).
It charted at #14 on both formats in week 1, then somebody pointed out that CD1 was ineligible, so it was discounted, leading the song to fall to #61 the following week. Creatures - Godzilla is another one (it was top 20 in the midweeks, but only ended up #53).
July 14, 201311 yr The chart for 10/07/1999 had Virgin and Our Price sales missing, which cost Blur’s Coffee & TV a top ten place, it was re-run in secret for 'industry purposes' only. This also explains the severity of ATB’s sharp slump in sales from 270k to 109k, when the following week its ‘held up’ at 97k.

And the situation with that Eminem single was that it was released with a free sticker in late 2006, and as the CD wasn't eligible for the chart at the time, neither were the downloads. It entered the Top 40 in January 2007 when downloads became eligible in their own right, irrespective of any physical formats - but it would surely have peaked higher on initial release. Incidentally, after 'Some Might Say' and 'Country House' made the Top 75 with their fourth formats, the rules were changed so "excess" formats wouldn't count at all. So the 7" version of 'Tender' by Blur and various 12" formats of Oasis singles went entirely unrecognised by the chart. But that's a slightly different thing because the record companies obviously knew the extra formats wouldn't count, and would often stagger release dates for that very reason. 'Michael' by Franz Ferdinand is another one where the label made a mistake, with a second CD format that wasn't counted, although they did rush out a replacement later in the week.
