The first of three songs to acquire an incredible 9+ average, 'Mowgli's Road' smashes in at #3. This is the first single release from keyboard-playing songstress Marina and the Diamonds. She explained to Digital Spy why she chose this for her buzz single: "Because it wasn't time for me to release one of my really big songs. 'Mowgli's Road' is one of my most uncompromising songs and I wanted to get the message out there that I'm not a manufactured girl popstar and I'm going to do my own thing. I knew it wasn't going to be really successful but that wasn't the point. Saying that, getting a song that starts with the word 'cuckoo' in the charts was worth a shot!" The song's title is a reference to the character in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book and the track conjures up the sense if not the sound of the English writer's story. Marina explained the song's message to Digital Spy: "It's about there being two roads in fame and the industry. When I wrote it, I didn't know whether I was meant to be some kind of weird indie artist or a big pop thing. At the end of the day, I just thought, 'You can be both if you want'. I'm a leftfield artist but I want to be really successful. You know, I think celebrity culture and sexuality in pop music is really important, but I want there to be an alternative for people." It was originally released as a double a-side with "Obsessions" on 19 November 2008 whilst Diamandis was signed to Neon Gold Records. It was re-released on its own a year later as the lead single from her debut album, The Family Jewels, on 16 November 2009. The b-side is a cover of the Late of the Pier song "Space and the Woods". The title is a reference to the character in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. The song has received generally positive reviews: "Mowgli's Road is odd. Think Gary Glitter, but if he kept pictures of The Wicker Man and some nice cutlery on his hard drive instead of that other stuff. This could easily be a hit; or, rather, the first couple of minutes could. Then it descends into a lunatic mixture of monkey wails, whistling and childlike nightmare mumbles that may well be responsible for my chronic insomnia.—Stuart Heritage, The Guardian. The music video for "Mowgli's Road" was directed by Chris Sweeney and released onto YouTube on 20 October 2009. For the song's video, Marina had two plastic puppet legs bolted to her waist for 17 hours. She described the promo to the BBC as "Jim Henson does Beyoncé's Single Ladies". The songstress added laughing: "Making these things isn't all fun and games." The music video features Diamandis and two girls with origami limbs and torso dancing in a spot light with a white screen. In the second verse, Diamandis sings into a microphone on a stand. It begins with Marina standing without lighting and stomping her origami legs to the beat of the music. When the lighting comes on, Marina begins singing and moving her origami legs; two female dancers with the same legs appear and dance with her. After the repeat of the chorus, Marina is shown with her origami torso, bouncing up and down while singing the third verse. While the music continues in the song, Marina and the dancers dance with all limbs in origami form. The video ends with the lighting of the set going out and they all stand as Marina was in the beginning. September 11, 201311 yr Author http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e7/Matdhollywood.jpg/220px-Matdhollywood.jpg #2 'Hollywood' Average: 9.145 Marina's second most successful single to-date also happens to finish in at second in this rate! It was released as The Family Jewels' second single on 1 February 2010, followed by the album's release three weeks later on 22 February 2010. When asked why "Hollywood" was chosen as a single in an interview with the BBC News website, Diamandis said: I'm saying: "This is who I was. Hollywood infected my brain and I really valued the wrong things in life, but I changed dramatically." This obsession with celebrity culture is really unhealthy. I don't want to live my life like that, and I don't want to be a typical pop star. Diamandis told The Sun: "That track is a sarcastic and cynical take on everything that's commercial about America. I love the country and people dearly and can't wait to tour there but I hate the way it brainwashes you. I am seduced by its pop culture but I don't want my brain to be infected." Fraser McAlpine of the BBC Chart Blog called the track an "properly amazing pop song" and stated that "the level of insight displayed about America, culturally and politically, is on a par with the Razorlight song about America (the name of which temporarily escapes me). Marina, for all that she's spotted that Hollywood is something of an upsettingly fake place, with scope for quite exciting things to happen, seems to get as much enjoyment out of just singing the word as she does from puncturing its ego." "Hollywood" entered the Irish Singles Chart at number 45 making it Marina and the Diamonds' first single to receive chart placement. The following week, the single reached a new peak of number 21. The single debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number 12 selling 25,746 copies. Over the course of two weeks it fell to number 22 but climbed to number 13 on its fourth week in the chart. It spent a total of six weeks in the UK top 40 chart. The music video for "Hollywood" was directed by Kinga Burza and released onto YouTube on 30 November 2009. It was filmed in "a house which is basically like a palace" in west London. The video shows an American patriotic party with multiple American flags used as decorations and clothing. There are a number of characters and objects that symbolise the stereotype of American culture featured in the music video such as cheerleaders, jocks, American football players, a pageant queen, paparazzi, a cowgirl, baseball players, look-alikes of Elvis Presley, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and President Barack Obama, hot dogs, popcorn and an Academy Award. September 11, 201311 yr Author http://saiditbest.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/marina_oh_no.jpg #1 'Oh No!' Average: 9.419 And at last we have our WINNER! :bounce: Almost scoring a perfect 10 average. "Oh No!" lead the race from start to finish. It was released as The Family Jewels's fourth single on 2 August 2010. It peaked at #39 in the UK and is Marina's 5th most successful single to-date behind 'Primadonna', 'Hollywood', 'Radioactive' and 'I Am Not a Robot'. Written on a trip to Los Angeles a week afterThe Family Jewels was mastered, "Oh No!" was the final track to complete the album. Diamandis explained: ["Oh No!"] was written in response to be terrified of not achieving what I say I want to achieve every time I open my big mouth. It's my part ii to "Mowgli's Road". I was paralysed by fear before my trip to the states and couldn't stop thinking about being a failure "etc" and was convinced that I'd become a self-fulfilling prophecy if my brain didn't shut up and stop being so negative. So I put it in a song. "Mowgli's [Road]" questioned who I want to be, "Oh No!" confirms it. It made me feel confident again after a shaky 6 months. Life is just a barrel of laughs at end of day, anyway! On Greg Kurstin, who produced the song, she said, "I had really admired his work for a long time. Seeing as I was in LA, I asked if he wanted to write together and [the song] came out really well. He's great actually, very easy to work with. I really like his production style as well." The instrumental of "Oh No!" was used to advertise the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory on E4 in the United Kingdom. She performed the track on Big Brother's Little Brother, a spin off show of reality show Big Brother UK in 2010 on E4 in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The song was used in a promo for the show Awkward on MTV in 2013. The song is on the 2012 video game Just Dance 4. The music video for "Oh No!" was directed by Kinga Burza and filmed on 10 June 2010. It was released on 28 June 2010. Diamandis said the music video was influenced by 1990s cartoons and the old "zany neon" MTV graphics. Burza said the concept of the video stems from the lyrics of "Oh No!" which reference being obsessed with consumerism, success, money and fame. The music video features a dance sequence with four dancers which was choreographed by David Leighton. He described the routine as quirky and "very bubblegum pop". The stylist for the video was Celestine Cooney who chose to feature outfits by Christopher Kane, Henry Holland and Ashish Soni. September 11, 201311 yr I've not watched the videos for those songs in so long, both works of utter genius. Two perfect pop songs too, 'Oh No!' deserved to do better and be more recognised.
November 2, 201410 yr Oh No! gets nothing lower than a 9.... Has that ever happened in a Buzzjack rate before?
