#26 'How to Be a Heartbreaker'
Average: 7.016

Next up we have Marina most recent single 'How to Be a Heartbreaker' which turns out to be Buzzjack's least favourite Marina single also! :drama: Produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut, HTBAH is one of Marina's most pop records if not the most pop Marina record which didn't please too many of her indie fans. It was added onto the US edition of 'Electra Heart' as the album's second single there. While in the UK, it was released as the third single although far too late. It did, however outperform second single 'Power & Control' commercially, peaking at #18 in Denmark where it was performed on the Danish X Factor, #23 in Finland, #21 in Ireland, #52 in Sweden and #88 in the UK. The song's music video has become a fan favourite and drew a significant amount of attention for its racy nature and the attractive half-naked male models featured in it. Marina also revealed that her label felt that she looked too ugly in the original video for it to be released so an alternate version had to be made instead. The track has also been covered by Glee on the episode 'Feud'. It's r8 average tied with 'Rootless' but the tie was broken by it receiving more '09.5's than 'Rootless'.

#25 'Lonely Hearts Club'
Average: 7.089

The upbeat 'Electra Heart' bonus track 'Lonely Hearts Club' fills up the last spot of the bottom quarter of Marina's discography. It inspired the name of Marina's largest tour as well, The Lonely Hearts Club Tour. It tells a story of how Marina sometimes detests love, with lyrics such as 'Love is not forever, feelings are just like the weather'. It's also one of Marina's more manic paced songs, so much energy and emotion squeezed into just over 3 minutes. It also marks the first time where Marina has teamed up with producers Ryan McMahon and Ryan Rabin, hence it sounding different to the rest of Marina's discography.

#24 'Seventeen'
Average: 7.1

Sneaking its way into the 3rd quarter is one of the oldest tracks in the r8 (along with 'Hermit the Frog' which is still to come), 'Seventeen'. This song is arguably what got Marina on track to become a success in the music industry. Originally included and released from Marina's debut EPs 'Mermaid vs. Sailor' and 'The Crown Jewels', 'Seventeen' garnered the attention of numerous indie blogs and critics back in 2007 and it was later included as a bonus track on 'The Family Jewels'. A short a sweet song, merely 3 minutes in length, it has an unlikely ability to be stuck in your head with Marina repeating the word 'Seventeen' constantly in the song making it instantly unforgetable, other than the 'Seeeeeveeenteennn's the song is also notable for its long verses and establishing Marina's trademark manic sound in her songs. Lyrically, it takes inspiration from a teenage heartbreak Marina experieced with an additional namecheck to Incy Wincy Spider.

#23 'Hypocrates'
Average: 7.15

Saracasm fest, 'Hypocrates' slots in at #23, of course the spelling error was on-purpose and is there to highlight the song's sarcastic troll-like nature. With negative lyrics such as 'Who are you tell me?' sung in a shockingly happy tone, it's hard to take Marina seriously on this one and even harder to understand where it fills in the 'Electra Heart' story. But the song is nonetheless quite great, its intelligent lyrics and spot-on vocals boost it but as a whole the song can come across as a tad weaker than the rest of Marina's solid discography. Looking at the rate it seems to be a favourite of pop listeners, but unfortunately not a fan favourite of Marina's fanbase as a whole. Its laid-back nature has acquired a few 'bland' labels but we will not tolerate ANY Marina hatred so let's just call this 'epic' for Marina's sake kbye.

#22 'Homewrecker'
Average: 7.483

'The Family Jewels' continues to slay 'Electra Heart' in this rate with the early appearance EH track 'Homewrecker' aka Marina's very-own $l*t anthem! No doubt we could see Marina twerking to this if it were to have a music video release now. The bitter song tells a story of Marina detesting love and wanting to get revenge as well as ruining others' chances of love at a very fast pace and uptempo. Musically it touches on the electro and Hi-NRG genres, which was yet to surface prior to 'Electra Heart'. Another highlight includes its spoken middle 8 and Marina's reaching for her super high pitch on this one. It's also been noted that this is one of Marina's favourites on EH, with it being performed on numerous occasions outside the tour and its acoustic version featuring on the 'Primadonna' EP. The song's nature additionally manifests Marina's love for Marilyn Monroe and Desperate Housewives as well as fitting right in with Marina's clever critique of men and society. It was also rumoured to be a single following its leak after the chaotic 'Radioactive'-gate.

My 2nd least favourite song of her career :'(

Hypocrates and Homewrecker!! They're two of my favourites on Electra Heart :( Both are so so epic.

How To Be A Heartbreaker has grown on me recently, I did give it a comparatively low score back when I rated and Rootless shouldn't be so low either. But it's all so good, no such thing as a bad or average Marina song but still, Hypocrates and Homewrecker should be way higher. Electra Heart does seem to be getting a bit of a raw deal, it's on the same sort of level as The Family Jewels to me (perfect).

Ha, I love that Homewrecker cover!

I'm not really surprised by any of the results so far. In Sex Yeah and Girls, the messages are greater than the songs themselves.

#21 'Guilty'
Average: 7.5

Only just missing out on a place in the top 20 is the album closer of TFJ, 'Guilty'. A manic track taking inspiration from a guilty Marina who has sinned in a romantic relationship and is now 'on the run'. Very typical Marina, but a main highlight is the songs tongue-talking tourettes like verses. Overshadowed by other TFJ tracks to begin with, 'Guilty', although an incredible track, never seems to get the credit it deserves!

'Living Dead' and 'Homewrecker' way too low. :(

I do enjoy 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' as a thoroughly good pop song but I won't argue with its positioning here.

#20 'The Outsider'
Average: 7.516

Two TFJ tracks in a row evening things out a bit, 'The Outsider' sneaks into the top 20. A catchy euphoric tracks with plenty of hooks and a nice synthy beat the track, like 'Seventeen' is one of those tracks that stick in your head whether you like it or not. Critics have deemed it as a song that could easily slot into a Lady Gaga album which I don't see the logic behind personally, as it has Marina's personal stamp on it. Lyrically, it's in the negative depressing category but we love that Marina category anyway as the rate proves that positive upbeat Marina is not what we want from her. 'The Outsider' however stands out from the rest on TFJ with its "wonky 80s shoulder-pad pop" as described by the BBC, and for that we shall commend it.

#19 'Buy the Stars'
Average: 7.535

Moving into the teens now we have the lengthy piano ballad 'Buy the Stars' which features as the final bonus track on 'Electra Heart'. Another Howe/Diamandis collab the song manifests Marina's vocal, lyrical and instrumental talent as an artist, those that say 'BLAH BLAH ADELE IS QUEEN OF PIANO BALLADS' should give this beauty a listen and recognize how Marina slays all bases *.* Lyrically, it is beautiful and deep in every way possible as well as very easy-to-relate-to with lyrics such as "All my life I've been so lonely". A funny story, I play EH regularly at work (I work in a restaurant) and clients rave about this song, from teenage girls to the old aged and I end up bluetoothing it to them. Maybe this is the niche Marina should embark on for album #3?

Still to come;

'Are You Satisfied?'

'Shampain'

'I Am Not a Robot'

'Mowgli's Road'

'Obsessions'

'Hollywood'

'Hermit the Frog'

'Oh No!'

'Numb'

'Bubblegum Bitch'

'Primadonna'

'Lies'

'Starring Role'

'The State of Dreaming'

'Power & Control'

'Teen Idle'

'Fear and Loathing'

'Radioactive'

9 vs. 9, who would you like to come up next, who will make the top 10? Who is going to win the EH vs. TFJ rivalry? :bounce:

How has Hermit the shitting Frog beaten Guilty, Rootless and The Outsider?
Buy The Stars :( One of my absolute favourites by her, shame it couldn't squeeze ahead of things like Obsessions, Starring Role and Hermit The Frog but I guess #19 is a good positioning for it overall. The Outsider is very good too but my main focus is on BTS here, if that didn't do that well I don't have that much hope for Numb making the top 10 (which I really freaking hope happens).

Guilty and Buy the Stars are out too early :(

Totally agree with the comment about Marina and her ballads. There are so many artists where I find their slower songs weak but they're a strong point for Marina as she does them so well with her lyrics and emotion.

Buy the Stars is incredible, the part where she sings "You know only how to own me" is FANTASTIC.
