Nice article in the Irish Independent today remembering Slane Castle gigs,

8 Robbie Williams at Slane, 1998

I’m not referring to his official headliner in 1999, which was broadcast live on Sky; rather, the concert he joyously hijacked from The Verve the year prior. The running order included James (always James), Finley Quaye and Manic Street Preachers, with The Verve taking to the stage at 8.30pm — but people only seem to remember Robbie bursting in, taking potshots at the VIP section, and generally captivating a crowd who had mostly intended to avoid his official set.

Slane at 40: The festival’s eight most memorable moments

Tony Clayton-Lea recalls the good, the bad and the plain awful from the event’s four-decade history – and predicts what we can expect when it returns

This weekend 40 years ago, August 16, witnessed the first of what has become Ireland’s longest-lasting one-day open-air music event — the Slane Castle concert. Across generations, it has become a rite of passage for gig-goers and a bucket-list item for musicians and bands. While the pandemic may have put a halt to its growth as a music venue, plans for two concerts in 2022 are under way. The headline acts for these proposed concerts will be announced in due course, but in the meantime, here is a reminder of some of the more memorable concerts, if not always for the right reasons.

Robbie Williams

Several support acts at Slane through the years have graduated to headline ( notable U2, Oasis, & Foo Fighters ) but apart from Robbie Williams no act has managed to make that jump within the space of a year. You could say it was written in the stars - Williams support slot in 1998 was a masterclass in barefaced cheek, flagrant entertainment value & natural usurpation. He gazumped the drab headliners The Verve ( who would split up within a year ) , trounced Manic Street Preachers ( a band renowned for their frolic-free fare & made the decision for the following years headlining act as a no-brainer

Oh my, pure love from me for this Robbie. When I saw Slane on tape first 20 years after it happened I was speechless

They are trying to get Slane going again, they were brilliant weekends :)

Not about Rob but Robert Smith :) and these lyrics

This is the first time I know I don't want the crown

You can take it now

I think it's one of the best singles of 2021!

And one more example how to be relevant now.

Amazing collaboration!

Gotta admire Elton John, do you know he has written the music for the musical adaptation of the film 'The Devil Wears Prada' , it's due out next year ( postponed due to the pandemic ) , he is always doing something that makes him current. Robbie & his team are not good at keeping fans updated on what he is doing music wise which is a shame . Even Westlife have started recording a new album to be launched next year -_-

this is what I do not understand either. Robbie is speaking about so many things so many years and nothing ever comes true. Not the TV shows, not the rave album and so on. This is a pattern Covid independent. I sometimes think that if you consider how massive he was in the nineties and until the mid '00 years even when he came back in 2010, he is the most forgotten superstar.

When he at last starts to do what he planned the hype in pubic for the sujet (disco for example) is over again. And even his promotion is not the best when he is doing it. Fans can be happy to appreciate good or very bad Ayda postings. who is not interested in Ayda though has no idea that Rob still makes music. Oh yes, we get sometime some better or very odd podcasts
