100 The Drums "Let's Go Surfing" (2010) [917]

UK chart peak: #63

45-29-17-10-06-02-02-04-07-10-14-24-32-36-45-49-49 (17 weeks)

Kicking off the Top 100 is a band who started the 2010s at #1 on my chart with "I Felt Stupid" spending 4 weeks atop the chart - that song does not appear here sadly - (as most of its chart run was in 2009), however their very first single (also released in 2009) does appear thanks to a re-release in the summer of '10. The song was written in 2008, inspired by Barack Obama's victory in the 2008 presidential election and picks up on the optimism of the time. Jonathan Pierce said at the time "If you listen to the second verse it's very clearly about Obama being brought into the White House and (how) things might change. Nothing really changed - well, a few things changed. Everything was so sensationalised and romanticised, so 'Let's Go Surfing' is about unbridled freedom."

Not about what Harve thought it was about. Naughty Harve. :(

099 Zola Jesus "Night" (2010) [920]

28-16-11-02-01-02-05-07-12-17-21-24-33-39-48-50 (16 weeks)

Nika Roza Danilova, otherwise known as Zola Jesus - released this ethereal power ballad in the summer of 2010 and it had a massive impact on me at first (rising very quickly to #1). Nika recently released a versions album featuring reworkings of previous releases with a string quartet led by J.G. Thirlwell. She has also provided her wonderful vocals for both Orbital (on "New France") and M83 (on "Intro"). Describing her music, Nika said in an interview "Musically, I really love things that are very synthetic and unnatural. And I also like the organic and human... the intrinsic, I guess. I always try to reconcile the dichotomy between the two and make it into something that is unique."

098 AlunaGeorge "Attracting Flies" (2013) [920]

UK chart peak: #17

And now for something very much more recent. British duo, Aluna Francis and George Reid burst onto the pop scene with their future-pop in 2012 with the wonderful "You Know You Like It" and "Your Drums, Your Love" (a minor Top 75 hit; and still to come in this countdown), and after finishing second in the BBC's Sound of 2013 were expected to break through in a big way. Sadly their debut Body Music slumped in at #11 and so far they have yet to score a Top 10 single; however "Attracting Flies" - Aluna's ode to an ex for telling untrue tales about her - managed to give the band their biggest hit to date peaking at #17 in the UK.

097 HAERTS "Wings" (2012) [923]

32-22-13-10-05-02-03-04-06-09-12-17-24-31-37-46 (16 weeks)

An absolutely beautiful song that came out of nowhere right at the end of last year - "Wings" was unfortunately blocked out of #1 by some strong competition over Christmas '12 but they eventually made #1 with their second single, the wonderful "All The Days" back in June of this year. Of the song the band said "We wrote Wings three years ago and it’s hard to say what exactly went through our minds at that point. It was just the outcome of things that moved us at the time and we wrote it as a slow ballad at home in Brooklyn. Listening to it now, Wings definitely speaks about the melancholic sentiment of growing up and having to loose certain conceptions and memories for new uncertain realities and finding beauty in that. There is heartbreak of leaving things behind in order to move on, and it’s a bit tragic but at the same time hopeful in that way."

Inspired by Gooddelta's post, with 3 and a half years of this decade already gone (yes I know the decade started on 1st January 2011, but stop being PEDANTIC) here is a rundown of the 100 songs that have performed best on my personal chart in that time.

First up, at #100 it is the Drums.

HA! I don't know when I voiced my cottaging interpretation or where I found that interpretation, but it fits and I still stand by it today.

I've heard and like every song so far, so a good start. Have you heard the Raveonettes' remix of Let's Go Surfing? It's tremendous!

Oh and it got to #63 in the UK chart? <3

096 Django Django "Default" (2012) [923]

40-32-23-14-09-07-05-03-04-07-09-15-19-28-35-44-50 (17 weeks)

"Take one for the team/ You're a cog in the machine/ It's like a default." There's just something ever-so effortless and addictive about this track that allows it to worm it's way into your head very quickly. Django Django first met as art students in Edinburgh, then reconnected in London when Maclean was at art school and the others had regular jobs. The band consists of David Maclean (drummer and producer), Vincent Neff (singer and guitarist), Jimmy Dixon (bassist) and Tommy Grace (synth operator). "Default" was their breakthrough single, and led on to the band's self-titled debut which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2012!

095 Friends "I'm His Girl" (2011) [933]

37-22-12-06-05-03-02-05-07-13-19-23-28-34-40-44-50 (17 weeks)

This band have evolved quite dramatically from their formation just over 3 years ago in 2010, with two of the original line-up leaving last year. They've never quite matched this, the debut single - a catchy and upbeat pop track that features a cyclical lyric offering a defiantly female take on open relationships. They played a really good set at Latitude over the summer and attracted a rather large crowd, but sadly to-date they've not quite hit the big time with their debut album Manifest! failing to set the charts alight and peaking at the bottom rung (#100) on the UK album chart last summer. :(

094 Autre Ne Veut "Play By Play" (2013) [936]

37-23-14-09-03-02-03-03-05-08-12-16-22-30-39-48 (16 weeks)

Arthur Ashin released probably my favourite record of the year to date back in February, a sort of autobiographical album filled with his anxieties, co-incidentally titled Anxiety - "Play By Play" was the second single taken from it and jumped straight to #2 on my chart in March. Of the song Arthur said ". That song definitely has a number of different parts that reference what would qualify for many people as guilty pleasures—or not really pleasures at all. So yeah, there are times where I have to tell myself, “This is one too many ideas,” but for me on “Play By Play” it really works to go through that process, to take you on a weird journey through contemporary pop music."

093 Frank Ocean "Pyramids" (2012) [936]

45-29-19-10-06-06-04-02-02-03-06-13-21-30-40-49 (16 weeks)

One time member of OFWGKTA (the hip hop collective), Frank Ocean started to embark on his own solo career in 2011 with the release of critically acclaimed mix-tape Nostalgia, Ultra. Skip forward to 2012 and then came huge and well-deserved success of his debut LP Channel Orange which earned him 6 Grammy nominations - it was a commercial success too hitting #2 in both the US and the UK. The standout single from his debut was the almost 10 minute epic "Pyramids" which reached #2 in September 2012, the song is a clever 2-part opus first beginning with a dream of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra and her ultimate betrayal, and then switching to another doomed romance between the unemployed protagonist and his lonely strip club worker girlfriend, called Cleopatra.

092 Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs "Garden" (2011)

UK chart peak: #135

42-20-14-10-06-02-05-07-07-09-13-16-20-25-32-45-50 (17 weeks)

Orlando Higginbottom is the Oxford born music producer behind the dance outfit TEED (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs). His debut single "Garden", featuring the wonderful vocals of Luisa Gerstein, had actually been around in one format or another for a few years, but eventually was properly released in the Autumn of '11. Despite Nokia using the catchy hook for advertising their first-generation Lumia line of smartphones this track has failed to chart higher than #135 in the UK. Orlando said of his love of dance music "For me, dance music is full of nostalgia, which is a really powerful emotion, and I hope, that’s what my music feels like. You best listen to it on a Wednesday, so after the weekend. Clubbing goes by like that and I’m back in my studio writing music about experiences I can’t really remember."

091 Kanye West "All Of The Lights" (2011) [941]

UK chart peak: #15

39-25-18-12-05-04-04-06-06-05-08-15-24-29-35-39-50 (17 weeks)

Kanye West doesn't help himself does he? I mean anyone who takes themselves that seriously is always setting themselves up for a massive fall when they put out some garbage and call it a record, but what you can't take away from him is his actual musical ability - he has created some stunning albums over the past decade, and both Late Registration and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy show that quite dramatically. "All Of The Lights" is taken from the latter and features the vocals of well Rihanna amongst others and has just got better with time. I really do regret not charting this higher now retrospectively. Anyway despite the fact that he has been a bit hit-and-miss lately ("H•A•M" was pretty dire) he does have another track to come VERY much higher! (no it's not "Black Skinhead" - but that will no doubt be here by the end of the year).

090 Magnetic Man ft. Katy B "Perfect Stranger" (2010) [948]

UK chart peak: #16

39-18-10-05-05-05-04-04-07-10-14-15-15-16-26-38-48 (17 weeks)

DJs Skream, Benga and Artwork teamed-up in 2010 as Magnetic Man, producing a mostly forgettable self-titled debut; however the 2nd single taken from, "Perfect Stranger", took a fantastic hook and the wonderful vocals of 21 year-old London singer/songwriter Kathleen Anne Brien, aka Katy B to produce one of the years greatest dance tracks. Katy B became involved with the project after Benga produced her breakthrough hit single, "Katy On A Mission" and used this single on her outstanding debut of the same name. I fell in love with this instantly, it sounded quite different at the time with it's Jungle-esque beats, and it went on to spend 2 months inside my Top 10.

089 iamamiwhoami "Play" (2012) [948]

30-18-09-04-02-02-03-04-06-11-14-20-27-33-39-45 (16 weeks)

So it took me a while to 'get' Jonna Lee, lead singer of the multimedia project iamamiwhoami - who first appeared in 2009 as a series of cryptic videos and then eventually proper songs as part of the 'bounty' project. "Play" was the first single to be released from the debut LP Kin and the first time I heard it I loved it - it sounds like nothing else at first listen, so strange and yet so beautiful. There are some dramatic synths and a insanely catchy vocal hook, complete with a few “la la la’s” thrown in for good measure. Jonna has another song still to come much higher up this list!

088 Sigur Rós "Brennisteinn" (2013) [951]

50-34-19-11-08-06-04-04-06-10-16-22-28-32-30-26-36-42 (18 weeks)

After a little slump in recent offerings, 2012s Valtari notably disappointing many fans - it was with huge joy when I first heard the thundering industrial thud of 2013s Kveikur - this was the stunning lead single "Brennisteinn" which gave the Icelandic band their first return to the Top 5 since 2008s "Inní mér syngur vitleysingur" and biggest overall hit single since the iconic "Hoppípolla". Kjartan Sveinsson's notable departure at the beginning of 2013 seems to have changed the band, and we have seen them released from their shackles as the heavy and quite angry sounding "Brennisteinn" (Icelandic for Brimstone) quite clearly demonstrates. The song still contains the unmistakable and angelic vocals of Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson, but this time surrounds them by brutal and distorted beats.

Surely a decade is whenever you want it to be? It's just a period of 10 years. The 1990s started in 1990, not 1991. Just because it wasn't the start of the 199th decade doesn't make it part of the 1980s!
