Midweek Charts update: Robbie Swings ahead of One Direction

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Robbie Williams has moved narrowly ahead of One Direction in a close battle to top this weekend's UK artist albums chart.

His Island album Swings Both Ways was by the end of Thursday around 1,200 sales ahead of the Syco boy band's Midnight Memories, which secured a second week at No 1 last Sunday and was leading during the early part of this week.

According to Official Charts Company data, sales of Swing Both Ways are up 44% on the week with the album clearly benefitting from BBC One last Friday evening broadasting One Night At The Palladium, featuring Williams and a cast of guests performing at the historic London venue. The album debuted at No 1 last month before being replaced by Midnight Memories the following week.

One Direction have now dropped to 2 in the latest Sales Flashes with Gary Barlow's Polydor set Since I Saw You Last holding at 3 but with sales up 31% on the week. Epic act Olly Murs' Right Place Right Time, which was re-issued a week ago in an extended version, holds at 4 as sales rise 83%, while two Michael Buble albums are now in the Top 10 following his performance on ITV's The X Factor last weekend. To Be Loved moves 19-5 with sales up 147% and fellow Reprise/Warner Bros release Christmas improves 10-6 with sales rising 45%.

Parlophone's Lily Allen continues to lead midweek singles with Somewhere Only We Know with Positiva/PRMD's Avicii up 8-2 with Hey Brother on the back of a 41% sales rise. Meanwhile, Syco's Leona Lewis could be heading for her highest charting single since Happy reached No 2 in 2009 with One More Sleep rising 34-3. Sales of the single, which she performed on The X Factor last week, are up 286%.

There are also big sales increases for Pharrell Williams' Happy on the Back Lot label (up 277%) and Warner Bros act Jason Derulo's Trumpets (up 65%) to move 30-6 and 12-7 respectively in the week to date.

Hope he makes No.1 tomorrow and holds the top spot next week, although 1D are on the X Factor final this weekend so their sales should rise. I love Swings Both Ways!

the canadian total reads like this, in its first week the album sold 643 copies at #87, total sales after week 1 were 723 copies sold. Should be at 1,000 copies now.

BTW the German domination is real. GER, AUT and SWI are stanning hard for the album. 3x Gold in Germany is impressive. Both swing albums combined sold around 1,800,000 in Germany so far. I bet Swing II can hit 500k here.

Robbie Williams knocks One Direction off top of Official Albums Chart

Robbie Williams reclaims his Official Albums Chart crown, knocking One Direction into second place.

Robbie Williams’ latest album, Swings Both Ways, looks set to be one of 2013’s top Christmas gifts, according to the Official Charts Company’s latest sales data.

As the British public put the finishing touches to their Christmas shopping in earnest, Robbie returns to the top of the Official Albums Chart today. Swings Both Ways became the UK’s 1000th Official Number 1 Album upon its release four weeks ago and has since sold over 400,000 copies putting it on track to be one of the UK’s biggest sellers of the year.

However, after one week at the Official Albums Chart summit, Robbie was knocked off Number 1 by One Direction’s Midnight Memories. Robbie reclaims his throne from the young pretenders (who slide one place to Number 2 today), with a winning margin of over 5,000 copies.

Meanwhile, Gary Barlow holds firm at Number 3 with his latest album, Since I Saw You Last and Olly Murs also remains static at Number 4 with Right Place, Right Time. This week’s Top 5 is completed by a surprise new entry from Beyoncé, which debuts at Number 5 today after just 48 hours on sale.

The Official Albums Chart Top 10 is as follows. Click here to see the Official Albums Chart Top 100 in full after 7pm.

1 SWINGS BOTH WAYS ROBBIE WILLIAMS

2 MIDNIGHT MEMORIES ONE DIRECTION

3 SINCE I SAW YOU LAST GARY BARLOW

8 LOVED ME BACK TO LIFE CELINE DION

9 THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP 2 EMINEM

10 THE NATION'S FAVOURITE ELVIS SONGS ELVIS PRESLEY

so proud of him. he remains a force tp be reckoned with. He is still massive - in his 2 core markets across the canal, UK & Germany.. and would anyone have predicted that he dominates little Germany: Austria as well?

IFPI platinum award is in the bag now.

And guess what, the album deserves every bit the success it received so far because the music is astoundingly amazing. Swing II is a great sequel - musically and now commercially too.
