Get well, soon, miss...

As much as I'd love to go over to visit, I just don't have enough vacation time where I work, and I just don't have the funds for the trip right now, especially as I wound up taking on a car payment a couple of weeks back to replace my car that was totaled 3 weeks back, along with student loans and 2 credit card payments....

Even looking for a deal on a trip to France, I can't afford it just yet...

Life is all about bills, bills, bills :( , you just pay one & another on arrives :o

Any of you folks live near Kew Gardens, Dale Chihuly the glass artist has an exhibition on there until the end of October. I went to see it in Seattle , his work is fabulous

Chihuly: Reflections on nature

Ooh - the night time experience sounds good. August to October.

Kew and art installations lit up. I'm going to see if hubby fancies that. Thanks for the heads up Tess ^_^

Edit: I've just booked night tickets Tess for 17th August

Looking at the photos - I wonder if it's one of the artist's works in the ceiling of the V&A? There's a very similar glass exhibit in green//blue up on the ceiling as you walk into the main part of the museum. I've always admired its' quirkiness.

Don't remember if I mentioned it before, Dale Chihuly has a place here in my corner of Florida with a bunch of his works on display....think he's rotated some of his work between here in Florida and Seattle....

He tours his work quite a lot , have you been to see it Mr B , I found both his indoor & outdoor exhibition in Seattle just amazing , these days I believe he relies on his team to do a lot of the work , I don't think healthwise that he is in great shape '''

That will be interesting Laura, when I went to see it in Seattle it was in the daytime, however that exhibition was both indoor & outdoor, the indoor one had the lights down so gave a spectacular effect & the outdoor was was in a garden setting , I loved the whole thing, really spectacular . I am absolutely sure you & Mr Stanley will love it Laura, great you booked it ..

I do not remember the glass exhibition in the V & A , it cold be Chihuly as he does those kind of spectacular pieces

Is is difficult to get to Kew Gardens from central London , I might try & get over there before the expo ends ..

Gosh !! what a ding dong between Mo Farah & Haile Gebrselassie , two of my favourite athletes . I got to see Haile at the Sydney Olympics games back in 2000 ..

I know many years ago he lost an eye while working on a piece, so, as you rightly stated, he does have a team doing most of the physical work for his pieces...I've not been to his exhibit hall here in Florida, yet....

It says rotunda chandelier in the V & A according to Wikipedia..

I've never heard of him apart from on here - I feel a bit ignorant :(

Amazing what you learn on here. Robbie who?

Yep !! , It's a Chihuly :)

Behind the Scenes: Cleaning Dale Chihuly's V&A Rotunda Chandelier

Chihuly's enormous glass Chandelier under the dome of the main entrance presents an interesting cleaning problem. The Chandelier is fixed in position so it is necessary for a heroic member of the Museum's technical staff to brave the heights on a 'Powerscope' - a type of raising platform.

The job requires time, skill and nerve. The cleaner must move the raising platform around the Chandelier and do one section at a time, starting at the top and lowering the platform gradually.

An essential piece of equipment is an anti-static wand with plastic filaments which is sprayed with cleaner and literally poked in and around the glass. The technician works from top to bottom and side to side. Cleaning may shuffle the glass but these components do settle back into place.

Cleaning is done before opening hours and now that the new (2001) Chandelier is twice the size of the original (1999) Chandelier the job is now done over several mornings.

The V&A Rotunda Chandelier, created in 2001, is one of a number of works from Chihuly's 'Chandelier' series begun in 1992. Chihuly works extravagantly in richly-coloured blown glass, drawing on the historic techniques of the Murano glassworks in Venice. He was initially intrigued by the space-changing potential of the chandelier form, and has succeeded in massing colour, shade and light alongside a driving sense of movement.

Made by Chihuly and his studio team in Seattle, Washington State, USA, each separate glass element of the V&A Rotunda Chandelier was either free-blown, or was mould-blown into ribbed moulds. Each element is coated inside with polyurethane adhesive and was tied on individually with stainless steel wire to an armature welded from steel rod. A team of six started wiring on from bottom to top and took over five days to complete the work.
