September 24, 201311 yr Author MecSlkWMHPY 01. Suspiria · Dario Argento (1977) 02. Repulsion · Roman Polanski (1965) 03. The Exorcist · William Friedkin (1973) 04. Don't Look Now · Nicolas Roeg (1973) 05. The Shining · Stanley Kubrick (1980) 06. Peeping Tom · Michael Powell (1980) 07. Halloween · John Carpenter (1978) 08. REC · Jaume Balagueró (2007) 09. Kill List · Ben Wheatley (2001) 10. Nightmare on Elm Street · Wes Craven (1984) FOR ME. Just missing out are Carrie and Rosemary's Baby but far too many to apologise for snubbing. A Clockwork Orange would top any list i ever do so i decided to ignore it because it's not really genre specific. Suspiria just pips it through being a combination of being insanely over-the-top, having the best death scenes of any film ever, the right amount of scares, an INCREDIBLE soundtrack/visuals but mainly because it's downright fun throughout. Repulsion is a subtle masterpiece + probably the film i've seen more than any other and it still manages to scare me. A lot speak for themselves but Peeping Tom and Kill List deserve mentions for not being conventional horror films but managing to be just as scary as those around them.
September 24, 201311 yr omg it's probably my least favourite genre (Westerns tho VOM VOM). Most likely because I get scared too easily. :( Won't watch a horror movie unless I REALLY want to for some reason, it's not scary (Resident Evil / Silent Hill these aside - so f***ing creepy] / Final Destination) or someone convinces me to watch it (Saw (which is now in category #2)).
September 24, 201311 yr I always find it so hard to compile my top 10 favourite horror films when there is just SO MUCH AMAZINGNESS but this would be it (roughly): 01. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 02. Halloween (1978) 03. Shaun of the Dead (2004) (not completely 'horror' I'm aware, but even as a hybrid film, it's a shining example of all the genres it takes on) 03. Scream (1994) 04. Psycho (1960) 05. Jaws (1975) 06. Rosemary's Baby (1958) 07. The Exorcist (1973) 08. Drag Me To Hell (2009) 09. Alien (1979) 10. The Shining (1981) Painfully obvious, but I'm rather painfully recent to coming round to this as well (hence the two rather recent inclusions), I used to be much like Pavel (^). I still haven't seen Silence of the Lambs! Nightmare on Elm Street genuinely terrified me, if just because it made the concept of wandering around the house at night when everyone's asleep terrifying! I did an assignment on satanic cinema last year and I guess through that I grew to really appreciate Rosemary's Baby/The Exorcist again. I went a long time being quite disappointed with the latter due to how scary everyone was calling it, when I was...underwhelmed. I've grown to appreciate it though. The most recent horror film I've watched is The Blair Witch Project, continuing in my catch up of the classics. Certainly impressive in a lot of ways, it wasn't AMAZING, but I totally see what it was trying to do and calling it 'slow' or 'not scary' would be missing the point slightly. The end scene was chilling. (I would be completely up for a Buzzjack horror film rate btw, dunno if I'd be able to run it but still) Edited September 24, 201311 yr by Chez Wombat
September 24, 201311 yr Author Liking that list Tom! I grew up watching A Nightmare on Elm Street (literally every day after school i'd put it on and then not be able to go upstairs or into the loo on my own :drama:) and i think it's what spurred on my love for the genre. Simply refuse to watch any of the sequels though because i don't want anything to take away from the horror of the original. The Exorcist gets a lot of stick but that's to be expected seeing as it's so often hailed as the definitive/most scary film which will attract doubters. I don't actually think it's the scariest, but it's definitely one of the best horror films purely for the iconic moments it's created and the soundtrack is pretty universal now too. And Rosemary's Baby LOVE. Definitely check out the other two in the unofficial trilogy if you haven't already (Repulsion & The Tenant; the latter isn't really a horror but it's downright ODD which is always a good thing). And Pav there's so much to discover GET ON IT!
September 24, 201311 yr In alphabetical order, I genuinely couldn't order anything from the horror genre! 01. 'Birds' 02. 'Blair Witch Project' (The last 15 minutes or so are literally the scariest 15 minutes I think I've witnessed, that I can handle) 03. 'Carrie' 04. 'Paranormal Activity' 05. 'Psycho' 06. 'Scream' (I like all of them equally - yes including the 4th <3) 07. 'Sinister' (too soon? Maybe. But it genuinely terrified me!) 08. 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (the 2003 (?) version. The original was awful. SO BORING, but that remake got it right, imo.) 09. 'The Conjuring' (see 'Sinister') 10. '[Rec]' (1 & 2) [i'm cheating] 'The Exorcist' doesn't even register with me as I find that the scariest movie of all time, to the point where I really can't enjoy it! Honestly the only film to have that impact on me. I always say to my friends who don't like the horror genre and say "it's too scary" and they don't give it a chance (it annoys me when they don't give it a chance ). I'm like that's the point, if it's not scary then it's not really done it's job (depending on the type of horror film you watch), but 'The Exorcist' just takes it too far for me to handle. Possession genuinely terrifies me. I'm sure I've missed some truly obvious ones! I'm looking for recommendations all the time so I'm going to find this thread very handy! I'm going to give that 'Suspiria' a go next I think! Ooh! I forgot to include 'The Evil Dead' (both the original and remake. Enjoyed them both so much!)
September 24, 201311 yr I'll have a think about my favourites and I'll make a list in a few days. Texas Chainsaw (1974) is definitely one of them. Scream I was great, II was fine, III was shocking, and I refused to see IV. Halloween (1978) is superb. H20 was fun and I still really like it but it's more of a guilty pleasure than anything else. There are some silent horror films that are divine, so they'll probably make an appearance on my list. 08. 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (the 2003 (?) version. The original was awful. SO BORING, but that remake got it right, imo.) No. We've had this conversation before. Stahp. :(
September 25, 201311 yr Sorry! :( I can't say that it was because I watched the remake first, because I actually didn't :o I was hesitant to watch the remake due to how much I disliked the original. 'Thirteen Ghosts' is also scary, good fun. The Jackal is one of the scariest "ghosts" I've ever seen. Probably because it's just like the exorcist face, stuck in a cage! *shivers* One horror film that I want to see again because I also found it crap (probably due to the copy I watched though!) is 'The Descent'. People keep raving about this, but from what I can remember I found it crap, annoying and dull (but like I said I watched a copy... so that probably played a factor).
September 25, 201311 yr Author Of all the slasher remakes Texas Chainsaw does it the best but i still much prefer the original. I mean the dinnertable scene in that, ARGH. Martyrs Calvaire Saw [REC] [REC] 2 28 Days Later Love the noughties. Not seen the first two (heard good things about Martyrs) but the ones that follow  For the noughties it's ALL about [REC]. And spanish/2007 horror also = The Orphanage *.*
September 25, 201311 yr Hmm, only ten? In no particular order 1 - Alien 2 - The Shining 3 - The Thing 4 - Ringu 5 - Ju On 6 - Cannibal Holocaust 7 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre 8 - The Exorcist 9 - Freaks 10 - The Omen Honorable mentions also to Psycho, Frankenstein, Halloween, Nosferatu, Evil Dead, Near Dark, Dark Water (the Japanese original), The Wicker Man, House Of The Devil, Hellraiser, The Howling, An American Werewolf In London, Poltergeist, Trick Or Treat, Dead Of Night, Night Of The Demon
September 25, 201311 yr Author Ju-On!! Need more Japanese/Asian stuff if anyone can recommend (will check out Dark Water), they really don't hold back. Definitely an area i want to get into more. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) is the first that comes to mind for good stuff. The cover is enough: http://www.weirdwildrealm.com/filmimages/taletwosisters-poster.jpg
September 25, 201311 yr 'Martyrs' i'd have put that, but I wasn't sure if it classed as a horror or not. Such an amazing film!
September 25, 201311 yr Ju-On!! Need more Japanese/Asian stuff if anyone can recommend (will check out Dark Water), they really don't hold back. Definitely an area i want to get into more. I seem to recall a few others that might be interesting to you Audition House The Eye The Host R-point Tetsuo (I + II) Death Note
September 26, 201311 yr 'The Host' is excellent. The scene where the monster runs riot at the park place, is very well done!
September 27, 201311 yr There are some films that I'd like to include on my list but these are the ten I enjoy the most. I've included links to my favourite scenes/bits/music from some of them. It wasn't particularly scary but even the CONCEPT just freaked me out. I've hated chainsaws ever since I watched this as a kid. 03 Scream (1996) 04 Häxan (1922) I love this more for the cinematography than the story tbh. I usually find silent films an absolute chore to sit through (o hai Metropolis) but I really enjoyed this. 05 Begotten (1990) This is FILTHY but it always sticks in my mind. Truly bizarre. 06 Les yeux sans visage (1960) 07 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) See Häxan. 08 Carrie (1976) 09 The Craft (1996) Not entirely horror, I know. And don't judge me! 10 The Blair Witch Project (1999)
September 28, 201311 yr Must say I thought "Blair Witch" was a big DISAPPOINTMENT although that could be more to do with the hype pre release- anywhoo here's ten films which genuinely did scare me when I saw them PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2007)- Only saw this very recently- just after I moved into my first house and lived alone for the first time too- NICE THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979)- Think I saw this for the first time in the early 90s! THE CONJURING (2013)- Probably the best horror flick I've seen in a while - some genuinely scary moments, in places too formulaic SAW (2004)- The original and the best- a horror film which is clever and with a twist POLTERGIST (1982)- Another one from my childhood, a classic surely A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984)- I probably saw this when I was about 10 (BAD parents :D ) a superior film in the "slasher" genre HOSTEL (2005)- One of my friends won't visit Eastern Europe due to this film- odd fact. DRACULA (1958) Way back in the 80s they used to show Hammer horror pics on a Friday night and I was occasionally allowed to stay up until BBC 1 closed (about Midnight back then)- I think that's where my love of Horror films comes from, this is one of the best they made- Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee remain the definitive Dracula & Van Helsing for me THE OMEN (1976) Clearly a classic- late 70s was a golden time for the genre AMERICAN WAREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)- Dear god the scenes on the moors and in the London Underground scared the crap out of me many years ago
September 28, 201311 yr I first saw "A Nightmare on Elm Street" when I was 4 years old. Messed with my brain so much I had to wedge my wardrobe door closed with my bedroom door so 'Freddie' couldn't get out for the best part of 6 years afterwards. "A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is hilariously funny though and helped me get over my fear of Mr. Krueger.
