Persephonia turning Japanese for LXXVII

As in many cultures, 7 is a lucky number for the Japanese, so what better contest than number 77 for Persephonia to send their first ever Japanese entry? :magic: (This is in fact entirely coincidental).

For BJSC LXXVII in Aquafina, we will be represented by the Japanese alternative rap group Suiyôbi No Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ), whose name translates from Japanese/Italian to 'Wednesday's Little Bell', with their latest release 'Shakushain' (シャクシャイン). This marks our third foreign language entry of the year and fourth overall in our history following previous entries in French, Persian and Arabic. Yay diversity.

The lyrics will obviously not mean much to many people in the contest - in fact as far as I can tell even in Japanese it's just a string of nonsense lyrics and references to places in Hokkaido - but we are hoping the infectious rhythm of singer/rapper KOM_I's lyrics and the production (somewhat reminiscent of Major Lazer in parts) will appeal to at least a few. With 15 songs DNQing again we don't hold much hope of making it to a 4th final in a row.

Have a listen to the song and a look at the video below if you so wish ~

(EDIT: this group seem to have now changed their English name to 'WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA' :magic: have changed the name in most of my other posts but leaving these few from the original contest intact ~)

Wonder Villains 12th in YBO Rejects

Persephonia achieved their best position to date in the themed BJSC spinoffs (i.e. excluding year end contests and BJFestivalen) coming 12th out of 41 in Your Best of BJSC - The Rejects with Wonder Villains' 'Zola', scoring 115 points. The Persephonian BJSC Committee is satisfied that justice was achieved for the track which originally came third last in its semi (following a deduction).

Aquafina repeated their win of the predecessor spinoff 'Your Best of BJSC', becoming the first country to win two spinoffs thanks to Adelén's 'Baila Conmigo' which received 198 points. BJSC Re:LOADED IV hosted in Persephonia

al-Robāt in the west of Carellisia State has become the third Persephonian city to host a BJSC event as they currently hold the fourth edition of sporadic and niche spinoff Re:LOADED, slowly sweeping through the early days of the contest and now reliving the smallest ever contest, orignally held in Bhangra. Sara Bareilles' 'Love Song' won first time around but will she retain her title? You can help decide by submitting your votes if you haven't already, just click the banner below to go to the voting thread!

Qualification again somehow!

Against our own expectations Persephonia have made it to the final again, extending our current qualification streak to 4, with Suiyôbi No Campanella's 'Shakushain'. This means BJSC LXXVII will officially mark our 40th appearance in a final (out of 56 entries).

If only Sogand had qualified four contests ago we'd now have the longest active qualification streak as Daehun's streak has finally ended, with their entry 'Love Doesn't Need To Pretend' by R-chord feat. Diana Wang failing to secure an 18th consecutive final qualifier for them. The record has instead gone jointly to Danaelanda and the current host nation Aquafina who have both hit 10 consecutive finals, the latter of course autoqualifying for this contest.

Somewhat of a shame for Daehun's streak to end now as it would have been nice for the southeast Twikandean nations representing the Asian trifecta (Daehun sending a Chinese language song, Séyetana a Korean language song and us a Japanese language song) to all make the final. But two out of three isn't bad. And lol Daehun flop.

Nice one! Quite a few defying the odds this month by the looks of things.

Bringing the swag rhythmic Japanese vibes to the final! *.*

To be fair everyone else predicted me through lol. Trifoski were the only ones TRULY defying the odds (as they often do) ~

Utopia win BJSC Re:LOADED IV in Persephonia

After a slight delay the results of BJSC Re:LOADED IV in al-Robāt, Persephonia concluded last night. Utopia's entry 'Pull Shapes' by The Pipettes, which came 2nd in the original BJSC IV, won the spinoff with 89 points, 7 ahead of the original winner 'Love Song' by Sara Bareiles representing FSR Rontvia. The Persephonian BJSC Committee are proud to have been given the opportunity to host one of these rerun spinoffs despite the slightly disappointing voter turnout.

Persephonia's full televote results for the contest are as follows:

12 Bhangra // Mike Oldfield feat. Cara Dillon - Man In The Rain 10/10

10 Kylienips // New Order - Blue Monday 10/10

8 New Alba // Scarlet - Independent Love Song 9/10

7 Utopia // The Pipettes - Pull Shapes 9/10

6 Simondly // The Modern - Industry 8.5/10

5 Rivandia // Basia Bulat - In The Night 8/10

4 Land of Jack // Hoobastank - The Reason 8/10

3 π // Polina Gagarina - Kolibelnaya 7.5/10

2 Frahliso // SEREBRO - Whats Your Problem 7.5/10

1 Cascadia // Moby feat. Gwen Stefani - South Side 7/10

FSR Rontvia // Sara Bareilles - Love Song 7/10

Persephonia draw Thailand for Worldvision

Meanwhile another spinoff is kicking off, with Sandebörg acting as first-time hosts of a BJSC event for Worldvision, in which participant countries are randomly assigned a (real) country and must send an artist from that country. Persephonia have been assigned the slightly tricky Thailand. The Persephonian BJSC Committee quickly found 2 potential entries which are massively different from each other, one being an Aphex Twin-esque 'intelligent dance music' instrumental and the other being a K-Pop-esque trashy pop song by a girlgroup. Currently the latter has been selected due to the PBJSCC's desire to not finish last in the spinoff despite the former being slightly more in keeping with the sound Persephonia typically represent.

Suiyôbi No Campanella slightly higher than 39th, success!

Persephonia managed to avoid the bottom 5 just about in BJSC LXXVII, finishing 36th with Suiyôbi No Campanella's 'Shakushain'. It did squander our hopes of consecutive top 10s once again - we're still yet to follow any of our 8 top 10 finishers with another one - but that was never on the table anyway so we'll take what we can get. We were predicting 39th so 36th is GOOD NEWS.

'Shakushain' received 137 points which included a maximum 18 from Isconia - the second time this year we've received Isconia's top points - and 13 points each from Daehun and Patvia. 19 countries in total voted for the song. We thank you all for making this contest not as disastrous as it was for Syndare.

Despite this poor showing in the final, it was also revealed that the song was as high as 9th in semi-final 2, though its qualification was far from secure even then as it received 65 points, only 9 more than the song placed 20th and 11 more than the song placed 21st (so thanks to Séyetana giving us a 12 in the semi-final to secure our qualification :D)

Final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

After going without a win for years, Aquafina have now joined the ranks of the elite (Mdiče, FSR Rontvia and Aeroche) in achieving 2 consecutive wins, as they won in their own contest with 2013 track 'Safe With You' by Alex Metric and Jacques Lu Cont featuring Malin. Unlike the last two contests which had a very clear runaway winner, Aquafina's second victory was very closely fought throughout the results reveal and there was ultimately just 6 points between the top 3 and 4 between the top 2. 'Safe With You' won with 357 points - and although that is a long way off the points record set by 'Easy Love' last month, it did give Aquafina another new record, receiving points from 43 different countries (compared to only 39 for Sigala) to beat the previous record of 41 set two months ago by Kylienips (Meg Myers - Sorry) and #00274E (CamelPhat feat. A*M*E - Paradigm).

It was rather the A-List top 3 in Aquafina, as the top 3 were completed by Aeroche and Altyr Muunilinst. Aeroche had been the favourite to win with Ponibbi's 'HEARTSKIP' and came extremely close to delivering on the hype, coming 2nd with 353 points. This was a second top 3 in a row and a third top 10 in a row for the 5-time winners. Altyr Muunilinst had suffered 4 consecutive contests without cracking the top 10 but did come 11th in each of the last two contests. They returned to the top tier this month with a 3rd place finish for Koven's 'Get This Right' on 351 points, continuing the hit rate for the TOKEN DRUM N BASS HIT, a tradition started by Persephonia (<3). It's also a startlingly similar result to last month where Aeroche sent the similarly named Kove who also came 3rd with the token drum n bass hit. Illuminati.

Cor Lupus won their first ever semi-final but had to settle for 4th place in the final with their fourth entry 'Savages' by Five Knives, continuing to build on their final result each time. 'Savages' received 334 points. Cor Lupus have just been announced as cohosts for BJSC LXXVIII alongside Aquafina as a results of this success. Jayrusalem's latest comeback was another major success (and they have the NERVE to moan about 'Jaycism' ny2) as they earned a third top 5 hit, all of which have been exactly 5th. Bonnie Anderson's 'Unbroken' matched their 5th place peak on 278 points.

After years of going barely appreciated (having failed to make the final with 21 out of 27 of their entries, including all of the first 13) Singerpurear finally broke through in a big way this month, earning not only their first top 20 but their first top 10 with Sandra's '(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena' finishing 6th. In true Singerpurear style it was a rather NON-STANDARD entry, being a song from 1985, but thankfully this didn't impede the track's cruise to success, smashing their national record of 21st set by Friendly Fires' 'Hurting'. Singerpurear won a tiebreak for 6th with Hendinia's entry 'Friday Night' by GFOTY which marked a third consecutive top 10 hit for them in 7th, while Ramrynia earned a second consecutive top 10 with EVVY's 'Tidal Wave' in 8th. The top 10 was completed by Hushkanukia's second top 10 hit to date, Jillette Johnson's 'Torpedo' in 9th, and Danaelanda who had no top 10 hits at all until this year but picked up their third this month with a 10th place finish for KSHMR's 'Jammu'.

Beaverdonia would have set a new national record and a first top 10 with FLETCHER's 'War Paint' but they did not submit their votes so they were subject to a 33% deduction and finished 25th. A couple of other countries besides Singerpurear did set new national records though, with Land of DW and Ultraviolenceland also achieving their first top 20 hits. Land of DW came 11th with Sam Bruno's 'Search Party' and Ultraviolenceland managed 18th with Alexa Goddard's 'We Broke The Sky' (yes, Alexa Goddard got through the veto - never again). While not a record Quintessa's 16th place finish with Woolf And The Wondershow's 'Cloaked' also contributed to a refreshing list of top 20 countries.

Four countries entered for the first time this month but Frandoot, Joedonia and Pupok all failed to qualify for the final. Summericia's debut entry 'Parade' by Tungevaag & Raaban was the only one to make the cut, finishing 32nd in the final. There were quite a few returning nations this month as well, the most successful being Jayrusalem as already mentioned but several others also made the final - New Lexico came 14th with Kesh You's ethnic jam 'Rıyzamın', Farahtyn had a much more successful comeback than their last attempt (which came last in the semi-final), coming 15th this time with Benjamin's 'Young And Restless', Sandénia came 29th with GJan's 'One More Drink' and Jukianië 35th with Raye's 'Bet U Wish'. Avalonia's return made a false start with 2 DNQs but they made the final this time, their 2nd qualifier to date, coming 28th with Wrathschild's 'Mars'.

All but one of the countries in the final passed the 100 point mark this month, with the unfortunate wooden spoon going to Syndare (who came very close to the mark, earning 97 points) with Lena Fayre's 'Do You Like That?', finishing 42nd out of 42.

Persephonia voted as follows in this month's final and semi-final 2:

(just can't stop shading Rich :shakingcheeseblock: )

In other news, the kitten is very soon to be unleashed on Worldvision. Don't say we didn't warn you.

One half of Brade snatching that coveted 36th position two months in a row, when will your faves. (Maybe we can turn the back-to-back 36th's into wins the following two months? mwahaha *comes 41st*). Decent finish for something that niche anyway, especially that top 10 placing in the semi! A great discovery for me as per usual, keeping Persephonia in the lead of Jadakissnian's points distribution list once again. Yaaaaay x

Edited by Jade

This was a great track indeed.

36th out of 42. Lower than I expected this to do. Finished this to finish higher, Bre.

Usfland did give this great track 10 points.

All the best for the next contest.

omg that shade you always through to my entries tho.

Shuu re-purr-esent Persephonia at Worldvision

The Worldvision spinoff has kicked off in Sandebörg so we can now reveal our entry (our tenth spinoff entry in all including 3 BJFestivalen entries and the re-entries of Beat Connection and Wonder Villains to the 'Your Best of' contests). As previously reported Persephonia were allocated Thailand for the spinoff, and from the slim pickings available we have selected Thai girl group Shuu to send to the contest with the track 'Khae Miao (Just Kitten)', or 'แค่เหมียว (Just Kitten)' if you insist on the alien symbols the Thais call an alphabet.

It's the most overtly pop hoe/sellout entry we've provided to any BJSC event to date so regular supporters of Persephonia entries BEWARE, this is much more reminiscent of those terrible old Daehun entries (in fact the song and its video have been directly accused of ripping off K-Pop group 9MUSES who represented Daehun in the past). But it's a bit of good trashy fun. Honest.

I'm really going to have to keep an eye out on Thailand for standard entries if this is anything to go by. I've wandered over there occasionally but not been grabbed by anything. This is good though, you're selling it short.

(yess Yu we converted Bré to Thai-Pop, next step, the other Asians)
