Breaking news: Hushkanukians ordered to leave country

 

It has been reported that the Persephonian government is forcing all people of Hushkanukian origin in Persephonia to return home or risk being incarcerated. When asked why this decision was made, government officials responded with "they're skets, they're all butterz skets".

tiny deaths make a big splash in the Ocean of Cor Lupus. (Also, they're our BJSC entry)

 

For the second time this year the Persephonian BJSC Committee has dug into the back catalogue of rejected former potentials due to a lack of inspiring new output. The strategy worked with Audrey Napoleon (and massively worked the previous time we did this, with Jay Dabhi) so there is hope we can deliver again. To some extent at least.

 

Therefore after a good year of being considered but ultimately rejected, Minneapolis synth-pop/dream-pop/something-or-other-pop duo tiny deaths are finally flying the flag for Persephonia in BJSC LXXVIII, jointly hosted by Aquafina and Cor Lupus. The song, 'Ocean', is the lead track from their self-titled September 2014 EP and is like really good and stuff. It features some cool synthamajiggery and sparse but impactful vocals. It also comes with a captivating video as we always like to provide. Check it out below and if you like it (and are in semi-final 2) do chuck us a few points <3

 

 

The PBJSCC is also clearing out its potential list a bit as 3 current and former potential artists of ours have showed up in this contest - Grace Mitchell's 'Jitter', which we had lined up as a possible 'kinda cheap but w/e' entry for next month, is representing Fljótavík; Slow Magic's 'Girls', which was also a potential at various points over the last year or so, has finally shown up representing Terra Avium; and Kiiara's 'Tennessee' has cropped up under the flag of Oslol, crossing her other song 'Gold' off our potentials list. Because we couldn't be caught recycling an artist. That'd be just awful.

Synthamajiggery is usually always a winner for me <3 Really quite liking this though as you know, a shame we're in separate semis again but I'm sure you'll be just fine. Sleigh mi hole. x

Shuu somehow come top 10 in Worldvision; history repeats for Jadakissnia

 

The PBJSCC's gamble with ultra cheap, ultra trashy Asian pop worked out better than anyone could have predicted as Shuu's 'Khae Miao (Just Kitten)' somehow finished as high as 8th out of the 49 songs in the Worldvision spinoff in Sandebörg. Other nations have a lot to answer for. Especially Cor Lupus, the ever changing nation now going by 'FKA π', Quintessa and Séyetana who each gave the song 15 points, and Daehun who gave it 13. In all seriousness though thanks to those countries and the other that threw a few points our way (we received 151 points in all) to secure our first ever top 10 finish in a 'regular' spinoff (i.e. excluding BJFestivalen and the year end contests). Thanks also to Hendinia for not voting therefore pushing us up an extra place.

 

Also pushed up an extra place by Hendinia not voting was our good friends Jadakissnia, which would not be such unusual news if it weren't for the fact it marks a second occurrence of Hendinia receiving the most points in a spinoff but losing out to Jadakissnia due to receiving a points deduction. History does repeat itself. So Jadakissnia maintain a 100% record of spinoff wins, albeit both times by default, with their entry 'To The Ocean' by SOLDOUT (representing Belgium) scoring 205 points to win. Hendinia represented South Korea and sent Girl's Day's 'Ring My Bell' which took in 209 points but after a 33% deduction they crashed all the way to 11th for the official result.

 

The official top 5 included a rather eclectic bunch of real countries: Egypt, Iran, Ukraine and Vietnam. Espen came 2nd with Egyptian trance duo Aly & Fila's 'Underwater' with 195 points, N DNTN grabbed a bronze with Iranian Nadya's 'Refugee' receiving 190 points, Kluminican Republic beat us in the war of trashy girlband pop with Ukrainian NikitA's 'Avocado' 4th on 163 points and Unovia beat us in the war of Southeast Asian pop with Vietnamese Đông Nhi's 'Bad Boy' 5th on 161 points. So dammit, we can't even claim to have won on either of those fronts. At least we won... highest Thai act? Let's go with that.

tiny deaths dive into the final

 

Persephonia have successfully made it to a 5th final in a row (and an 18th in the last 19) with tiny deaths' 'Ocean' qualifying from Semi-Final 2 of BJSC LXXVIII. The song will therefore feature in the grand final in Pixies, Aquafina.

 

This is incidentally our 30th entry to qualify through a semi-final (our 41st finalist in all, but that includes the seven One Big Final contests of XXVI-XXXII, the autoqualifier by way of semi-finals being canceled in LXIV and three autoqualifiers earnt by prior top 2 finishes). This round number gives us an excuse to report some new fun stats we calculated, looking at which of our entries outperformed their projected finish and which underperformed. Well it's just a top 29 at the moment as 'Ocean' is TBC but whatever. It's fun, it's stats, let's post it.

'Tide: The Paradox Effect' marks by far our best improvement from semi-final results, finishing in the top 5 after being projected only low top 20. On the other end of the spectrum, 'The Return' was project top 5 but only scraped the top 25. Our last entry 'Shakushain' also underperformed significantly, matching the magnitude of the difference for 'Tide: The Paradox Effect' in the opposite direction. Only one of our entries has done exactly as predicted, while 14 each have done better and worse. Nice and symmetrical :magic:

'Miracles' is incidentally 3rd among all songs, after +28 for Audien/Parson James 'Insomnia' and +27 for Sandra '(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena'. The rest of the top 5 are also very recent (+24 each for Asta/Allday 'Dynamite' and LION BABE 'Treat Me Like Fire'), as the expanded finals make these sort of movements more likely.
