I had no idea what to expect from a guy who incorporated SpongeBob into one of his songs but this entry is really good! I'm glad you stumbled across this guy actually as it seems he's pretty much unknown with such small views on those songs! Is probably super cool for him to be getting this little bit of attention. WD on that SoundCloud follow also *.* Hope this does well for you as it's a complete banger. Up with psytrance :music:

(and brilliant write up of the latest main contest as ever! <3)

That SpongeBob one would have gotten 18 from me instantly

Damn xx Well I hope you appreciate the psytrance-ness anyway. Lol.

Persephonian News Bulletin ~ 17/05/2016

Persephonia goes Arabic again to celebrate a (BJSC) year since A-WA

BJSC LXXXIV has kicked off in Windevale, Cadelicia and we can thus now announce our entry. Persephonia will be represented in our 63rd main contest by the Lebanese born (though now living in France, having emigrated there as a child) jazz musician Bachar Mar-Khalifé with 'Mirror Moon', an album track from his second studio album 'Who's Gonna Get The Ball From Behind The Wall Of The Garden Today?' originally released in 2013.

The song is mostly based around its rather ~frantic~ piano-heavy instrumentation which gradually builds throughout the song, with occasional interruptions from Khalifé, singing in Arabic, quite softly at first but building up to quite a loud and emotional climax. His vocals are probably a bit of an acquired taste especially near the end but we hope that won't put too many of you off the song completely :magic: We're in semi-final 1 and only need to make the top 20 out of 30 songs to qualify so fingers crossed another risk can pay off.

Sadly the song lacks a music video so we can't keep up our run of sending great videos as well as great songs (insert people disputing both of those things here), although we can claim as an unofficial video this pretty impressive live performance.

The Persephonian BJSC Committee decided on sending Khalifé quite early on but took a while to decide between three of his songs. Did we make the right choice?? If anyone else besides the people we sent these to feels like listening to the other ones, we're posting them here too because we'd have liked to send all 3 of these. Maybe check them out if you enjoy 'Mirror Moon'. x

A few quick stats/fun facts: this is our sixth entirely foreign language main contest entry to date (our second this year as well as one instrumental, making 'C.U.R.E.' our only 2016 main contest entry to feature any English so far #WarOnEnglish) and our second Arabic entry following last year's winner 'Habib Galbi' by A-WA. Arabic is the first language besides English that we've sent more than once. Counting Khalifé as Lebanese, he provides the 15th different lead artist nationality among our main contest entries and our 20th including another five from spinoffs - see the full breakdown in this hit thread. Finally, we believe this may be our first entry to have actual instruments behind it (at least without some sort of electronic accompaniment) since Orphic Oxtra 28 contests ago. Fun.

This is a great entry from you (even if 'Ya Nas' was my fave of the three) ~ a shame I don't have the opportunity to help you out so I hope this qualifies! Yay for Persephonian riskiness x

First DNQ of 2016 </3

In bad news that we will summarily bury with good news in the same post, Persephonia failed to qualify for the final of BJSC LXXXIV with Bachar Mar-Khalifé's 'Mirror Moon', our 18th DNQ out of 63 entries and ending a streak of 3 qualifiers. It ultimately finished 25th out of 30 in semi-final 1 with 31 points, 14 short of the threshold to qualify. 31 points is the same as our last DNQ 'Kyoto' but in a semi-final with slightly fewer voters so it is just ahead of that in our all-time entry rank, 58th out of 63 (see post 4 of this thread).

Thanks anyway to the countries that did give some points to 'Mirror Moon' - a surprisingly high 10, the joint highest of the songs that failed to qualify this month. Terra Avium were our biggest supporters awarding the song 10 points, followed by Desbuanda who gave it 5 points, and then four countries each gave it 3 points (Botanikka, Danaelanda, Ingermanlandia and Séyetana) and 1 point (Fljótavík, Kylienips, Oslol and Usfland). Here's to the Rejects? :P

In better news, most of Persephonian voters' favourite songs did make the final, with only our 2 and 1 pointers (Summericia and Kluminican Republic) dropping out with us from semi-final 1 and only Skall not qualifying out of the top 10 in our semi-final 2 straw poll (where they came 7th).

And in better news still...

A second Worldvision top 10 as Mudlam matches Persephonia's spinoff peak

Following poor showings in the Movies spinoff and the BuzzJack 10th Anniversary not-technically-a-spinoff-contest-thingy, Persephonia have returned to form and made the top 10 again, our fifth top 10 to date in a non-BJFestivalen spinoff following the four in a row we had prior to the Movies disaster.

In Worldvision II, the results of which came out this evening, Mudlam's 'Muck' representing us and Malta finished in fourth place with 174 points, making us one of three countries (alongside Hushkanukia and Unovia) to come top 10 in both editions of Worldvision and also matching our highest spinoff finish (again excluding BJFestivalen) previously achieved by SEXWITCH's 'Kassidat El Hakka' in the Halloween spinoff. It was also only four points off matching the points total 'Kassidat El Hakka' achieved (which thus remains our highest points total in a spinoff).

We had mainly been hoping for the support of dance bloc stalwarts Danaelanda and Ethanola in entering 'Muck' and weren't expecting too wide an appeal outside of that, and indeed its support was very top heavy with nearly all of its votes being 11 points or more (in fact it 'only' received 15 votes in total, just one more than our floppy Movies entry). It just turned out to have a few more supporters than we expected. No complaints there! xx Danaelanda and Ethanola indeed both supported 'Muck' heavily, giving it their full 18 points, while it received a third set of 18 from Mulgracia. It also ranked in the medal positions for five other countries, receiving 15 each from Aeroche and Terra Avium and 13 each from Cadelicia, Cor Lupus and Deandria. To complete the high scores it received, Jadakissnia and Medhelnia awarded it 12 points and Trifoski awarded it 11. Finally, it also received 9 from Espen, 4 from Skall, 2 from Flynnonda and 1 from Vülkyria. Thanks to all for helping us get a success to immediately forget about flopping in the main contest! :music:

We have personally informed Mudlam aka Volfym of his success in the contest. Keeping an eye out to see if he responds to us again on SoundCloud. x

Ahead of us there was somewhat of a runaway top 3, which held the medal positions from an early stage in the reveal but swapped around between themselves a few times during. The eventual winner was Unovia's entry 'No Hero' by Elisa (representing Italy), topping the list with a very impressive 245 points including 7 18s. That marks Unovia's first BJSC spinoff win (their previous best performance was 5th place in Worldvision I, while they have a peak of 3rd in the main contest and previously won last year's edition of 'The Best of BJSC' with Grace's 'You Don't Own Me' (feat. G-Eazy)). The host nation Hushkanukia only narrowly missed out on a win on home turf - they represented Switzerland with It Takes A Village's 'Children Of The Digital' and came 2nd with 240 points. Quintessa were lucky enough to draw Sweden and not waste the opportunity, entering the excellent 'One Hundred Years, Ten Thousand Beats' by Navet which finished third with 204 points. Completing the top 5 behind our entry was Altyr Muunilinst with Rebeka Dremelj's 'Tašča' (representing Slovenia) with 157 points.

There were also somewhat surprise but very welcome top 10 positions for Skall, who continued their recent trend of sending long dance songs and this time did as well as 6th with Legowelt's 'Experiential Awakening' representing the Netherlands, and Deandria who managed 10th place with Hungarian Holdviola's 'Vágta'. Slightly less surprisingly filling out the top 10 all in a tiebreak for 7th to 9th were Cor Lupus/Romania (Radio Killer's 'Feelings'), Pupok/Australia (The Cat Empire's 'Wolves') and Danaelanda/Belarus (Arston's 'Light').

Here is how Persephonia ranked the international selection:

18 Skall // Legowelt - Experiential Awakening

15 Jadakissnia // Epelit - Flippaa & Kriippaa

13 Cadelicia // Saad Lamjarred - Lm3allem

12 Ethanola // Sami Baha - Mavericks One

11 Trifoski // Monteniggers - So I Tekila

10 Aeroche // Samaris - Wanted 2 Say

9 Quintessa // Navet - One Hundred Years, Ten Thousand Beats

8 Pupok // The Cat Empire - Wolves

7 Espen // Carla's Dreams - Te Rog

6 Danaelanda // Arston - Light

5 Unovia // Elisa - No Hero

4 Taahino // Anarchicks - We Claim The Right

3 Deandria // Holdviola - Vágta

2 Avalonia // Jelena Rozga - Život Je Čudo

1 Bignia-Zaragovina // HouseTwins - I Will Be King (feat. Tyler Fiore)

Fljótavík // Void Camp - Dead Bodies

Republic of Adonia // Julian Le Play - Rollercoaster

Kluminican Republic // Xhensila Myrtezai - Da Da Da

Hushkanukia // It Takes A Village - Children Of The Digital

Séyetana // Alisia - Moy

New Lexico // Sofi Mkheyan - 2012

Land of DW // Nyusha - Tol'ko...

Terra Avium // TIX and The Pøssy Project - East High 2016

Hendinia // Sound Messengers - Love Me

Ramrynia // Chen Aharoni - Crazy

Sandebörg // Liis Lemsalu - Fire

Ultraviolenceland // Line and Basim - Brænder Inde

FSR Rontvia // L-NARA - Ha Ha

Medhelnia // Ivi Adamou - A*G*A*P*I (Crashing Down)

Cor Lupus // Radio Killer - Feelings

(Federal Republic of) Ashton // Lauris Reiniks and Aisha - Pasakā

Flynnonda // Alice Jemima - Liquorice

(FKA) п // Namika - Lieblingsmensch (Übernice Remix)

Mulgracia // Anabela - Noćna Patrola

Greenfroze // Seka Aleksić - Crnooka

Vülkyria // Geronimo - Possédés

Altyr Muunilinst // Rebeka Dremelj - Tašča

A huge shame about the DNQ. But very cool that you got some fab news so soon after *.* Congrats on your best finish in a spinoff to date with a real banger of a song! :cheer: I was surprised but so pleased to see it smash into the top 5. <3

Thanks for the 15 points also, a very strong contest for Jadaphonia!

God I love these write-ups. Should I take on the challenge of reading all the ones I've previously been too lazy to read? (I'm guessing there's a lot) :P

Well done on a pleasantly surprising top 5 position in Worldvision spinoff! (and thanks muchly for three points also)

Well there are plenty of them in this thread (and in my previous national thread as well) if ever you feel like reading through endless paragraphs of geek stats and such :kink:

I'm really pleased that Holdviola did so well for you! It was a very lovely song but I thought it was going to end up being rather underappreciated like 'Álmatlan' was. Things looking up for Deandria again *.* x

BJSC LXXXIV final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

(feat. lots of super fun geek stats)

The winner of BJSC LXXXIV in Cadelicia was 'Save It' by Salt Ashes, representing FARC. FARC joined under the name of Kellyana Kingdom in the early days of the contest and originally had a best performance of third place before vanishing for 45 contests. They made their grand return, under their new name, in the 62nd contest and were immediately welcomed back with their first win with SOHN's 'Artifice'. They've entered nearly every contest since then and had several further top 10 hits including a second place with Paulini's 'Air It All Out' (7th Heaven Radio Edit) which was only a few points short of the win, but it has taken until now for them to get their second victory. And they did it this time in a far more crushing fashion than they did with 'Artifice' - that only led the second placed song by 2 points, but the margin of victory for 'Save It' was a massive 133 (the largest points difference between the top 2 ever, albeit inflated by the adoption since their comeback of the 18 point system). Its points haul of 465 is the second highest ever, behind the 477 achieved by Sigala's 'Easy Love' in BJSC LXXVI. 'Save It' did however beat the record held by Aquafina's other winner - it received points from 44 different countries in the final, one more than the record of 43 set by Alex Metric and Jacques Lu Cont's 'Safe With You' (feat. Malin). It also beat the record held by Kathaldazian entry 'Silly Boy' by Eva Simons since BJSC XIX for the highest points total in a semi-final (with 173, compared to 170 for 'Silly Boy'). Finally, it received 44.54% of the available points from other countries, the seventh highest proportion achieved in BJSC history. All of these achievements of course dwarf those of the previous BJSC entries from Salt Ashes - she came 15th in BJSC LXVIII with 'If You Let Me Go' representing Hendinia, and more recently came 38th in the first contest of this year featuring on Vülkyrian entry 'Give It Up' by Cruels. 'Save It' received over twice as many points as those two songs combined.

Not to be overshadowed by FARC's impressive achievements, the autoqualifying nation Yehesi came 2nd with Rochelle's 'All Night Long', with 332 points. That gave them a third consecutive top 3 finish, a huge turnaround in their fortunes as they'd previously only even come top 10 twice, and never top 5. This matches the record held by Aeroche (who have achieved it twice), Daehun and Numayania for most consecutive medal positions. These three successes (and of course some contribution from their first entry of the year, MariahLynn's 'Once Upon A Time' which came 35th) have given them a large early lead in the year to date rankings - they have already smashed through the four figure mark with 1,135 points in total for 2016, 210 more than closest rivals Aeroche. There was a familiar face next to Yehesi in the top 3: two contests ago Yehesi finished 3rd just behind Vülkyria, and this contest saw the reverse happening as Vülkyria came 3rd with The Flavor's 'Shosholoza' (another 2016 foreign language success!) with a total of 312 points, majorly bouncing back from coming second to last in the previous contest with their autoqualifier.

The top 5 was completed by the two countries with the most top 5 finishes in BJSC history. Aeroche claimed their 19th top 5 success with Polyna's 'Angel' (Club Mix) coming 4th with 283 points - which also gave them an 8th semi-final win to tie the record held by Altyr Muunilinst - while FSR Rontvia had a bit of a surprise major success with KOLAJ's 'The Touch' coming 5th with 274 points, their 27th top 5 hit. Aeroche and FSR Rontvia also jointly hold the record for most top 5s in semi-finals, both adding a 26th in this contest.

Pupok fell just short of three straight 5th placers, instead coming 6th with Rich White Ladies' 'Wimbledon'. Host nation Cadelicia didn't get a chance to auto-qualify, but there was no need for them anyway, as they followed up their biggest hit to date with their second biggest hit to date, coming 7th with 'Hate' by 4Minute. Also achieving a second consecutive top 10 hit was Séyetana, the kings of tiebreaks around the #10 spot, who finished 9th in a three-way tiebreak from 8th to 10th with 'The Call Of The Mountains' by Eluveitie. Also in that tiebreak were New Lexico who came 8th with their anniversary 50th entry 'Ashes Of My Paradise' by Kelly Sweet, a semi-notorious veto from back in the day, and Terra Avium who came 10th with Hiatus' 'Precious Little', an ~emotional~ dull piano instrumental which has been released as a charity single raising funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians. If only BJSC points counted as donations.

The only debuting country in this contest, Aelandor, fell short of qualifying with debut entry 'Into Your Veins' by Five Iron Frenzy. There were no returning nations this time (meaning total entry numbers dropped perilously close to the dreaded scenario of reverting to smaller semi-finals due to the banned nations from the previous contest, gah!!1) Therefore we will use this slot to mention that Cor Lupus also DNQed with Atlas Genius' 'Stockholm'. This has been a paid advertisement for Cor Lupus' entries. :D We will also note that after entering 11 of the previous 12 contests and not qualifying for the final a single time during that bleak stretch, Usfland at last made it through again with SONDR's 'Surviving' (feat. Joe Cleere), which came 30th in the final.

3 countries yet to achieve a first top 10 hit either matched or beat their peaks. St. Burbia matched their peak of 13th (they seem to do their best in contests where we DNQ ;o) with Bearson's 'Want You' (feat. Cal). Taahino's best finish until this year was 19th with their debut entry but they have edged closer to a top 10 hit in 2016, and set a new peak for the third time in four contests with Icon For Hire's 'Now You Know' coming 14th, one place higher than Crystalyne's 'Punks Don't Dance' two contests ago. We suspect their first main contest top 10 hit cannot be far away now. Finally, Beaverdonia didn't quite live up to some initial hype (including from us, whoops) with Gia's 'Only A Girl' but still set a new peak of 16th (though it should of course be noted that they'd have come top 10 with FLETCHER's 'War Paint' if they hadn't failed to vote in that contest's final).

All but four countries managed at least 100 points in this contest, but those that fell short did so by quite a lot (38th placed Dobago had 'only' 80 points). The wooden spoon went to Tartford's entry 'Reaction' by Alex Gaudino and Jerma, coming 41st out of 41 points with 59 points, the lowest score in a final since the adoption of the 18 point system exactly 10 contests ago. Come on guys, it deserved a bit better than that! x

how much do we have to pay you to mention Danaelanda's continued top 25 slayage then? (three contests in a row finishing top 25 but not top 20 must be some kind of record)

Afraid not, that particular obscure record is held by Fljótavík with a run of 24-25-24-21 in BJSCs 53-56. Maybe I'll try and dig for an obscure reason to mention your next entry though. xx

I thought we agreed that WorldVision II was the real contest

We did tbh. x

oh don't worry, you won't have to find an obscure reason to mention us, cos we're going to win this time xox :)

Hello! Seeing as you're the go to guy for statistics might I enquire what's the record for improvement in x number of contests from debut? And how does my 5 compete (now the run is overwhelmingly over )

This turned out to be a bit more difficult to find from my spreadsheet than expected! Might have actually been quicker to literally just look through every single country's 'chart run' but it does appear that Dobago are the first country to do better with each of their first 5 entries! The following managed it with their first 4:

Cor Lupus 31-13-07-04

Farahtyn SF15-26-17-03

Inner Massivia SF20-SF15-SF14-05

Quintessa SF21-SF18-SF17-SF16 (at least they qualified eventually! although not until a few years after this original run...)

Torchwood SF15-SF13-15-02

Umiiruka SF22-11-09-03

I would be drawing with Dobago if you allowed it to be 'better or equal' :magic: (SF17-22-14-14-10 - both those 14ths have the same number of points as well)

It took me long enough to get my head around what primitive Excel formulae I'd need to find the original record without that additional complication :kink:

Although on a similar note I found while digging for this stat ~ The record for most times setting a new personal best (not necessarily with consecutive entries) is jointly held by Caerfyrddia and Ultraviolenceland who have both done it 8 times (Ultraviolenceland going SF20-SF15-SF27-SF27-SF26-34-25-SF30-24-18-22-22-15-11-SF22-11-32 for example as I feel like I explained that a bit clunkily). Impressive record for Ultraviolenceland to hold considering they still haven't had a top 10.

(Persephonia are just behind with 7, although of course we're not able to add to that any more  Danaelanda, Quintessa and Yehesi have also done it 7 times).

((I like how my national thread basically doubles as a stats for geeks thread))
