Persephonian News Bulletin ~ 13/06/2016

 

Color [sic] Guard represent Persephonia in BJSC LXXXV

 

For the 85th edition of BJSC, which is being jointly hosted by FARC, Aeroche and Unovia following the former's win last month (with the semi-finals having just kicked off in Aeroche), Persephonia have placed their hopes of a return to the final on American indie-pop/synthpop quintet Color Guard (we wish we could editorialise that band name to spell the word 'colour' correctly but ALAS x) with 'In Your Bones', our 64th main contest entry.

 

The band have some older material kicking around under their previous name The Stationary Set, but 'In Your Bones' is currently their only song under the new name, and is the first single from their forthcoming yet-to-be-titled "debut" EP. It's one of Persephonia's poppier entries to date, equipped with a catchy chorus and some lovely synths in the verses (the track was produced by Andy Baldwin who has previously worked with the likes of previous BJSC artists of varying success St. Lucia and HAERTS, according to their SoundCloud). It also comes with a colourful and ~wavey~ video which looks surprisingly high budget for a band that has less than 4,000 views on YouTube at present. Check it out below ~

 

 

The song has been drawn 28th out of 30 in semi-final 2. Saving the best for (near) last??? I suppose we shall just have to wait and see ;o

Color Guard bring us back to the final

 

As we had hoped (although some doubts crept in close to reveal time ~), Persephonia are back in a BJSC final again after last month's DNQ as we have progressed with Color Guard's 'In Your Bones' becoming our 46th finalist (35th to pass through the semi-final stage). Expectations are quite low for the final now but we are satisfied enough to have avoided the dreaded fate of consecutive DNQs not seen since BJSCs LIV through LVI. Thank you to those who voted for us in the semi-final! 'In Your Bones' has been drawn in the seventh performance slot in the grand final of BJSC LXXXV, being held in Castenillia, Unovia.

 

Persephonian voters' standout top 6 from semi-final 2 all qualified as well, as did our one pointer. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to the other three songs we awarded points - Nneka's 'Soul Is Heavy' (Espen), Megan McCauley's 'Die For You' (Harmonica) and Said The Sky's 'Nostalgia' (feat. Missio) (Aelandor) which received our 4, 3 and 2 points respectively. </3 Over in semi-final 1, nine out of ten of the songs that made the non-binding straw poll top 10 of the Persephonian public qualified as well, only losing seventh placed Flynnonda with LKA's 'TURBULENCE'.

 

Aeroche qualified to a 13th consecutive final, both the current longest qualification streak and Aeroche's longest qualification streak to date (with the continuing asterisk that #00274E's enviable run of finalists is still active, with their last 17 entries all having made the final, but not all in consecutive contests).

 

Preparations already in place for the next contest

 

With the Persephonian BJSC Committee satisfied to have made the final of the current contest, it is already preparing to shift its focus to the next one. A song has already been internally selected and the PBJSCC are reportedly very excited to bring it to the contest. Watch this space. *.*

Color Guard give us our second biggest hit of the year

 

We are pleasantly surprised to report that Color Guard's 'In Your Bones' didn't do too badly in the final of BSC LXXXV after all despite whatever tiny amount of hype it had disappearing very quickly, as it gave us our third top 20 hit of the year (26th in total) and our second highest finish of the year to date, coming 16th with a total of 178 points (losing a tiebreak for 15th place with Unovia's entry). This was just short of our second highest points total of the year though (which remains the 180 points earned by Digitalism's 'Blitz'). Perhaps the best news to come from this is that it's finally another new unique position for us, our first ever 16th place song *.* leaving only positions 7-12 plus 18 and 20 to collect from the top 20.

 

Many thanks and much appreciation to the 21 countries who voted for us this month, especially the 7 who ranked it in their top 3 - Mulgracia and Quintessa gave it the top honours of 18 points, Suedeonia and Summericia gave it 15 points and Brechtoria, FARC and Taahino all gave it 13. And we finally broke into the Ramrynian votes again too (albeit with only 3 points), for only the third time ever and the first time in 28 contests. Even the most stubborn of haters give into our taste eventually *.*

 

'In Your Bones' was another big improver from its projected final position for us, as it only came 15th in semi-final 2 with 57 points, enough to be projected just 31st. That 15 place improvement is our joint best ever alongside Dawn Richard's 19-4 progression. It's not the craziest discrepancy found this month though, as quite a few countries ended up over 20 places either way from their projected finish, indicating some very abnormally imbalanced semi-finals. Such is life.

Paragon of Good Music, Protector Against the Bad Music and Otherwise Taste, Beaverdoniaimpacktnationsummerwinterbloomfruits #1 Country and Highway Song (aka Beaverdonia) got off to a slow start in BJSC with their first entry by a Greek artist 12 contests ago (the ever iconic 'I Kamíla' by Mazoo And The Zoo), but that error has now been fixed as they secure the first ever Greek BJSC winner with Bang La Decks' 'Aide' storming to victory in Unovia with a total of 333 points. It marks the first time the nation has ever officially made the top 10, after they famously lost out on a top 10 position with FLETCHER's 'War Paint' in BJSC LXXVII due to failing to submit final votes, meaning their previous biggest hit was technically their last entry 'Only A Girl' by Gia which came 16th. Some people seem to be classifying it as an instrumental in which case it is the second instrumental winner of the main contest following our own 'Cry For Freedom', however it does feature vocals throughout, mostly just the title being repeated. The next contest has already kicked off in Beaverdam, the capital city of Beaverdonia. Hype levels at an all time high in Persephonia and across the BuzzJack world. (Incidentally in the same month as Beaverdonia finally got a top 10, another country 'did a FLETCHER', as the latest comeback by the nation now going by FKA FKA π, LUH's '$ORO', received enough points to finish 7th but ultimately came 26th as they failed to submit votes and are thus subject to another one month ban).

 

Second place also went to a first time big hitter, although one that hasn't been waiting quite as long. Medhelnia's first two entries didn't make the final but their first qualifier, Parade Of Lights' 'Feeling Electric' did it emphatically, winning semi-final 2 comfortably and coming 2nd in the final with 303 points, marking a massive turnaround after their last entry came dead last in its semi-final (Tinnmark pulled off a similar feat last year between the 75th and 76th contests). The more 'experienced' N DNTN, who PersepBet eventually settled on being the favourites to win after previously tipping Beaverdonia (oops), claimed the bronze medal with 253 points for Plaitum's 'Jagwa', which followed the same act winning Unknown Pleasures for the same poster earlier this year with their previous track 'LMHY'. #00274E had their first big hit of the year so far with Infinity Ink's 'How Do I Love You' (feat. Yasmin) coming 4th with 248 points, while New Lexico claimed back to back top 10 hits for the first time in their history, with Celtic Woman's 'Tír Na nÓg' (feat. Oonagh) coming 5th with 245 points. In fact they have come top 10 with 3 of their last 4 entries, after 'only' having six top 10 finishes to their credit prior to that in a run stretching back to BJSC V, though with a few gaps including one of 21 contests in the meantime.

 

Pupok's new found consistency continued into a fourth contest in a row as they came 6th with the... controversial? novelty entry 'Daddy Says No' by Haschak Sisters coming 6th giving them a run of 5-5-6-6 in the last four contests. It also took home the prize of most 18s, with a total of six top scores. Reports are that Pupok are returning to 100% serious entries for the next contest despite Beaverdam hosting clearly calling for a continuation. x Aeroche got a second top 10 in a row with a 7th place finish for the oshi Redo of Kali Uchis' 'Ridin Round' (feat. Tory Lanez), winning a tiebreak with Jadakissnia who came 8th with OVERWERK's spoopy instrumental 'Toccata'. Both countries have, like New Lexico, had three top 10 hits out of a possible five in 2016 so far. Meanwhile, The Actual Republic of Bellamia have just reached three top 10 hits in total since their debut, with their 43rd entry 'High' by Jesper Jenset coming 9th. Returning nation (also after a ban last month) Hendinia have had more than ten times as many top 10s, as their 10th place finish with Mike Perry's 'The Ocean' (feat. Shy Martin) (tipped for future UK hit status and originally a favourite to win this contest) gives them 32 top 10 hits in total.

 

Taahino and Ultraviolenceland's quests for a first top 10 hit continue as both of them once again came top 20 but not quite top 10 (the fifth top 20 hit for both). Taahino came 14th with Beautiful Bodies' 'Capture & Release' to equal their best finish to date which they set last month, while Ultraviolenceland came 20th with Ana Mena's 'No Soy Como Tú Crees'. Taahino's consistency in 2016 so far has actually seen them climb to 8th in the year to date rankings despite never coming higher than 14th in any one contest. No other countries set new personal bests this month, apart from of course the debuting nation Brechtoria who made it into the final on first attempt with Tigertown's 'Lonely Cities', finishing a respectable 29th. The only returning nation that wasn't banned in the last contest was Cumulonimbia, and they also made the final with Kaytranada's 'LITE SPOTS' which ended up 36th - but it turned out that they were incredibly lucky to make the final, as their semi-final points total was just 37, among the lowest scores to ever secure a qualification.

 

The wooden spoon went to Quintessa with Iceland exports Elektra's 'I Don't Do Boys' receiving 85 points to come 41st out of 41 (losing a tiebreak with Land of DW's entry 'Pyydä Multa Anteeks Kunnolla' - catchy title! - by Antti Tuisku). Persephonian News Bulletin would normally boo such a bad performance by an Icelandic artist but we're ok with this one not doing so well. We just hope our quest for an Icelandic hit in the next contest is somehow more successful :ph34r:

That's right, Persephonia are repping our new adopted home nation, Almáttugur Ísland, with some Icelandic rap (with a little bit of dancehall influence ~) for BJSC LXXXVI. Because Nordic hip-hop worked out so well for us last time.

I could have done a bit of low effort commentary but I thought it'd be better to just post the rest of it to get it out of the way. The consolation for not having any of my rambling commentary is being in my top 18. x

I am honoured to have won out against the bird hordes in your top 10 *.*

Your stanning of Apples last contest reminded me how regular it used to be last year, so it's nice to see this done now (I thought it would never happen!) :D I am of course extremely thrilled with having four of your top 10 and a further one in the top 20. So close to having the number 1 entry for three different people's 2015 EOYs with Bal & Iz :o Let's hope last contest was the start of a similar stanning for the rest of the year ;o

 

Not that massive on the number 1 unforch (not bitter I promise :kink:) but some mainly great stuff in the top 20.

Apols that my excessive Terra stanning resulted in me writing nothing about most of your entries :lol: Having half of my top 8 of the year speaks for itself though really, you were so amazingly consistent in finding all kinds of brilliance last year. 'Apples' was a nice continuation of that (think it'd be comfortably in my mid-year top 5 of 2016) even though I otherwise haven't been quite as much on the bird train this year. I gather my entries haven't impressed you near as much so far this year either, here's to a more fruitful (:magic:) second half of the year for #TerraPhonia I hope ~

 

As I'm sure I've said before 'JAY Z' would not be out of place in Kanye West's discography, there was no real contest for my #1 despite all the Terra songs! Still can't quite believe I was the only person who even gave it a medal position in its contest, at least its one big fan is a very loyal one. :lol:

Crywolf will certainly be there somewhere I'd think, that and 'Who Returned' remain my two favourite DNQs of the year so far I think! And still plenty of time for me to get behind more Quintessa entries this year (especially if you do send that second song you sent me this month ~)
